Joan Ganz Cooney on the Real Reason Obama Didn't Choose Hillary

Joan Ganz Cooney

I’ve been reading a lot of complaints that Obama did not choose Hillary as his vice president. And I have been moaning about it for days. I spoke yesterday with someone who knows a lot about it all who told me that Hillary was high on the list but the vettters couldn’t get past Bill’s very complicated philanthropy and business life because the two were so closely tied together. It was almost impossible to know where business stopped and philanthropy began. And of course a lot of foreign governments had donated to his library and other entities with which he was involved which would have become another story.

What they faced when considering her was that the press (it was rumored and was probably so that the Times had five reporters ready to go) would have a field day investigating Bill’s very complicated financial history. And what they became certain of was that Bill would become the story day after day and week after week and that they would never be able to get back on message. This all rings true, so I think those of us who support Obama should try to be happy with Joe Biden.

Two items in a lead story about Palin in Sunday’s THE WASHINGTON POST struck me rather forcibly: After Palin was first elected mayor of Wasilla, Alaska the local radio station referred to her as that town’s “first Christian mayor.” Every single mayor ever elected before her was a professed Christian! The other was about the police chief she fired. Seems he wanted to get the town to make the local bars close at two o’clock in the morning instead of at five o’clock in the morning. Palin wanted the five o’clock! And he was all for an Alaskan state law barring people from carrying GUNS into banks and/or bars. Sarah Palin was and is IN FAVOR of anyone who owns a gun being able to take it into banks or bars. Somehow, Sarah’s beliefs, both religious and regulatory, make me feel LESS safe, not more. Let it go. Who really cares anymore? The discussion is so over. Hillary has moved on. We all respect her; we’ve all moved on. What is important is that we get rid of the Bush-Cheney mafia.

You are right. We need to focus on what the robber barons (including Wall Street, our president and the congress) are doing this weekend. They are trying to run away with $180 Billion of OUR TAX MONEY before Obama is elected. Remember the Boston Tea Party?? “No taxation without representation!” This weekend, 9/20-9/21, we need to start a HUGE internet protest against the bail out so that fter the election we can have a CHANCE to spend OUR TAX MONEY on a green revolution - which is what our country REALLY NEEDS in order to survive! Think about it - Do you really believe banks if we don’t bail them out will fail in a few days?????? THINK!!!

On the issue of Senator Biden as VP: Joe Biden is a workhorse. He’s got the experience required to help guide the ship of state. A ship’s captain is only as good as his navigator and his first mate. If we strip all of this junk down to its most basic form, it’s clear to see. Another thought: the McCain/Palin camp doesn’t even have the decency to utter Senators Obama or Biden’s names but refers to them as “my opponent/the opponent/our opponent”. I find that very rude and very unappealing. It also perpetuates this trend of “right and left, black and white, red and blue, liberal and conservative”. Are we that dumb? Don’t allow these divisive portrayals to invade your thinking. God help us I pray that every clear-thinking American sees through this Republican BS and casts their vote for a New Day, new leadership, and people who will actually work in our best interests. The Republicans have proved they are not in it for that. All these financial bailouts, the shift from Iraq to Afghanistan (does anyone really believe that Iraq is “stable”?) is just to dump the responsibility on the next President and it looks to me that that says a lot. They are worried so to get the last slap in on the face of all Americans, this mad dash to suddenly talk about deregulation/regulation, etc. I heard Governor Palin make some broad remark about ethics. Laughable. I wouldn’t waste my precious vote on that lot and am working hard to be sure that every, single young person I know is registered and ready to vote. They are the ones that will inherit the mess we “grown ups” have made and allowed to be made.

To All of You on this thread…and since there is not one, single place to talk about the presidential candidate…read this stomach-churning and sad information about Candidate McCain. http://www.truthout.org/article/mccain-and-pow-cover-up

I’m up to here with “Hillary would have been a better pick.” Everything Joan said is true. Palin will get McCaim some votes, she’ll lose him more. Not all women are dumb as dirt which is what McCain thinks. I also don’t think Hillary is not doing nearly enough to promote Obama. The financial mess makes it clear enough that the Republican party has run it’s course and it’s certainly time for a major change.

Believe it! And just imagine the end-of-convention tableaux of the candidates and their spouses. Barack and Michelle/Hillary and Bill…arms intertwined in victory salutes as the balloons drop…unavoidable and the inevitable centerpiece of every negative ad from the Republicans. The last thing Obama needed was another reminder of his relative lack of experience.

I’ve decided I just can’t vote for Obama. I can stand on my head for fours years, for God’s sake! I’m not giving up on Hillary. If Obama wins this election, he’ll be the Democratic presidential candidate in 2012. Hillary will then be permanently out of Presidential politics. 2016 is too late for her to make another bid. She’ll be too old. That’s why I’ve decided to vote for McCain/Palin. If McCain/Palin win, it opens the 2012 presidential race for Hillary. She won’t underestimate Obama again. She can beat either McCain or Palin in 2012. Besides, people will get used to seeing a woman in the White House, which will be good for Hillary’s 2012 bid.

Jacki, The “perfect storm” of a president with this low an approval rate and an economic crisis did the trick. In 2012, she’ll be going after an incumbent which is very difficult unless they really screw up in the first four years. The Republicans are aware of that and will hold off most of their major cuts for the wealthy until year five. They will also be smarter about campaigns and the Republicans always go for the money… Obama just got a little smarter this year knowing what he was going to face with the 527 ads. Go for the candidate that is closest to your beliefs… if Hillary was your choice… McCain really isn’t the answer. Please reconsider.

It would be the sound strategy. You never want the “lightning” at the bottom of the ticket. If you can believe it.. McCain only had a minimal problem with it.
