Joan Ganz Cooney on the Real Reason Obama Didn't Choose Hillary

Joan Ganz Cooney

I’ve been reading a lot of complaints that Obama did not choose Hillary as his vice president. And I have been moaning about it for days. I spoke yesterday with someone who knows a lot about it all who told me that Hillary was high on the list but the vettters couldn’t get past Bill’s very complicated philanthropy and business life because the two were so closely tied together. It was almost impossible to know where business stopped and philanthropy began. And of course a lot of foreign governments had donated to his library and other entities with which he was involved which would have become another story.

What they faced when considering her was that the press (it was rumored and was probably so that the Times had five reporters ready to go) would have a field day investigating Bill’s very complicated financial history. And what they became certain of was that Bill would become the story day after day and week after week and that they would never be able to get back on message. This all rings true, so I think those of us who support Obama should try to be happy with Joe Biden.

I completely agree with you. Hillary would have been a distraction and a liability. Time to move forward.

Are you kidding! She’s going against BHO 2012, I don’t even think she will vote for him. She not done!. The Clinton’s are done with him, and the 23 million dollars he sugguested he would help her to collect the monies,If she put in for her helping him out.

Amy, I didn’t take from Joan that Hillary is done, I supported hillary but now Obama, by no stretch of the imagination is she done plzzzzz, far from it, even though they ran against each other when u go back and look@ the debates they stood for the same things, they just delivered it differently, unlike McCain, one would think that he’s a Democrat the way he’s trying to appeal to women now and hillary supproters, but I would tell him WE ARE TOO SMART FOR THAT AND WE SEE THROUGH IT ALL EVEN WITH PALIN, WHAT PALIN STANDS FOR AND HER BELEIFS ARENOT MINEAND MANY LIKE ME, SORRY THE DECENT SMILE, CUTE GLASSES, HOCKEY MOM, KIDS, WHEN IT’S A SAID AND DONE McCAIN/PALIN AREN’T FOR REAL CHANGE…… “SUPERFICIAL CHANGE YES”. PEACE:)

I am so glad to hear someone finally say that Hillary supporters are too smart to think that by mccain choosing a woman running mate, that would woo votes to his side. While I may not have been a Hillary supporter, Palin is not smart enough to even be in the same room as Hillary. I want to believe that when the dust settles the Hillary supporters who are disappointed that she was not chosen as Obama’s running mate will see pass the glitter of Palin and go with the substance of the Obama/Biden ticket.

I was glad to see this commentary by Sen. Hillary Clinton and Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood in the NYTimes today. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/19/opinion/19clinton.html?th&emc=th

I concur, Amy…Hillary’s getting ready for 2012. As for Joan’s analysis: whether Hillary was at the top or bottom of the ticket, Bill’s finances would be scrutinized. Obama did not choose Hillary as his VP because they just don’t get along and his pride got in the way. And if he had chosen her (and IF she had accepted?) we all can concur that the election would be a runaway for Obama. And what does that say about his character and judgement? Thank you, but no thank you….I’ll wait for the experienced, vetted, NOT “present voting”, BIPARTISAN Hillary Clinton!

A N Kennedy and Johnson hated each other. Even Washington and Adams didn’t like each other………. That’s just nonsense to make that statment about Obama’s Pride.

And isn’t it nonsense to think that Obama didn’t choose Hillary because of Bill’s financials?

With Hillary as VP it would just like Kennedys and their buddies undermining LBJ 24/7.

undermine LBJ????—-Kennedy was shot dead, weeks after being foolish enough to say ‘The Nam’ was Their problem, and he would be withdrawing from same—-‘beware the military-industrial complex’ Ike said, upon leaving—-i don’t know if you’re an M.D, Phd—-don’t care ‘credentials have nothing to do w/intelligence’—-in any case, when you make such statements—-i wish to see your ‘backup.’

Gulliver—I recall the Kennedy folks did everything they could to undermine LBJ particularly over the Viet Nam. Sad really because JFK and his crew started the war. In the army at the time recall JFK was trying out a new doctrine to win counter-insurgency wars with Viet Nam as his laboratory. Had LBJ cleared the Kennedy folks out of the administration we might have won the war and LBJ today would be remembered as a great president.

you err on history,sir—-as the absurd ‘bay-of-pigs’ mess, The Nam was started in advance of his election—-LBJ made the mess. as the ‘bay-of-pigs’ disaster—-kennedy simply inherited both—-and rolled along—-he remains cursed by miami former batistans—-but they were only a front for ‘The Mob’—-5% got rich, via crime, 95% starved—-Fidel’s backbone—-now? al least The Mob is not Cuba’s owner—-Cuba now has the highest literacy rate in the entire Western Hemisphere—-and the lowest infant mortality rate—-kennedy’s gut told him, ‘forget the Cuban people rising against their apparent, and in act, savior’—-so he withheld some air support—-even now, best open trade, as in war they will Crush you—-easily—-again and again—-now we do biz with Vietnam—-so must it be with Cuba—-trade, not war—-

Gulliver, I’m pretty sure it was LBJ that inherited JFKs stuff. In fact, I’d bet on it. JFK was murdered in 1963 and LBJ pulled out of the presidential race as the incumbent in 1968. Probably just got it backwards. I do agree with you on the trade issue after conflict. I mean, it was the American Marshall Plan that helped Western Europe recover from the devastating world wars. And now look at the EU! They and China are about to gobble us all up! And look what we did to get Japan back on track. Now we can’t even produce our own energy. How the heck did we get here?

how did we get here? i feel by ‘delegation’ of our fates to politics—-‘my country, right or wrong’—-‘our Leader, right or wrong’, (prez, fuher, king, ‘race’, etc.), and ‘the love of $$$ over living things’. i advise reading that post responding to ‘dr. K—-an excellent treatment. then there’s the old truism—‘power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely’—-seems our system of ‘checks & balances’ has become myth. we seem as a ‘co-dependent’ couple w/our guv—-not taking ‘responsibility-for-action’, passing it to another. bad in marriage or politics. as for China, the EU gobbling us up? well, after WWII we had the last surviving intact economy—-our nation was not in ruins, so for many years the globe was ours. to expect that situation as ‘immortal’? perhaps naive. even given the Chinese disasters from Mao (millions died from his ‘absolute power’, as Russians under Stalin’s paranoia), or a Europe blasted flat by war—-their recovery was only a matter of time—-and we continued to feel our ‘Ozzie & Harriet’ status would continue? unlikely. ‘how did we get in this mess?’—-it’s no easy thing to ‘watch what they do, not what they say’—-and think for ourselves. far easier to opt for our ‘co-dependent’ spouse or guv’s choice—-JFK tried killing Castro so many times—-and that is a felony—-by USA law—-and The Geneva Convention—-nice guy? like the Cuban Missile Crisis? 1st, Castro told the Soviets he wanted no part in Nukes in Cuba, 2nd, we had the Soviets surrounded by Nuke sites, 3rd, what of the Soviet ‘nuke-carrying’ subs, as ours? easily ‘parked’ in Cuban waters? as deadly as ‘land-based’ sites—-what a bunch of politico-crap—-and you wonder how we got here? same-‘ol, same ol”. JFK, as most presidents, while far from a God, as most yet feel—-his sex-romps made Clinton seem a piker, had decided to ‘get-out’ the Viet mess that Ike started —-but hard to docu LBJ as inheriting his problems—-LBJ sent 500,000 troops vs. the Viets, Not JFK.
