I have great memories of being 18 and learning to do the twist at Daytona Beach. It was one of the most popular dances of that era, and I was very good at it.
Oh, how I wish I was still as thin!
What a fun dance that was—-and fun times too. I still remember the Stroll, Mash Potato, Limbo, the Jerk and running home from school to catch American Bandstand and later on Dark Shadows.
My mother had polio, but she taught me how to twist:
You hold a big imaginary towel behind your back and wipe the back of your rear side-side-side, meanwhile act like you’re putting out a stubborn cigarette with your extended right toe. Try it right now - it works.
All this helped me keep up with the big kids, who were always dancing in front of the big picture window so they could admire their moves in the reflection. Then they all went down to the basement to do the limbo.
Happy happy birthday, Ernest Evans! You’ve given us a bunch of good and happy memories, and nothing on this good earth can best that. Your sound your song your beat still makes me want to get up and twist @ double-time! Have a happy today and wish you many more …
When I was 12 my “boyfriend” and I would win the twist contests at our Junior High dances because he could twist all the way down to the floor and back up again. I just moved around and got to be part of the winning couple. Such fun and innocent times.
