You mean, the unspoken “for a black person,” Ms. Whoopi????? Oh, what a huge surprise! I’m sure you have an elegant way to diffuse your slap reflex by now, huh? I remember someone once asked Gloria Anzaldua how long her people had been in this country, and she responded, “On my father’s side, four generations, and on my mother’s, 10,000 years.” Or perhaps the other way around…. Sigh. There is hope, but it is like watching paint dry, isn’t it.
Well, I’m thinking it’s still too “boy” oriented for me — the ole male point of view I am up to here with, you know? But it’s far more interesting than most of what’s out there….. HuffinPuff is still my fave, I think. I mean, other than the London Times on line, etc. Mostly I’ve read The Financial Times for the past year….
……..and this drives you crazy because? I’m thinking of how drunk drivers are my “crazy” point….or people who hurt children and animals….being articulate is an okay thing …really. Makes it possible to have a say in things.
I’ve heard her say this before in past interviews. I believe she’s referring to, as Mugsy already mentioned above, the tendency of some people to be surprised at how “articulate” she is…for a BLACK person (because when a white person is well-spoken, it’s hardly worth mentioning). It’s sort of a backhanded compliment, if you will…
That’s how I interpreted it, anyway. I could be wrong.
I think you’re right about your interpretation of what Whoopi means, Kryssi. As a matter of fact, on my part, speaking as a Caucasian female (that’s what they make me check in those boxes) I wish I could express myself as well as Whoopi, but then, I would be Whoopi and it wouldn’t be the same.
I love you, Whoopi! I watch you every day on The View just to keep my brain straight!
Maggie
OOOOOOOOOH I’m so with you with drunk drivers and animal abuse…even still go to PROTESTS…yup and hold signs…You’re a good person…you care about people…My stepson was killed by drunk drivers…………….and animal abuse…..no tolerance for them either…puppy mills is my big thing these days!
