Joan Ganz Cooney: The Choice of Palin Is Simply Irresponsible Updated 8/30, 2:06 PM

Joan Ganz Cooney

Update:

Just to set the record straight, I’d like answer those who favorably compare Sarah Palin’s experience to Barack Obama’s.

First, by contrast to Ms. Palin, he, in his childhood and adolesence grew up in the most racially diverse state in the union, Hawaii, and in one of the poorest foreign countries on the planet, Indonesia, both of which experieces gave him a world view very few American children are priviledged to gain.  After graduating from Columbia, he went to Harvard Law School and was elected President of the Law Review, an honor that goes only to those at the very top. Subsenquently he moved to Chicago, one of the nation’s largest cities, as a community organizer and as a teacher of constitutional law at the University of Chicago. For years, he was exposed to the multitude of  problems faced by urban America.  After serving in the State Senate for 7 years, he was elected to the  U.S. Senate  4 year ago  where he has served on the Foreign Relations  committee.

Yes he has been running for the office of president for the past 18 months but his performance as the executive in charge of a huge, hard-fought, successful national campaign during which he beat one of the most formidable families in politics today is no small thing and speaks very well of his ability to manage large, complex national efforts.

As one blogger asked, can anyone imagine Sarah Palin at this time running a prolonged  Republican primary campaign and banishing say, the Bush family?  I have no doubt she is a competent governor of Alaska but that is simply too small a playing field to be a springboard to the vice presidency and a heartbeat away from the Oval Office.

*********

The choice of Palin is simply irresponsible. McCain has a 50 percent chance of being president and he puts a heartbeat away from the presidency a 44-year-old who has been governor of the least populated state in the union for less than two years. And that’s the extent of her experience. What on earth does she know about anything to do with governing a huge country or about foreign policy? Her debate with Biden should be very interesting.

To think, as I’m sure they do, that former Hillary supporters can be wooed to their ticket by adding a pro-life, lifetime NRA member surely ranks as one of the dumbest political moves in many years. I will be very surprised if Obama doesn’t get a significant bump in the polls just from this news.

But then when it comes to politics, nobody knows anything.

Marjorie: I agree but then the cable commentators and I think CNN went live with the Dail y Kos blog on the special needs child not being born to Gov. Palin but her daughter and there ya go…that story went viral and now who in their right or left mind will ever believe Daily Kos again. Not me. Obama has lost his passion and McC looks like he just mainlined Viagra. Sorry this is so late a response..th ealert was in my junk file.

The source is not the blogs. McCain has been describing Palin as his soulmate.

this is the reaction to Palin from friends in Germany: Here everyone also is wondering why unexperienced Palin??? May be just because of that!!! She is no competitor to him. You have to look very long to find someone equally stupid and unable to talk and remember facts. It can only be an a) very much younger woman from a b) very remote area with c) no political knowledge at all. He does not think of the fact that she might have to replace him after assassination (see Johnson!). People like him (Peter Pan dreamers) are not getting killed… But the democrats can light a candle in church now, the job is done, I suppose. The choice of Mr. Biden, that gentleman, was brilliant. Hillary did not want to be No 2 (as former president’s wife), that’s ok. Now there are two of the same aura, not representing the rifle liga

Thank you, Joan, for your comment. I’m still in shock on hearing Mc Cain’s decision. What was he thinking?

According to the Anchorage Daily News, many Alaskans, including Republicans, who love her as governor are questioning her experience to be VP: Few wanted to talk about anything else on talk radio Friday. Conservative host Rick Rydell said there are some benefits to the state, but it’s a gamble for McCain to pick an unknown with what he considered “questionable vetting.”” “It seems almost like a Hail Mary pass at the end of a football game,” Rydell said in an interview after his show Friday. There were other articles about her not supporting environmental measures as well as firing the head of the state troopers for what he feels is due to his refusal to fire her ex-brother in law. The person she replaced him with was also fired because, it turns out, was involved in a sex scandal. Alaskans who supported Hillary said they would not support Palin just because she is female. (no surprise there)

Perhaps what is most glaring about Sarah Palin’s resume is that there’s no position papers. No examples of great thought on the issues of the day. No unique views or insights or approaches that would give this voter confidence that she is an individual of thoughtful and educated views. In addition, Palin has not shown herself to be a political leader. She has not stepped-up to address the foremost issues of the day or made a tough stand on a national political issue or even shown an interest in standing up for the little guy or gal. Throughout this election we have been hearing how the economy is the number one issue of this election. And it was noted that McCain would need to select a running mate that has a firm grasp of the economic issues. Is Palin the economic answer? Palin holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Idaho.

The republican voters who will still vote for this ticket are all the proof that’s needed that they are voting for their party rather than their country. Neither McCain, nor his advisers, not this absurd choice of a VP running mate have anything to offer this country that will correct the errors of the last 8 years. But then, these people don’t even realize there have been such huge errors. They only care about their religion and their guns. Well, except for the small percent who are wealthy and only care about increasing their own personal wealth regardless of the expense to the majority of the country.

In response to Joan Ganz Cooney’s update of 8/30/08, 2:06pm Right on, Joan. You are right about the vast contrast between Sen. Obama’s and Gov. Palin’s experience. He far outweighs her in content.

Kudos to you Joan, I could not have expressed it any better.

I agree with the first comment about her experience in large urban areas. How is she going to get tha black man to to stop sleeping around abandoning his children and creating in its wake a crisis in society. Our neighborhod has been robbed five times each of them by young black abandoned men with no direction or purpose and probably no father. America is waiting for Barack to step up and take on the problems of the black community head on. Go BO America really needs you

I can’t say I’m a fan of his, but on this, Rev. Jessie Jackson got it right when he said, “Senator Obama ain’t run nothin’ but his mouth.” What’s that old saying? “He who laughs last, laughs best.”

:-) It almost sounds like these Obama supporters are worried about something, doesn’t it?

Lynn: “Senator Obama ain’t run nothin’ but his mouth.” Not a popular thing to say on this site. It is an opinion, however.
