That’s sad. He should’ve had a cell phone.
I am a devout reader of the cartoon, For Better or Worse. The daughter, Elizabeth, is getting married in the present segment. Is anybody else a fan?
I love that strip. I learned a while back that the strip creator, Lynn Johnston, was friends with Charles Shulz and is friends with Bill Watterson, the Calvin and Hobbes creator. Somehow it makes sense that these folks would know each other, but it always seems odd to me when I discover that people I admire for similar things are actually friends. Did you know there is a web site where you can read the strips if you miss one? http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/
Elizabeth, One of the reasons I MUST have my morning paper is For Better Or Worse. I have followed it from the beginning. I don’t know what will happen when Lynn Johnston retires. You know, of course, that she has a debilitating muscle disease, and cannot draw for the strip on a daily basis. This is why they have been publishing some of the old strips this year; to let her rest so she can get herself through the Big Wedding.
When my sister is traveling out of the country, many times for 3 wks, I save the strips for her to catch up with on her return. For Better… is just an essential part of our lives, like the Forsythe Saga used to be…or, As Time Goes By on the BBC.
I wondered about that. I thought she must be sick, I didn’t know what exactly she was sick from. I think it would be nice to be able to buy For Better or Worse as a book, like they did with the Calvin and Hobbes strips. But it looks like she wants the strip to have an end like a very long novel. And she really was married to a dentist!
Well, Elizabeth, I’ll be lost without that strip. I have read it from the beginning and have watched those kids grow up and the parents age gracefully.
The groom saved himself from a lot of grief by not marrying her. If he really wanted her, he’d have gotten to the church on time. Too many men go through with an unwanted marriage because of guilt feelings and pressure.
I haven’t seen it in a long time, Diana. One thing that, perhaps, WoW should do is promote the fact that Season 4 of “That Girl” comes out today, considering it stars one of the leading ladies on this site, Marlo Thomas. It’s a great DVD collection of one of the best sitcoms of all time. Those ‘60’s shows are historic now, considering the many famous stars that began their careers in them, or who’ve passed away. I really enjoyed the first three seasons. http://www.shoutfactorystore.com/prod.aspx?pfid=5250143
I read, sometime ago, that “For Better or Worse” would soon stop having new strips. So sad to think of that as it is such fun to read; a realistic view of a family growing and changing. I hope the author will continue as long as possible as I know the family will continue.
Debbie,
Lynn, the creator of For Better….. has a debilitating muscular disease, and is unable to draw every day. This is why you are seeing repeats of her earlier work. I have heard or read somewhere that she is going to get the daughter, Elizabeth, married, the old Dad will die peacefully and the couple will go to retirement. But, she has made it very clear that she cannot continue indefinitely. And, when the strip shuts down, god I hope they keep repeating it, I swear it will be like loosing old friends; I’ll have to go into bereavement or something…
So–––is the guy in the car (by the way played by a wonderful actor who was in “Judging Amy) the best man or the actual “best man”? Are we to presume he got there too late so she decided to marry guy number two?
That’s true phyllis, duh, I hadn’t even thought of that, how could he NOT be the best man with her standing there at the altar with another man? She couldn’t have found one THAT quick!
I’ve watched 2 seasons episodes of the “That Girl” dvd. One thing Marlo said during the commentary was how most of the situations in the shows would never have worked today because they depended upon a lack of communication between parties and now we have cell phones. That is why this video doesn’t work. NOBODY in that age group is driving to their wedding alone and with no cell phone handy!
Actually, even though it is a VW ad, it’s a better ad for in-vehicle phone and email systems. Hmmm, maybe that is what iit is. VW advertising has never been behind the times; in fact, just the opposite. I suspect this little ad will be the first segment in a mini-series; the next one perhaps will serve to “surprise” us and get us talking about VW again—perhaps about a com system as standard. Lost cause, IMO. As far as I know, VW seems to be unable or unwilling to offer alternative fuel or hybrids to U.S. customers.
