As Husband Prepares for Veep Seat, Jill Biden Keeps Teaching Gig

With only weeks until her husband takes over as vice president, one would expect Jill Biden to be winding down her own life and making preparations to become a dutiful second lady. Well, she isn’t.

Rather than giving her life entirely to her new position, Mrs. Biden’s doing what few second ladies have done: She’s keeping her day job. A teacher at Delaware Technical and Community College, Jill Biden plans to stay on through the spring semester and then move to another school near Washington. One of her colleagues there, English teacher Mary Doody, passed on word, “She’ll still teach in the spring, but hopefully somewhere near Washington. And I know that she would definitely teach at a community college."

Most First Ladies have dedicated their lives to charity, but Biden, a former model who has a bachelor’s and two master’s degrees, as well as a doctorate, simply can’t fathom leaving her current gig. Yes, some DC-area schools have already offered her positions, but Biden has said she loves working with the economically disadvantaged groups that often attend community colleges. "I just love that population," said Mrs. Biden last month. "It just feels really comfortable to me. I love the women who are coming back to school and getting their degrees because they’re so focused."

Biden’s spokeswoman had little to say on the matter, only offering this: "Right now she is focused on her family, her students and planning for the exciting years to come." Biden will also reportedly continue her work with Delaware Boots on the Ground, which works with military families, as well as extend her work into breast cancer and education-centric charities.

Jill Biden is the unsung hero of the whole campaign. I have admired her for years. She is a deeply intelligent and dear woman. Thank you for writing about her.

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend, Newzie. Thanks for stopping by. I have always loved both Bidens because they are so unpretentious and real. Jill is one of those people I know I would love to sit down and have a cup of coffee with. Also, it is obvious that he adores her.

We’re in for a very unconventional, 21st century inspired four years, hopefully eight from this administration and I hope the rest of Washington follows suit. I’m excited to see how the Obamas and the Bidens work together as a TEAM for a more down to earth, realistic approach to governing this country.

I was taken by surprise by an article having something to do with the Bidens. It sounds like Jill Biden will have a lot to contribute. I would love to see her advocate for helping women, and adults in general, acquire opportunities to return to school.

I think our whole nation is going to be pleasantly surprised by both of the Bidens. They are both sincere caring people with their priorities firmly in place. Joe Biden has already done more for women than any other senator and Jill will continue to do the same. They have never sought the limelight and have always worked to make life better for others. We are fortunate in having them help lead our country!

finally the families of the people in charge in washington, dc, live out good values, as do the people in charge. i am impressed with this bunch. it is gradual, but over the next couple of decades, first and second spouses may finally get the opportunity to contribute to society without reference to their spouses. jill biden gets to be ms. citizen.

What a wonderful person to want to continue working at a community college. Many families are sending their children to a 2-year community college because they can no longer afford the cost of a 4-year college. After 2 years, the students transfer to a 4-year college and complete their education. She is truly a great Second Lady.

I wonder how she got the secret service to go along with that ? I think we are entering new territory here, an actual, working member of Pres/vice Pres family and the rules will have to be re-written. I love the stories about Obama’s negotiation with the secret Service about his Blackberry ….. welcome to the 21st century !

Maybe it’s me but I took offense at a professional educator’s job being called a “gig”. I don’t see why Dr. Jill Biden should end a professional career she obviously finds rewarding because her husband has taken a new job. If anything it’s his job that is just a four year gig. Dog Person
