Introducing a New Feature: wOw Scenes!

Joni Evans

You look at it every day.

In our mothers’ time it was the vanity, the dressing table, the mirror — a private place where a woman prepared for the day or the evening.

Today it’s the desk. Yes, the desk.

It’s your workplace, your gateway to the imagination, your window on the world, the place from which you communicate with people known and unknown, your command station, and in many ways your escape.

wOw Stuff: Joni’s Desk

We thought we’d show you ours. Here’s mine (above), my favorite perch … I built it where I could place a strategic phone call and follow the sail of a lazy hawk.

Joni, from this vantage point your desk has the feel of a bird’s nest in the canopy of a forest - lucky you!

I would love to show you my neighborhood…. Lily of the Valley posted a link to her website with her neighborhood… Is there some way we could also do that? Where do you live sort of thing? The desks are fabulous!

At the moment my desk is in my living room it is nothing more that a phone/fax, some pens and paper, and a computer from 1998. Never the less I am learning that with hard with work and mentoring I too can have this view someday!

I have never been able to keep my desk neat and uncluttered for more than 10 minutes after organizing it. I guess that means that the contents are more important than how it looks. I like to think that about people, too.

Joni, if that was my desk, I’d never get anything done! My desk is in the basement. No window. That actually works for me, because I don’t get to lament the fact that I’m not outside. I work from home (a blessing), so I get to hear the hustle and bustle of the family above me too, which I like, and I have my dog at my feet all day, which I like as well.

Oh - and seeing your desks inspired me to clean mine! No more dust bunnies, and I’m all caught up on shredding the junk mail. Thanks!

I wish there was a place for me to show mine because you can’t get the full effect without seeing it. My desk is small, the same desk that I’ve had since I was a little girl, but it is currently positioned perfectly in front of my "window to the world." I live up in Washington Heights just south of the Hospital on the top floor of one of the tallest buildings around and I have a perfect view of the NYC skyline. Any night I could tell you what color the Empire State Building is and this year on 9/11 I could see those bright lights in memoriam shooting straight up from down at the Seaport from over 200 streets north of there. It is the most majestic sight and purely magical. Technically, I live in NYC and yet I can see, from my desk, what is considered the "Great Skyline."

Joni: Yes, yes, yes! I, too, have a view of trees, birds, grass, sky, and it fills me–––nature’s magnificence coming into my space and taking over, reminding me of what really matters.

That is very beautiful. My computer sits on a nice organized area between two windows. I can still hear the music or the tv which ever I wish to hear.

I envy the window view! In all my years of professional work, I have never had an office with a window. Oh well. I’m about 8-10 years from retirement, maybe there’s hope yet. I compensate with interesting artwork on the wall.

When we FINALLY finished our room upstairs (ROG) it was to be my office. Soooooooo In order to take in the view I requested windows from ceiling to floor on two sides of the room. I placed my desk in the center. Wow — it’s such a great retreat. In the early evening I see the deer at our bird feeder - their tongues raking the seeds into their mouths. I love watching the squirrels at the birdbath — especially the ones who occasionally fall into the bath while trying to sip a drink. They are so comical. I love my office — bookshelves, a comfy couch and chair and all the wonderful pictures of my family nearby. Now, if I could just lug the baby grand up the stairs — I REALLY would be in heaven.

Me? I am lucky to have a loquat tree outside my humble Hollywood window - it attracts the birds now that there is fruit on it & so I hear bird song. Let’s hear it for the ecosystem…

This new feature was full of surprises for me. As I was going through the photos, I thought there were just the three of 4, which were attractive, particularly the views…”A Desk With a View”…hmmmmm sounds vaguely familiar. Anywho, as I was making my way through the photos, suddenly up pops Ernestine, and I am overtaken with a burst of laughter that starts in the belly and shakes my whole body, something like the Hokey Pokey, I guess. The same with Liz Smith’s “command post” I studied that first photo in wonderment that this is the nerve center for all those in-depth, glamorous reports about the famous and the infamous. Then up pops the wider angle of Liz Smith’s desk, and when the tears of laughter dried, I realized this was the bond we shared. Must be something we learned at Paschal. Stacks of paper, books, telephone numbers, a little of this and a little of that….every desk I’ve ever had looked like that. Many a generous soul offered to organize the “documents,” with my always bellowing, “Don’t touch anything; you might misplace something really important.” With some twelve-year-old wondering aloud, “But how would you know?” Oh, I’d know; I’d know! Thank you for this new feature…what a pleasant tour. Peace and grace
