My First WANTED Poster: An Update on "I Was Robbed!"

It turns out that our cat burglar made a few mistakes. First, he was seen by several people in my building: the elevator operator along with some of the construction workers. And they were able to give a police artist enough of a description for a sketch. I’m living in "CSI!" From the sketch, NYPD produced a Wanted Poster that ran in the New York Post under a headline: “60 Minutes Thief.”

It appears that he wore gloves, since the forensics team was unable to raise any fingerprints. However, he did make another mistake when he snatched a hard hat from one of the workers. He put it on to fool the elevator man, but then left it in our apartment. NYPD is now trying to recover his DNA. There’s hope he left us a souvenir, like a strand of hair.

Every day since the robbery, I remember something else he took. A digital camera, a necklace with garnets. I’ve been trying to draw a picture of the watch he took: a Bulova that CBS gave me years ago, with “60 MINUTES” on its face. I was struggling. Then yesterday I got a present in fancy silver wrapping. Inside, a new watch, the very same one, from CBS. So now the police can send the pawn shops an accurate picture.

Silver linings: I get to wear my favorite watch again, and realize that there are some companies that have a heart (some of the time!).

That watch is so cool. They ought to make them available to buy to the rest of us. If not, we’ll be forced to steal them.

Even a simple web cam can do a good job on recording a burglar, not to mention more expensive security systems. I use web cab that can detect motion. It’s amazing how burglars strike whenever they see an opportunity. Now, when the vacation time is coming I took an extra step to make my home, and not only car secure. I have purchased a CD with burglar deterrent sounds, which I play every day in my apartment when I leave it for work. And I will play it non stop when I go on vacation. The sound quality is OK, nothing spectacular, but since you are listening to it through the closed door, it works great. Web site is: www.DeterrentSounds.com. Another good site is www.audioguard.com.
