HerTube: The Dying Swan

Uliana Lopatkina of the Mariinsky Ballet performs The Dying Swan in St. Petersburg in this breathtaking video. Click the play button and see for yourself. Thanks to Frank Peterson for recommending this video. If you’d like to recommend a video for HerTube, please send it to us by clicking here.

This next video is Anna Pavlova, for whom the ballet was created in 1905, by Mikhail Fokine, set to music by Camille Sain Saens.

Here, Pavlova dances it for the Kirov Ballet in an undated piece of film.

Which do you prefer?

Try playing them both at the same time if your computer can take it. Once you’ve synched the music it’s unbelievable….

As a non “Balletomane” I thank you, Frank, for bringing this to WOW. I can only ditto everybody’s comments. This was something I would not have sought out to see myself and feel lucky to have viewed it….even on teeny tiny her tube one can appreciate the perfection.

I have to echo everyone else’s praise for Uliana’s exquisite performance. I haven’t often seen or heard anything I would describe as “absolute perfection”: this is one such performance. Thank you Frank for suggesting that it appear here. Brava!

I liked the photoraphy of Pavlova better. It was the view you would see in the theater. The emotion was stronger too.

In Youtube 5 months ago, I responded to the Dying Swan of Nina Ananiashvili as to Anna Pavlova, “….in order to perform a dying swan, firstly need the empathy and understanding of the state of mind and feel lacking of energy to go on. I do not see this in Nina. Sorry, she is an excellent technician but not as a good actress for a swan about to DIE in five minutes!” …… ” Please compare this (Nina) with Anna Pavlova’s Dying Swan”.—-dancewu(dot)net

In my opinion, I still think Pavlova is the best ACTRESS in the Dying Swan. I have viewed most of the other versions by Galina Ulanova, Maya Pliselskaya, Natalia Makarova…. But the Queen of Ballet is the Queen of Ballet!—-dancewu(dot)net

Both are beautiful!! Because of the difference in film technology, I don’t think the two can be compared. I’m sure that Pavlova was more graceful than the old film depicted.
