Israel Hits UN Building in Gaza

The situation in Gaza grows more dire as the days unfold.
The United Nations reported today that Israeli forces struck it’s compound in the contested strip. Despite UN staffer and Palestinian firefighter efforts, untold tons of food and humanitarian supplies were obliterated in the blast. Israel, which began its strike against Hamas militants 20 days ago, insists striking the building, home to the UN Works and Relief Agency, was nothing more than an unfortunate mistake. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert offered his contrition: "It is absolutely true that we were attacked from that place, but the consequences are very sad and we apologize for it. I don’t think it should have happened and I’m very sorry." Israeli army officials explained that they fired in response to rockets coming from the compound. A United Nations official described that as "nonsense."
As Israeli forces push deeper into Gaza, diplomats are gathering in Egypt to hammer out a proposed ten-day ceasefire. Those talks have stalled, however, because Hamas refuses to allow international peacekeepers into the Gaza Strip. Israel and Egypt both insist on that stipulation. Thus, the crisis continues …
