Weight of the World: Iran, Kyrgyzstan Test Secretary Clinton

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

The world isn’t making Hillary Clinton’s life any easier.

The secretary of state held a press conference yesterday to discuss Iran, which, she says, she intends to deal with diplomatically. To a point. "President Obama has signaled his intention to support tough and direct diplomacy with Iran, but if Iran does not comply with the UNSC and the IAEA mandate, there must be consequences," Clinton said on Tuesday. And, as is their style, Iranian officials won’t be making Clinton’s job any easier — the state media reported yesterday that Iran launched its first domestically manufactured satellite into orbit, raising fresh concern that Iran’s looking to launch long-range missiles.

Besides the Middle East, Eastern Europe also has Washington worried.

Russia seems poised to expand its reach into former Soviet nations to curb the United States’ influence in the resource-rich region. Today, at a summit of the Moscow-dominated Collective Security Treaty Organization, Russia, Armenia, Belarus and four Central Asian nations — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan — agreed to set up what’s being described as a "joint rapid reaction force." The move would boost the military dimension to the alliance, which, until now, has served mostly as a forum for security consultations. The AP reports:

The move would boost the military dimension to the alliance, which until now has served mostly as a forum for security consultations. The force is expected to consist of about 10,000 men and function under a central command. The alliance now has a rapid reaction force of about 3,000, but it is not under unified command. Kremlin foreign policy adviser Sergei Prikhodko said Russian paratroopers would form the core of the force. Russia’s envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, said Wednesday that Kyrgyzstan may host some of the newly formed rapid reaction forces at the base currently leased by the U.S. military.

The ex-Soviet summit comes one day after the president of Kyrgyzstan said he was closing a key United States air base in its territory. Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said he and Washington failed to reach an agreement on what was a fair price to pay for its services, and has accepted a more promising offer from Russia. Russia has reportedly offered the country $2 billion in loans and other assistance — a move being described as a "risky political game."

Both Kyrgyzstan’s Bakiyev and Russia’s Dmitry Medvedev stressed that they would continue cooperating with Washington on Afghanistan. "No one is trying to evade responsibility," said Medvedev, who was also at yesterday’s press conference. "But the forms of cooperation are to be agreed with partners."

The U.S. military base in question, Manas Air Base, is a key supply center for U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Moscow has lately become worried that the Western conduct of the operation has only increased instability in Afghanistan. Medvedev has suggested that Russia, China and their Central Asian allies should have a stronger say in efforts to restore peace in the war-torn nation. Meanwhile, the most recent actions could be looked at as a nasty blow.

"One could not have chosen a worst moment for such move," Alexei Malashenko of Carnegies Endowment for Peace think tank said.

Secretary Clinton definitely has her hands full.

it was meant to be ‘funny’—-as an astronomer instrument maker, in my past, i know the debt we all owe to Arabics—-near all star-names come from Arabic observations—-while Western Europe lay in its ‘Dark-Age’, Mr. Kayam invented algebra, Arabs produced the 1st accurate view of the night skies—-and held the only repository of Ancient Greek logic, math, ethics, etc. my favorite ‘star-name’ remains ‘Shaula’—-the tail of Scorpio, means ‘the cat’s eyes’—-as it refers to two close stars—-quite beautiful—-time for a name change?

Hi Gully, Yes the Arabic peoples are the ones you might say that started it all, quite amazing! What is the name for say Libra? As you mentioned the tail of Scorpio. Name change, Who? :)

well, Libra was once considered the ‘pinchers’ of Scorpius—-‘Shaula’ is the Arabic term for the 2 stars at the tail of the constellation ‘Scorpio’ ‘two-stars’ inherited the Arabic term for ‘the cat’s eyes’—-i may think of no more beautiful name for a woman, than ‘Shaula’—-

Hillary is well prepared for the job! More news….here is some Change we can believe in! Obama To Sign SCHIP Wednesday Giving 4 Million More Children Health Coverage “Washington, D.C.(AHN) - President Barack Obama is scheduled to sign into law on Wednesday a bill expanding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to give health coverage to 4 million more children. The President will sign the measure at 4:30 pm ET in the East Room of the White House. He will be joined by Vice President Joe Biden, according to the White House. The Senate passed the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 last Thursday by a vote of 66-32, with nine Republicans voting in favor of the measure. The House passed its own version of the measure on Jan. 14 by a vote of 289-139. The SCHIP reauthorization bill expands coverage to 4 million more children at the cost about $33 billion over the next 4 1/2 years. The program currently covers 6.7 million children. A similar bill had been vetoed by former President George W. Bush last year.”

hi, purty lady—-you really stay on top of politics—-personally i spend most time at the sciences, as i’m convinced some underlying principle explains both human and all ‘disorder’. but you may see the problem—-how may ‘disorder’ ‘hit’ your neighbor, and miss you? well, given people being ‘disordered’, one explanation would be You should have been ‘nutz’, as some, yet your sanity is a fortunate result of ‘order-from-disorder’—-a mind-twister—-you have to ‘bend’ your thinking to grasp the concept—- kind of a ‘there-but-for-you-go-i’ deal—-and we’re all perhaps ‘wild-cards’—-may go either way. so it becomes hard to blame Alex or reward your sanity—-comes down to ‘judge not…’—-ya got lucky, he got screwed. i’m workin’ on it—-and real tired—-

Did you ever read “Future Shock”? Well, I think we are living in the age of Mass Insanity. People as a whole today, behave in ways that would have been judged insane only a few decades ago. The self absorbtion, the lack of empathy, greed, short attention spans, fear, anger.

Deb, Amen to that. The lack of empathy bothers me most followed closely by all of this anger.

well, ‘given S is the property of mass: then S=md(d)t(t)—-verbally? S (+entropy) is equal to the mass distance squared, times the time squared—-then -S=m/d(d)t(t)—-or negative entropy equals the mass over distance and time squared. S, +entropy being the tendency of systems to ‘disorder’ with time, and -S, tendency to order over time—-the key is to view S as the property of mass, not ‘G’, a never proven thing—- as S via mass would ‘disorder’ both the space/time matrix And living-systems (is there a difference from ‘warps’ space/time vs. ‘disorders’?)—-and things don’t ‘fall’, rather slide along said warpage to the higher mass. ‘G’ becomes myth. one would expect increasing disorder—-a rather crude presentation, but more than food for thought. our physics folk have neglected ‘local-circumstance’ (high-mass) in their reasoning—-sort of as making hypothesis from within a burning house, and assuming those conditions to be universal—-error of reasoning—- you may wiki ‘gravity’, go to ‘anomalies’ and perhaps see my point—-and i’m only pointing to a line of inquiry—-many unresolved issues. how complex living-systems arrive, evolve, in high-mass, etc.,etc.—-takes your minf off politics, or does it? :)
