Speaking of needing a “Tomlin-Joosten” fix—did DH air last night? I caught part of the awards show that was on during DH time, then I accidentally went night-night.

Namaste! My blog is a little about all that…. I love what you are doing. My environmental chemist brother loves what you are doing. My mother would have saved them and looked at them over her morning coffee and smiled.

Oh, I agree 100% Kryssi…I have never seen anyone dive into a character the way Ms. Tomlin does, it’s simply mesmerizing. I was actually watching ‘Will and Grace’ the other night, and it was one of the episodes where she plays Margot…Too Funny. And of course ‘The Search for Signs of Intelligent life in the Universe’ has to be the greatest performance I have ever seen. Ms. Wagner, I just can’t stop talking about how incredible that piece is. It’s so advanced and strikingly real, revolutionary almost! Just that idea that everyone and everything is connected by some bond or another is mind boggling. Pure Genius. I really hope Ms. Tomlin will be performing some of it when she plays in Tampa, I’m sure she will….My Goodness, your artistic abilities seem to be bottomless….Your writing and these eye opening Care-toons are phenomenal (and very funny to say the least). Is there anything that you cant do?

I LOVE MARGO! She’s so…hilariously aloof. Tomlin has the lovable eccentric down to a tee. “The Search” is without a doubt the most life-altering piece (cliche but true) I’d ever seen. I only wish I could have seen it on the stage. Because of Lily’s total possession of those PEOPLE - I hesitate to call them characters because they are just too real - I was so deeply attached to so many of them that I immediately ordered the book in case there was extra material about them — and there is! I carry it in my purse to let others read it (a couple have even purchased their own copies), and to have in case I experience a moment of darkness and need validation (yes I sometimes have to seek affirmation from fiction, it’s sad but true…but the beauty of “The Search” is that it’s so REAL it hardly qualifies as fiction). There is even a character with my name (spelled differently, of course) who expresses thoughts I HAVE HAD, practically verbatim! I found her so tragically complex and identifiable before I even knew she had my name. She and Agnus Angst are my favorites. Agnus has that PRO-ACTIVE (versus my mere reactive) passionate outrage I’ve always envied. The whole story is genius enough as a concept, let alone all of the unforgettably profound one-liners that Jane is so brilliant at penning. Even my best friend Stephanie is always quoting Jane now - I think she shares an Aquarius mentality connection with her, LOL! And if Art is soup, then Jane + Lily = the most nutritious Soup for the Soul

I believe what Kryssi wrote about in being able to identify with “The Search” characters (who are themselves searching) is true for everyone, because Jane’s play is truly a work of art—it’s not just another play among the many typical Hollywood dramas. It inspires a human connection. To me, “The Search” is set apart as is T.S. Eliot’s, “The Cocktail Party;” Peter Shaffer’s, “Equus;” as Eugene O’Neill’s, “Long Day’s Journey into Night.” “The Search” has something significant to say to all of us as human beings, therefore, the identification anyone can have with one or more characters in the play, I believe, is intentional. The beauty of the play is that one is gently coaxed into this premeditated stroke of genius on the premise of being entertained. What one finds, however, is something much more meaningful and significant. To me, this wonderfully written and perfectly performed piece, (which won what, five or six awards, besides Lily’s Tony?) is about a circumstance we all know and recognize—the limiting paradox of the human condition that we each try, in our own unique ways, to overcome every day of our lives. But the heart of the play resides within something Lily pointed at in her WoW post on “the Tony Experience”: “I wanted and still want to show all of you what’s remarkable or funny or tender or vain or foolish or noble about all of us—and to feel that connection, that validation of how much I am like you. How much we are alike. And to capture the fragility within each of us.” This is exactly what “The Search” shows us! We are all in this proverbial boat together—no matter if we have the wealth and elegance of Kate or if we are struggling to make it day by day, as Tina and Brandy, or if we have chosen an alternate reality, as Trudy has. Many of us may have grown up as a young Agnus who sees all of life’s oppressions—like a typical Keats’ poem that shows the contrasts of the world as in “Ode to a Nightingale” … “To cease upon the midnight with no pain, … ” I know I did. But within all of this, all of our uniqueness, we are the same. We all have a common melancholy thread that runs through the heart of each and every one of us. In our struggles each day we are always trying to search out, to find, and to touch that “something.” Sometimes we can, and sometimes we experience that enlightenment for a moment, but then we fall back from it because we cannot maintain it forever.

Right on, Serena! (Or is that “write on”??? ;-P) I will never forget that quote of Lily’s. I’d never before heard an actor express a more noble, selfless interest in their career. A lot of them act because it gets them attention, or they are simply GOOD at it, or they are thirsty for the challenge of bringing fiction to life or getting inside someone else’s mind/life/experience. But I have never heard an actor state that the reason they pursue roles is to represent and connect. THAT was far-out! For the first time ever, I looked at acting as a serious art form.

Sofia, Thank you, thank you for those wonderful words! I had been suffering from a writer’s block until I started working on Wow. Generous comment like yours and others who are so quick to express their appreciation have inspired me. I owe you all so much. . People have been so supportive and I find it so motivating. Jane

Are you kidding?!? WE are the ones who owe you so much. Your talent and Ms. Lily’s have been an inspiration to us all for so long. I try never to miss Ms. Lily when she performs near me from the 1970s to present. And you, Ms. Wagner, have talent, wit, integrity, brains, the works. You both do. You are THE Dynamic Duo and the world would be a dim place without the likes of you two.

Let me second that, we owe you both so much…thanks for the laughs that keep us going. Bela is ready to Punk the Palins, she’s an expert at “treeing” all interlopers foolish enough to enter her territory!

Wow, there a tons of typo-o’s in my last post…but I guess that’s what I get for wrtiting it on my sidekick…

What? I only saw one (maybe two, but more like one and a half) real typo! You should see my posts in other threads where discussions get more heated - when I am upset, I type faster. And forget to re-read. And I therefore make tons of mistakes. And it’s so OBVIOUSLY my Karma for being such a “grammar nazi”…
