Comment Watch, 'Change the World' Growth and wOw on Charlie Rose

Joni Evans

Dear Friends of wOw:

This week promises many new features. Your comments and posts have been so amazing and smart. We are going to feature the best of them on Fridays, as we introduce the wOw Comment of the Week.

CHANGE THE WORLD: We have been listening to your needs — big and small, collecting your suggestions and recommendations, and now want to take the next step in defining what CHANGE THE WORLD is (title of section still to be discovered — all suggestions are welcome). The key to its effectiveness is your continued exchange of experiences and anecdotes. We will be asking you to help us review and prioritize a new architecture later this week.

Some wOw women were on the Charlie Rose show last week and we thought you might enjoy seeing the clip. Click here to watch!

XOXOX,
Joni

I was so impressed with you all on Charlie Rose that I had to come and look and participate. I’ve told my friends to come too and they are as impressed as I. It’s wonderful to be able to discuss things intelligently (and most of the time without being nasty or mean) issues of the day or just fun things and get such a wide cross section of women and men’s points of view. We are more the same than we are different, but viva our differences and our connectedness!

Oh and I’m neither rich or from NYC or the west coast. On the economic scale I’m below the poverty line . Am on the Canadian Lake Erie side of the world. GM, Ford and the auto parts industry are what has made Niagara run so boycotting them is not my idea of a good thing, but you’re all welcome to complain in any fashion that you wish. Mugsy, am an ardent feminist myself and I really enjoy your comments as well as everyone else’s. Don’t really need to rank the top ten posts, love the idea of promoting volunteerism and hope that this site won’t just be limited to Americans but that women from wherever who are intelligent will come and contribute too.

Liz, no pain no gain. You say you are below the poverty level and yet you are not willing to wake up the giant auto industry in your area? It is difficult for me to see so many who want improvement on someone else’s back. My company’s auto workers are in their 7th week supporting their families on $200/week strike pay to fight not accepting a 50% wage cut from a company that is highly profitable.

I am all for it as (ardant feminist) long as it doesn’t cost me anything” - that hits a nerve with me, sorry Liz and I am so glad to have you Canadians join in. Been to Niagra many times - BTW our plant in Buffalo NY was shut down by my CEO just recently and the work and jobs sent to Guanajuato Mexico.

I agree with Roberta G comments earlier (I’m not posting it as a reply because she won’t know). Mary’s “billion” comment really turned me off and seemed out of step with the other women who were discussing the site as a place to share ideas and change the world. Obviously, there’s got to be some monetary reward for the time/setup but to hear that’s the real aim is distressing. Maybe I was just being naive. On another topic, am concerned about this site being hit by web-bots. True, it’s very tedious on other forums to have to enter a code to post, but there is a reason for it.

I also saw the show, and decided to join to see what you intelligent successful ladies were up to, and to be a part of it. We can only control but so much as far as changing the world. Yesterday my eleven yr. old grandson was spouting about how he hated a girl on the school bus. He was wishing magic was real and has been disappointed ever since he found out that it was just trickery. I realized this was the opportunity to let them know about the real deal by teaching them about the real magic of life, and the laws of the universe, as in, “do unto others as you would have them to do unto you,” “if you can give it, you better be ready to take it,” “if you wish people harm, harm will come to you,” “if you don’t want to be treated badly don’t treat others badly.” Then my ten year old granddaughter said, “I love you grandma,” that was worth more than any thing I know. Later in the evening they drew pictures and came in the room to show me what good artist they are like their grandma. To please her.)

Cabaret lyrics - Money makes the world go round…. I see nothing wrong with a little honestly about making money from creating WOWOWOW. I prefer a little more honestly like this from the 3 Presidential Candidates. These ladies are putting in money and a lot of time, just for us to write what we think. Then get nothing back - please! Thanks ladies you made to the top, we didn’t. Thanks for taking the time to gave us a voice.

If I hadn’t been watching Charlie Rose the other night, I might never have had this purely enjoyable opportunity to read, learn, and express my own opinion on issues that concern all of us in today’s ever-changing society. I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed visiting this site since I learned about it and hope it continues. Regarding the comments about 40+ women: being 45 I find myself constantly learning new things not only about the world I live, but in particular, about myself. I’m learning more and more what a strong woman I am, and that I can survive in today’s world. I have been unemployed for several months, actively searching for a job, in newspapers and on the net, not caring about the salary as much as just having a job (I’m single, no children, and currently living with my parents, helping my father take care of my mother), and lo and behold what happens? I walk into the local Hardee’s on Sunday afternoon (where I had put an application in several weeks ago), and the manager who I spoke with when I submitted my app, hired me!! I realize this may not seem much to alot of you out here, but to me it’s just a sign that things are taking a turn for the better. You have no idea how grateful I am to have a job, even if it is a minimum-wage job and not nearly the salary I was making months ago. It’s the fact that I have a job and I can feel like a productive part of society once again!!!

Brava! Brava! Brava! Remember, this is just one stone across the river. Imagine your perfect job, one that would use your talents, engage your heart, and make you good money, and then keep looking! I’m so proud of you. Good ole yankee guts!

Congratulations Lori! Getting a job is extremely difficult these days! Any work is honest and pure and if you can bring a smile and light to someone’s day just by serving them that is a value only you can give in your special way. I have had many jobs in my life and it doesn’t matter what you do as long as you do your best. I know this sounds so Pollyannaish, but it is true.

