Joan Juliet Buck: Why the Kindle Can't Replace Books

Joan Juliet Buck
You can make a book your own. A Kindle looks like something you find in an I.C.U. You can’t spill coffee on it, scribble on it or stick colored flags on the bits you like. And — if you only need one, how in hell do you furnish a room?

Joan Juliet Beck, you said it all. If not for books, I’d have no furnishings at all or at the least, they would be very dull.

I am with you all the way. I lie flat to read, and it would help there, and on a trip it would be very useful. So might try one sometime, but then there is that fee, and for occasional use, I don’t know. Maybe it’s like pay-per-view, which I don’t have either.

I agree it would be great for travel, the first bag packed is the number of books going with me and there’s never enough room. I also have books in every room, so the Kindle would have to be permanently attached somehow. Nothing replaces the feel of a book in your hands and to tab it with reference points!

Also, what about the thrill of having the author sign your copy of the book, or writing an inscription in a book you give as a gift?

Another advantage to books—don’t need electricity to operate them. We take it for granted, but not everywhere and every time will electricity be available. What about a camping trip, a power outage? Times when you need books most they may be least available if they all go digital. I can see getting to a crucial point in the story, and blip, the battery goes dead or another glitch makes the screen go blank. No thanks.

I don’t know what a “Kindle” is….but I bet it doesn’t smell of ink! What of the musty smell of an old book? What do old electronic devices smell of? Plastic, wires, and battery chemicals? No thanks.

You can also read a book in the tub, drop it, use it to prop up your wobbly desk, even run over it and it’ll still work.  And no need for batteries.

That said… I’ve been reading books in bed  using my iPhone: no need for a reading light to disturb the hubby!
