I Read the News Today, Oh Boy: Airline Notice From Gypsy

Mary Wells
A couple of large airlines are sending out notices to their confirmed international passengers warning them to arrive four hours ahead of departure. All international airlines are asking for earlier arrivals than the earlier arrivals they were asking before. There are many reasons and many different problems among the airlines now.

For travelers, one common problem is cost increases — and expect more as fuel prices continue to increase. As we move into the peak travel season, we expect a lot of headaches. So be sure to check with your airline about what time you must arrive to check in! I have two friends who were refused check-in after arriving one-and-a-half hours early. "Flight is closed," they were told. When they screeched, the woman at check-in said sternly: “No airline can check in an international flight after two hours!" But four hours check-in feels like a week. When I called an airline about this I was told that if you receive a four-hour warning by mail take it seriously - it means four hours, not three and a half.

You should think twice before flying to euro countries anyway. It takes $1.58 to buy a euro today. And it takes $2.00 to buy a British pound. You can expect a cup of coffee to cost $40 in some cool cafes.

Not Buenos Aires, Argentina. The dollar is strong in Buenos Aires. You can buy everything in sight. Buenos Aires looks European. And there are a lot of great Italian restaurants there.

Last warning for the day: don’t wear or carry, in fact don’t take valuables on trips this summer. More countries than ever have warnings out of snatch gangs on the streets.

Me? I’m going to British Columbia. Canada. Gorgeous. Safe. A dollar is a dollar.

Last November we traveled on Jet Blu from the West to the East Coast. It’s a simple flight right? People do it all the time. We arrived early, as requested, and in time for our red eye. We have a four year old and wanted him to sleep during the flight. Our 8:30 flight was “delayed” until 12:30 a.m. and, needless to say, my son struggled to sleep amid the terminal sights and sounds. It was the flight from Hell as he tossed, turned, cried, and melted down. I couldn’t blame him though. He was exhausted. After not sleeping a wink to NY, our friends there told us that three other people, who arrived on seperate flights with Jet Blu, had the same “delayed” flight issue lasting 3-4 hours. All and all, our five hour flight turned into nine with a screaming child. I think Jet Blu may have somehow combined flights and called it a “delay.” No matter what the economy, a cheap ticket is not worth losing sleep over. For us, we’re not flying Jet Blu. And I like Mary’s idea of going to Buenos Aires on a dependable airline. Although, I have to say that I’m curious as to why people are required to show up four hours before the flight. What could they be doing? Flight combining?

Canada—my Europe. Each year, except for a brief hiatus, a friend and I have gone to the Windsor Arms in Toronto to celebrate our birthdays. Thanks for your tips and wisdom —mostly thank you for helping to create this FABULOUS website. I wrote an epistle this morning regarding your How to become a millionaire … if you weren’t born rich. WowoWow has become a part of my day— with gratitude-cbw

The rate for the Pound was scary. I just had a layover in Heathrow; picking up a few essentials from the convenience store and magazine shop before my flight felt like luxury shopping:)

How airline travel has devolved. Before deregulation I traveled 150,000 miles a year around the country for a Fortune 100 brokerage firm in a snap. I’d have one overhead bag, wear a simple black Saint John knit so I could change accessories and have other outfits. Could arrive 5 minutes before the flight. No fuss, no muss. Knew the configurations of all the equipment and had our corporate travel agent book exit aisle seats for plenty of leg room. Today it is a dehumanizing cattle call. The solution seems to be… go make gazillion and fly flex-time leased. A gal has to do what a gal has to do. http://www.flexjet.com/?s_ocid=pdsrch

If possible, charter! The U.S. is slipping rapidly into its entropic spiral while we are the ones fiddling. Money still reigns, but where is it! The GDP is fine? Get real, it’s all on credit cards. That is not fine. I know one institutional bonds exec. who can adivse wisely; he’s been warning about ‘now’ since Katrina was — (yes, it did happen). Can this thing be fixed?

Upandaway…as to where all the $$ is. Macro/Micro: Macro it has been swept away via phony derivatives trading (what Warren Buffett called ‘sewage’) into offshore shell back accounts. Micro: With the dollar so low against the euro…my son, a US-French citizen who lives in Europe files taxes for three countries. He had the US refund deposited directly to his US account. He said with the exchange rate and cost to wire funds it isn’t worth it to take it out. Then added, unless you want it Mom—it’s probably a couple tho. And pourquoi pas?! Seriously, I started watching derivatives in 2001…when trading levels were $9T and our GNP was $14T. They are totally unregulated made up junk that undermines markets. Now, seven years later they are at $700T when the global economy is $50T. http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/344995.aspx Most people are too busy and stressed to care..I was concerned when they trading was $9T…..what people don’t recognize is this is the BCCI scandal all over again, same players, just bigger.

I love British Columbia, but it’s not a cheap place to go with the looney overshadowing the dollar these days. The Sunshine Coast above Vancouver and the Gulf Islands are the best places to spend the summer. Have a great time Mary.

the cost of transatlantic flights should be going down thanks to the open-skies agreement (effective 30 march). capitalistic competition at its finest. london is the greatest city in the world and well worth the extra cost.

We’ve rented a boat in the France/Monaco for the last few years but very expensive this year. I know the staff are paid in $s on a lot of American owned boats in Europe - you’d think they could pass the savings on.

I guess then that it is good that my husband does not want to fly. He will go any other mode of transportation. Actually both our favorites is to get and RV or a Camper and just enjoying mother nature. Before I got sick we would go on hikes and take the children (when they were young) go to a theme park. What great vacations we had.