If you’d like to do something TODAY to make a difference. Listen to and forward this EXCELLENT 6 Min speech by RFK, Jr. on the relationship between a green economy, jobs, and prosperity. California in the greenest state, and also the strongest economy. [Was a Stanford with my friend’s large dog, a man walked up and asked to pet him. Turned out to ve RFK, Jr. there for parent’s weekend with his daughter. S. Conti, you mention the Boomers of the 60s. I have tried to develop some ‘copy’ that brings that back, without the success I want, —yet. Anyway I state they are all grown up, experienced, and wisened, and know how to use the techy tools for democracy. My unofficial title is Boomers, —Boomerang! I started this about two years ago but can’t get the handle on it I want. Maybe someone else can. If you remember the Boomers did not need one charismatic leader to follow. They saw themselves as both leaders and followers. For as young as they were they had a good balance of individual and group. This is especially important now I think. People need to learn they are each leader and follower, individual and group. I really don’t like the idea that the media and advertisin’ are portrayin’ the Boomers as spoiled and big money retirees who are just thinkin’ of what they can do for themselves. When you think back the Boomers were a global force. Just imagine with them all grown up now what havac they could make all over the world. It may be Boomers on the West and East coast are rich, fat, and self indulged. But inland this isn’t so. And when we speak to the power of solidariety, —the Boomers could pull it off. First thing that needs to be corrected is: Don’t listen to anyone under 40! We laugh but think of the power of that statement of ‘don’t trust anyone over 30’. That was a really stupid one. The corpies and politicos picked right up on it didn’t they? This statement with their sleight of hand created the first ever division between the Elders of our culture and morphed them into people to be afraid of for wrinkle and death. Of late, as a Kennedy Kid, I realize that we and the Boomers have had sort of a Post Tramatic Syndrome for decades as the first generation to witness the brutal and certainly political deaths of Kennedy, King, and Kennedy, all displayed for us on the TV, in a free country during the first stages of our adult development. We mourned, it seems, for the Kennedys over and over and for Dr. Kings’ family, —but not for ourselves. We didn’t get ourselves through the grief stages. I see the Kennedy Kids and Boomers healin’ ourselves by goin’ forward to finish what we started. Gawd, just imagine it Suzanny! Just imagine it! Woodstock all over again at the Shuffleboard indoor arena! Haha. But imagine what could be done now with the internet and all the new techy tools used for the right purposes, —before the corps and politicos get in too much regulations for the purpose of profit and oppression! Just imagine. I still carry my tournament Frisbe in the back seat of my car! Hell, I’d drag my ‘piddle pads’ along and trek to Washington. But I think it can be done, what needs to be done, in more efficient and quicker ways than marchin’ to Washington. Altho it might be a great trip to do it just to thumb our noses and get our juices goin’! Gawd, I just never got past my idealistic stage. Ha ha and whoopie whoopie, —but girl on the Playfield of My Mind, I play this out real real serious.

Suzy De, thanks for the sites. I’m a big Bobby supporter! Good man. His Dad turned out to be also. Too bad we couldn’t see it through. HOLLAND: Thanks also. Found it. MAUREEN h: all issues are Women’s Issues don’t you think? Think of the home and your own community. Is there anything that is not a Woman’s Issue? I think what we need to understand is we are not taking our rightful place and the responsibility to do the job we’re capable of. It seems as if we are always waitin’ for permission. Whatdaya think? SUZANNE C: Lake Erie here for me, U.S. side. I think between you, and our Canadian cousin, and me we’ve, got the Lakes covered! To your statement as to Solar and grey weather. Yes, the Lakes does produce Grey. NanoScience has the research and first base development of a solar panel the size of our pinky fingernail. This nano solar panel can hold several times more energy than the large ones. The problem is storage of the energy for places like us and rainy days. They need money. Right now this is the greatest expense from my studies anyway, of solar technology. The govt. not doin’ much to help. Probably because they have their hands in the till of nuclear, wind, and corn energy and slippin’ it into their porfolios. Deals, ya know. We need to be sure and watch the Congress to make sure that policies and laws are NOT passed that stops the little man/ entrapreneur down home from gettin’ a piece of the pie. I hope for down home entrapreneurs to get together and pool monies and help the nanotechnolgy to reach ground zero for storage. Anyway there is this woman Physicist from Australia that Charlie had on about a year ago. She was adament against nuclear and carbon storage. I emailed Charlie askin’ for her back. Hey, ya never know! As to the plant energy: It takes something like a thousand tons of water to grow i ton of grain. This depletes not only the food source but also the water source when folk all over the world are already goin’ hungry and thirsty from lack of water. (Not to mention all the trees that were harvested for the multinats over the last 50 years messin’ up places like Bangledesh, our South West, and Africa. This is what man caused means! I have a problem with wantin’ to know if we can deplete the Sun even? But if money can be made truth won’t be told. BARBARA TAYLOR: this site belongs to the investors. It’s their baby. Anything we write is theirs I think. They own it. Now if they aren’t sharp enough to make a book outta it somehow, don’t feel sorry for them. Don’t we expect women to be smarter than this? I’m not gonna proof this. Apoligies ahead of time!
