What drives me crazy is when I say “thank you” and the response is “no problem”. What happened to “you’re welcome”????? I can’t get my brain around “no problem” in response to “thank you” - it just doesn’t make sense to me. Am I missing something?
Yes, Snowbird, I suspect you are. Lots of our young people grew up with and went to school with native Hispanic speakers, who often say, “No hay problema,” which becomes “no problem” to the native American-speaking ear. But what they’re saying is, “prego, “it’s my pleasure,” “de nada”, “it was nothing,” or “you’re welcome.” No problem.
Sensitivity is a good trait to have. Whoopi is a great moderater. None of the compliments are meant to be condescending. “White” people come in all different shades. I think people feel intimidated by creative outspoken people of all shades. Therefore they lose their own articulate speech; We all need to get used to life as it is lived today . thank goodness for freedom. It will only take a few more years for this phase to pass. Accept a compliment as a compliment and do not try to analyse everything people say.
I think that it definitely has to be taken into context. If someone means “You are so articulate” … “for a black person!” then YEAH… ugh - comments like that just seem to make my heart hurt, because I fear it will always be this way.
But I think that some individuals might actually mean it as an honest compliment - with no negative stereotypes, strings, or other thoughts attached. If someone called ME articulate, I would be overjoyed. However, all intentions aside, if I had been told this maybe every day for the last 30 years, it might get to me as well.
But to Whoopi - what you ARE is insightful - and I love to listen to what you have to say because of that. Agree or disagree, what we all should do is respect your thoughtfulness.
I cheated! I heard that one on the View. I’m sorry to say I had to stop watching for a few weeks though due to words that make me crazy ‘family values’ as determined by the GOP. .
