Jane Wagner on the Kindle: All New Gizmos Are Criticized

In response to: The late John Updike railed against digitization of books. Does the Kindle et al threaten the intimacy, sacredness of reading?

I have a Kindle, and I love it. It’s not the same experience as curling up with a good book by the fire, but these days most old fireplaces are not what they used to be — they’ve evolved, too — but you can still curl up in front of them and feel warm. New technological gizmos are often greeted with too much pessimism or optimism — remember when they predicted computers would help end office clutter?

I loved your post! It reminded me of my mom. Now, I love my mom and family, but they are totally suspicious of new technology. My mother refused to use a microwave until my sister, then in her 20s, moved back into the house with one. I think Mom was afraid the food would be contiminated! At any rate, she became a quick convert when she saw how fast she could make a baked potato. And now, we can’t get her to use the oven except for cookies.
