John McCain Suspends Campaign, Asks to Postpone Friday Presidential Debate UPDATE

Breaking: In a move sure to rock an already dramatic week in a campaign season fraught with surprises, and amid a national emergency in the country’s financial markets, Republican presidential candidate John McCain has suspended his campaign today in order to return to Washington to work with his Senate colleagues on the Wall Street bailout package.

He has also contacted the Obama campaign, asking to postpone this Friday night’s debate in order to work on the financial crisis.

In a brand-new Washington Post-ABC News Poll, McCain has lost significant ground since the financial crisis became topic A among mainstream Americans, trailing at 43% versus Obama at 52%.

Update:  one question circulating…what does this extraordinary move say to the average American?  Will it be a source of encouragement…or will they think the sky is falling economically…?

Update:  another thread circulating…wouldn’t this Friday night be the perfect time for a debate…with all of American engaged and watching?  Just changing the topic from foreign affairs to the economy…

President Bush addresses the nation on the economic crisis at 9 PM EST

DeB Thanks for the heads up. It was the best show ever! Dave was classic. Right after I read this post I was watching Keith Oberman’s show and he had eluded to Letterman as well. Oh my goodness, That was so good. I don’t think you want to cross with David Letterman and then ditching him and giving him a lame excuse and then showing up at the same taping slot on CBS Evening News. I wonder what Katie was thinking as she found out what McShame had done. Oh and that interview with Palin was just as awesome to watch as well. I was telling my husband that this entire process of watching the GOP squirm is better than any of my favorite show’s premier or season ending cliff hangers. I’m hooked to almost all the cable talk shows, well that is except for the FOX network. But I have to admit that I do like to switch over there to get an idea as to how they are spinning the whole thing, which by the way is another hilarious rivithing drama. The likes of Hannity, Greta, and Limbau squirming and spouting senseless rhethoric to their faithfull followers. And now the real truth to the matter comes out: They really just wanted a way to cancel or delay the VP debate. Are they out of their minds with this tactic? Can’t the American public see right through this? Palin’s 2 interviews (we can’t really count the one with Hannity), was a complete flob if there ever was one and now the writing is on the wall, they need more time. But I don’t know that there’s enough time in the next 40 days to cram info into her pretty head, is there?

De and Ann Kann, De, no I didn’t see the other program…………..I’ll see if it’s on my TEVO. Ann, your question: Can’t the American public see right through this? Evidently not……these are the same Americans who voted our present President into office. Even after 8 years of his destruction to our Country these same people still believe their Party is the Party for the People…………how deluded can they get. If they would pull their heads out of the sand for a few minutes they would realize how wrong McCain and the Republican party is right now for our Country.

Yes that’s why it is both scary and comical to listen to the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh and how they craftily spin all issues, topics, facts, and inuendos thier way. I have to hand it to them that they are quite skilled and thier followers/listeners faithfully follow like lambs to the slaugther. They call raving of how much they love these guys and that we have got it all wrong. I too have been screaming for the last 4 years now. How in the world did the American people allow another 4 years of W to go on? Folks in rural America, my inlaws for sure, will always vote Republican and now with a black man on the Dem ticket, there’s no way they can vote for him. Regardless of the fact that rural America benefits the most from a Dem government. They complain that their factories have been shut down, well who gave the tax cuts to businesses to go overseas. Farm subsidies are being taken away, yet the black man is the bad man, can’t be trusted. It truely drives me insane the blantant disregard for what’s right and what’s wrong.

Let McCAin send Sarah to fill in for him. He (allegedly) selected her as his VP candidate to fill in for him in case as President, so she should be able to fill in for him at the debates! Of course, McCain’s people will never allow it, but the commotion it would cause if it were suggested! Go Cubs!

And, he admitted yesterday he “hadn’t had a chance to read the proposal” Shocking! I think the old boy is falling apart.

Do you suppose McCain is making his falling apart so blatant in order to throw the contest? He seems to have realized that he’s not going to be able to handle the Presidency, since he can’t handle doing his jobs during the day and doing a debate in the evening. He can’t very well say *that*, though. I can’t fault him for not being able to do everything he has to do. I do fault him for knowing he can’t, and persisting.

How long does it take a person to read 3 pages? Perhaps if he wasn’t following Palin around making sure she doesn’t say anything to anyone he could focus on other things!

Hi Rita! Maybe he should have asked Tonya Harding Palin to have briefed him on the proposal! Go Cubs!

De Burca, I agree…………… I think this just shows his incompetence. His judgement about a lot of things has been poor. I thought his choice of VP was as bad as it got…………..but he just upped the scale. It’s almost sad to see a man who at one time in his life was very capable……………NO MORE

Dona, Yes, it is sad. And I think it’s going to get worse, to the point where it’s embarrassing to watch.

This is SO embarrassing I can’t believe people are still supporting him (McCain)
