Clinton's Diplomatic Style: Breath of Fresh Air or Lightning Rod?

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Hillary Clinton isn’t exactly one for beating around the bush.

Last week, she made headlines for speaking publicly about the successor to rogue North Korea leader Kim Jung-il. With tongues wagging, Clinton kept a level head, saying, "I think that to worry about something which is so self-evident is an impediment to clear thinking … And I don’t think it should be viewed as particularly extraordinary that someone in my position would say what’s obvious."

Well, the secretary of state displayed more of that diplomatic style throughout the rest of her Asia trip last week — including touching on topics like sanctions against the junta in Burma, and human rights, particularly those of women, in China.

"In no society are women treated equally yet," she told a group of female academics and other leaders in Beijing. "I believe strongly that if women are not full participants in society, the society does not advance the way that it could. And if women are denied their rights, it affects children, families and the entire social structure."

Speaking so openly — and so publicly — about these latter topics are typically taboo for American officials, but it may be a sign of more to come.

Per The Washington Post:

Clinton’s willingness to speak frankly — combined with an extensive effort to get beyond ministerial meetings in order to hold town hall meetings and conduct local television interviews in the countries she visits - suggests she will put a distinctive personal stamp on the Obama administration’s foreign policy. What is emerging is something less rigid, less cautious and more open.

We think Clinton is a breath of fresh air, and no time can be wasted giving offending countries a verbal pass just to avoid raising a ruckus.

Meanwhile, Clinton on Sunday asked the Chinese to continue their economic support for the United States, despite the fact that the economy there has nearly ground to a halt. "We are truly going to rise and fall together," she said, urging China — which is financing part of our $787 billion stimulus package — to continue buying U.S. Treasury bonds. "We are in the same boat and, thankfully, we are rowing in the same direction."

China’s economy has virtually ground to a stop.  How are they going to support our debt if they are in so much trouble?

I am so gratified to hear that she says what is obvious.  Things are changing rapidly, and it is time for the obvious to be spoken.  Her assessment that if women don’t have equal rights then a country will lag behind, is so true.

How ironic it is that all these years later Hillary is being praised for her Moxy” and self assertiveness. I can remember when she became first lady she was chastised in the press and forum of public opinion for being too outspoken and assertive. Not one for being content in standing by the president quietly with a painted on smile, she let it be known she had ideas she wanted to see put into fruition. Her statement about not wanting to be like Tammy Wynette and “stand by her man” or stay at home and bake cookies, caused a huge uproar at the time. Now years later we appreciate her independent spirit and see the value of having a woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. I love it! This makes me so happy.

Well, to be fair Belinda, the ‘job’ of First Lady is much different that that of Senator or Secretary of State and their are different expectations and standards. As Senator and now as Secretary of State, it is her job to be assertive and to speak out. Not necessarily so as a First Lady.

Agreed. The job of first lady is indeed different. However (and this is just my opinion) she was the first (first lady) I can recall that was assertive in voicing her opinions and then taking the steps (albeit through Bill Clinton) to see her ideas on health care and reform addressed.  She was the first to enter the White House with a clear set of agendas of what she wanted to see accomplished.

I respect her for that and because it was such a glaring difference from every other first lady, all the more apparent. It appears Michelle will follow suit in that regard because she has said she feels strongly about military family rights and benefits as well as education for the nation’s children.

ALL First Ladies have had a special project they devote their time to.   Michelle Obama is not unique in that regard and neither was Hillary Clinton.   Hillary learned early that sharing the limelight with Bill wasn’t not been well received by both parties.

My friends, both Secretary Clinton and international diplomacy are far too complex to be reduced to the dichotomy of either "breath of fresh air" or "lightning rod."

As always, the answer is in the shades of grey in between.
