Joan Ganz Cooney: The Choice of Palin Is Simply Irresponsible Updated 8/30, 2:06 PM

Joan Ganz Cooney

Update:

Just to set the record straight, I’d like answer those who favorably compare Sarah Palin’s experience to Barack Obama’s.

First, by contrast to Ms. Palin, he, in his childhood and adolesence grew up in the most racially diverse state in the union, Hawaii, and in one of the poorest foreign countries on the planet, Indonesia, both of which experieces gave him a world view very few American children are priviledged to gain.  After graduating from Columbia, he went to Harvard Law School and was elected President of the Law Review, an honor that goes only to those at the very top. Subsenquently he moved to Chicago, one of the nation’s largest cities, as a community organizer and as a teacher of constitutional law at the University of Chicago. For years, he was exposed to the multitude of  problems faced by urban America.  After serving in the State Senate for 7 years, he was elected to the  U.S. Senate  4 year ago  where he has served on the Foreign Relations  committee.

Yes he has been running for the office of president for the past 18 months but his performance as the executive in charge of a huge, hard-fought, successful national campaign during which he beat one of the most formidable families in politics today is no small thing and speaks very well of his ability to manage large, complex national efforts.

As one blogger asked, can anyone imagine Sarah Palin at this time running a prolonged  Republican primary campaign and banishing say, the Bush family?  I have no doubt she is a competent governor of Alaska but that is simply too small a playing field to be a springboard to the vice presidency and a heartbeat away from the Oval Office.

*********

The choice of Palin is simply irresponsible. McCain has a 50 percent chance of being president and he puts a heartbeat away from the presidency a 44-year-old who has been governor of the least populated state in the union for less than two years. And that’s the extent of her experience. What on earth does she know about anything to do with governing a huge country or about foreign policy? Her debate with Biden should be very interesting.

To think, as I’m sure they do, that former Hillary supporters can be wooed to their ticket by adding a pro-life, lifetime NRA member surely ranks as one of the dumbest political moves in many years. I will be very surprised if Obama doesn’t get a significant bump in the polls just from this news.

But then when it comes to politics, nobody knows anything.

My Alias: “It’s unseemly. Especially as a political tactic. I find it abhorrent.” Of course it is, but then again…. Nothing is ever mentioned of Biden’s age which will be 66 in November. Since he will be ‘guiding’ the presidency, how come we’re not concerned about that? The arguments get tiresome. Obama got a 3 or 4 point bounce from the convention — the Dems are doing something wrong. A lot of which is portrayed here.

I agree, he’s an idiot, she has bad hair, eh is probably his girldfriend (OK, this is my sister’s, very astute), she talks with a Wisconsin accent or whatever. I wonder why women even GOT the vote. Maybe it was a bad idea.

Star: “I wonder why women even GOT the vote.” LOL. At least it’s easy to understand why it took so long.

I guess we to have accept that anyone in America can rise to the highest position in the land. In fact, isn’t it the right of all Americans to seek office, not just the inside few who have rubbed shoulders with the Kennedys. A peanut farmer was president (Carter). An actor was president for 2 terms (Reagan). A bodybuilder/action star became the Govinator of California (Schwarzenegger). A wrestler was Governor of Minnesota (Jesse Ventura). A musician was a congressman (Sonny Bono). The list goes on. So why not a female who already is a governor of a state and one who has managed an administration dedicated to reform for VP?

Indeed. Maybe we have reached enough emotional maturity in this country to nominate a black man, but not a woman. I don’t get the hate.

I do not think it is possible for McCain to be offended by comments here. First, there is no evidence that he reads comments on wowOwow, and second, he has bragged that he does not use the internet. If you are offended, that is another matter.

Alias, Every president is just one gunshot away from death every time he appears in public. Goes with the territory. They get very familiar with hearing that it can happen any moment they are in a crowd. I think you remember when it happened to Reagan and Truman? I don’t know how often you get to DC, but when I’m there, I am used to seeing sharpshooter on the roofs to protect him. If a person can’t stand to think about the possibility of what can happen, better he not run. Why do you think they have to wear flak jackets in Iraq and sometimes bullet proof vests here?? Yes, I very much want to know who will take the place of the president, especially when we already know he has had melenoma 4 times.

Hi Alias, It’s not only health issues. My governor was caught in a sex scandal and he was considered a “maverick” too. As you know, he resigned in disgrace. Not that this will happen to McCain. Edwards could have been another disaster. Unexpected things happen. You sound comfortable with Palin being ready to take over as POTUS should anything happen.

carol, your governor decided to spare the people of new york what kwame kilpatrick is putting the people of detroit and michigan through. if something happened to either mccain or obama, we would be subject to the vice president. i am secure that i would not want palin as POTUS. i already do not want bush as POTUS, even though his time, thankfully, is almost up.

Not any more. She now calls herself Too Dumb For Me and she knows she is no longer allowed to change her name according to the Terms of Agreement. And the only reason I caught it is because she posted a reply to something I wrote. I am more worried about who will win in November.

Oh, I’m sure he’s used to it by now. He’s a big boy. He can handle it.
