If Lily Tomlin Ruled the World

Lily Tomlin

By Presence:

1. Ellen DeGeneres, because she has been a deep, life-changing influence on millions of people — the first openly gay performer with a hugely successful talk show and, now, chosen most popular television personality over No. 2 — Oprah! How deep is the influence when so many so affectionately have accepted Ellen, first, as a human? A talented, funny, lovable one — but a human.

By Commitment:

2. Oprah and Angelina (thanks, Liz) because they’ve used their fame and money to make such a huge difference. They’ve both raised consciousness around the world. They’ve each proven by personal commitment just how much one person can make a difference.

By Fearless Determination and Belief in Self:

3. Hillary, in spite of relentless, hateful attack and ridicule, gleefully counted down again and again, Hillary rallied against all of it to inspire 18 million Americans to vote for her, to believe in her candidacy and to sustain a long-term loyalty that, one day, will likely put her in the White House as the first woman president … I say all this even though I look squint-eyed at all politicians. But some, I believe, are way better than others and how much better depends on us. Condoleezza Rice, not! I can’t go there. I don’t know how anyone in the Bush Administration can be redeemed after actively being a part of misleading our great country and running it into the ground. Speaking above of one person making a difference: It will take millions of people to undo the harm that’s been done by this one president.

Sigh. Well, great, Lily, and I would say there is a fourth. I think J.K. Rowling is the most powerful woman in the world. While everyone else is flapping their traps about education and children and how can we get through to the kids and blah blah blah endless conferences and studies and did I mention blah blah blah…. In one generation, she wrote a series of books which are read by ALL children (and a huge portion of the adults) EVERYWHERE in virtually EVERY LANGUAGE in the world, and they all LOVE her and think what she has to say is important…. Education is important. Friendship is important. Fighting evil is important. And frankly, I lay flowers at her feet. Long may she wave.

Mugsy: You did know that I substitute teach at Hogwarts? it pays to be Muggle-savvy. Happy Equinox. I shall have Tea with Miss O’Lini, savoring the memory of LaMyx while chatting with Momma Mantis on the Pepper plant. It’s a glorious day in New Mexico. Injoy

Oh, cool, Iris. Saw Shannon yesterday, speaking of magical creatures. Says hi. How do you apply at Hogwarts? I always thought it was like the MacArthur grants, i.e., it just appears. (And if you apply, they won’t give you one.)

Precisely! It does just appear. Mastering walking through walls, ala, the train station does put you on the faculty’s radar. That’s where the applying one’s self occurs. Oh goody, you and the kitty minder had a meet and greet on our beloved avenue. We’ll be in vocal contact this week.

Living or dead??? Mother Theresa for her devotion to the poor. Oprah because she uses her money for the betterment of society. And her show influences so many people. and yes Hillary who is already a major player in Congress and may well be the next Ted Kennedy. Thanks for stopping by Lily. Saw you on the Emmys. It was wonderful to see the old Laugh-In crowd. What happened in the beginning of the show? Something was not right.

THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING ELLEN. Jeez, you appear to be the ONLY one, too. I mean Oprah is one in a million, but Ellen is right up there with her like you said. She’s given/giving gay people a (for some reason rarely-seen) POSITIVE image. She’s an advocate for animal (as well as human, of course) rights. She is constructive and not judgmental. (WOW, IS ANY OF THIS SOUNDING FAMILIAR? *wink*) My own deeply homophobic grandma admitted to watching her every day. “I think she’s a good person, a lot fun to watch…I just wish she wasn’t [*me tuning out at this point*]”. I swear I don’t foresee myself ever coming out to her (I am waiting “until the grandparents are dead and buried”), but occasionally I feel Ellen’s influence potentially negating this mindset of mine…

And oh crap, damn, and hell - I didn’t even know you were going to be on the Emmys! I totally forgot to DVR it, too. So, I missed some kind of Laugh-In reunion of sorts? That just makes it thirteen times worse. Perhaps someone on YouTube will come to my rescue this week…

Serena .
Hey Kryssi, I didn’t watch the entire show, but I caught Lily performing an Ernestine skit with several Laugh-In originals. They also showed several old clips of Lily from Emmys past. And man, were the Emmys politically-charged!? I loved it!

NOOOO! It would have been nice to see those old Emmy appearances as well. And apparently another favorite of mine, Dianne Wiest, won an award. I didn’t even know she was nominated! I should probably get over my resentment of Hollywood and start WATCHING more award ceremonies. At least with DVR I have the option of skipping all of the blah blah blah…

Hah! Thanks…the “Fast Talker” is one of my favs - I don’t know how in the hell she does that. They need to release that ENTIRE series onto DVD soon because those two Best Of collections leave much to be desired. I just laughed so hard over one person’s comment under the video - “Chrissie Hynde was so young back then” - she does resemble her there, how funny!
