As John Travolta and Kelly Preston grieve over their son’s tragic death, our hearts go out to them — and any parent who has endured the fate of outliving one’s own child.

Travolta wrote a somber message to his fans on Sunday, which read that the family is "heartbroken" over the death of their 16-year-old son Jett. Travolta writes on Travolta.com:

We would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt thanks to everyone who has sent their love and condolences. Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for and lit up the lives of everyone he encountered. We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief. We will cherish the time we had with him for the rest of our lives.

In a tribute to their son, the Travoltas published family photographs on their website.

What started out as a family vacation ended in unbelievable loss when, on Friday morning, Jett was found unconscious and bleeding in the bathroom of his family’s vacation home in the Grand Bahamas. Jett was diagnosed at the age of two with Kawasaki syndrome, which leads to inflamed blood vessels in young children. It was said in a statement that he had a history of seizures and was last seen entering the bathroom Thursday.

An EMT on the scene recalled Travolta begging for his son’s life as he held the 16-year-old’s limp hand en route to the hospital.

"Jett, come on, Jett, come on, come around!" Travolta said, recalled Marcus Garvey to Radaronline.com.

An autopsy is scheduled for today and funeral plans are under way. It is being reported that Jett’s body will be flown to Ocala, FL, which is where the famous couple raised their two children. They also have a younger daughter Ella.

My heart brakes for the Travolta family. I lost my nephew when he was 6. His mom killed him drinking and driving. He would have been 21 last August. I miss him to this day. I am sorry for all your losses for those who posted them. There is a wonderful book out that I want to share with all of you. It was written by a lady named Norma Garza. The name of the book is called A Christmas Miracle. It helps people to understand and cope with grief. I highly recommend this book for anyone. I have read the book and not just saying it is a good book because I personally know the them. I was around 12 years old when this accident happened. I will never forget how it felt walking in to the funeral home and seeing someone 2 years older than me lying in a casket. My mom used to babysit her son when he was little. They were also family friends. That is who the story is about.
