Joni Evans's Must-See Movie for Thanksgiving Night (Video)

Joni Evans

So if you hate the boredom that comes AFTER the turkey, and have had just about all you need of  that sister-in-law, the hostess, here’s what to do: Go see "Slumdog Millionaire."

Even the title evokes the movie … all juxtaposition … impoverished glitz … a film that takes place in Mumbai, India (and, not unlike what "Lost in Translation" did for Tokyo, you never have to go there once you’ve experienced this movie), with unknown stars and screenwriters and based on a never-heard-of-it book that galvanizes. The plot: An impoverished teenager wins the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" How did he do it? This movie is dazzling, terrifying, jazzy, funny, exciting, authentic, bold, uplifting, depressing, romantic and dizzying. And it’s all cut and diced into bite-sized sections set against dynamic music that keeps you squirming, salivating, screaming and laughing. Danny Boyle, the guru British director here, has created a miracle.

I think I lost five pounds watching this movie … such was the tension and thrill. It’s perfect after that predictable pumpkin pie.

Coincidence — exactly what I was going to do! But at home. Thankfully I got a screener of Slumdog, so won’t have to pile into the car wearing loose pants from the bulging belly and sit in a steamy theater full of groaning post-turkey gluttons like myself. — Gee I hope the bird thaws.

Ditto! while I don’t have a screener that’s exactly the movie my hubby and I are going to see tomorrow, and since we’re having a solo holiday I’m not going to have to worry about being an overstuffed turkey myself :)

The movie sounds great, but, I am opting for Moonstruck and Love Actually. Both great and since I have not had relatives, only friends this year, it will fill my need for those crazy moments in life and TONS of laughs. The laughter is something we all might need! Happy Turkey and I hope someone else does all your dishes! Beth

OK, so I can now report that this movie is indeed great! I enjoyed the hell out of it from the very first second, a very good script very well directed. Good call, Joni Evans :)

Dora I could barely see those faint embedded subtitles on the small screen. Were they visible on the larger screen at a theater? I have to admit… my favorite part was the dance at the end during the credit roll. :) It was intense! Great film though. Oscar contender for sure.

Oh, yeah, no kidding, the subtitles must have been hard to make out on a TV screen, let’s hope they re-do them when the movie is issued on DVD, they were perfectly legible on the big screen and I liked the way they were done. The movie was quite stylized I thought, the framing and compositions were great, Danny Boyle did a great job and I do hope it’s remembered at Oscar time. And you are so right! the credit roll sequence was the best! I was actually going to go to iTunes to see if the soundtrack was available because I keep humming the last tune. It’s one of those movies I’m going to recommend to everyone I know, I tend to be really picky with movies but this one had all the elements.
