Joan Juliet Buck: Old News, New Idiot

Joan Juliet Buck
It’s my experience that whenever anything really disastrous happens as the result of heedless behavior, some idiot tells you it’s a blessing in disguise. Al Gore said we have ten years to find alternative energy sources. What about the last ten years? What about the 35 years since 1973, when OPEC first put the screws on the West with the oil crisis? Sheikh Yamani, anyone? In the 1970s it was known that natural resources were diminishing — oil first among them. What happened in the 1980s and 1990s and the last eight years to make everyone forget that the wells will soon run dry? Why has nothing been done to truly explore the other possibilities? And, please, not ethanol, which drives up the price of food.

JJB: You’re right that the energy crisis of the early ‘70’s should’ve been the wake-up call. But, supply-and-demand & greed…these are the things that seem to motivate “responsible” action by industry and government, not common sense or what’s good for the environment/economy.

Why, you ask, has nothing been done? Deep Throat is a brother to The Shadow: The latter said, “Evil, lurks in the hearts of men;” the former said, “Follow the Money.” That band of brothers , I think, say it all.

Thank you for pointing the oil shortage mess out! I waited and waited and waited, in the 70’s for the marvelous advancements we were going to make for the future of our country! I was still young and foolish, and didn’t have the kind of awareness, I do today. Now, I don’t wait - I have been writing, calling, my congress members, people on the internet, and anyone whom I believe may be able to actually make a difference. I was one of the people who suggested all the alternative sources which are available - including ‘lightning’ - no one seems impressed with that concept. I just know there is a huge energy source there, and somehow it can be ‘captured’ much like nuclear power. I don’t have the money to do anything about it, I only have a desire to make a difference in MY country and the world. I still Want My Country Back! I’ve been saying this since 2003!! and on and on and on…
