Joan Juliet Buck on Media, Entertainment Surviving the Internet
In response to: Should NYTimes.com change their model and charge for their online content? Tell us why
This question is central to the survival of all media and all entertainment, not just newspapers: TV, Music, Movies, Books. Of course they should charge, and of course I don’t want to pay, and of course we all should pay.

I agree with you on all fronts for the most part (they should charge, I don’t want to pay, but we should pay)
However, where the music / film / book industries have still managed to thrive on the internet, aside from ad revenue, Newspapers will probably have to find a different way to compete. With film / songs / etc, many of these have repeatable value (how many times have you seen your fav movie / heard your fav song?)
But when’s the last time you remember re-reading your fav news article? In the rush-hustle society we live in, we want our news, we want it clear, and we want it now. Afterwards, it’s absorbed (for the most part) and discarded. If you start charging in certain avenues for content, your rivals will probably come up with a new business model negating content charge, gaining more readership.
So I’m gonna stick with the opinion that a new business model will be needed for newspapers to stay competitive and available if additional revenue outside of Ad-generated is needed.
