Judith Martin: No Escape!

Judith Martin
When I am in the bathtub, reading. Family members who do not understand are given to shouting helpful announcements ("The telephone is ringing!" "I think I heard the doorbell!") through the door.

I wonder how many of us spend time in the bathtub reading. There is something about the water running that gives that waterfall sound and feel. And it also drowns out the world outside the door. But Judith, I review books so I find any and all places of absolute silence to escape into the world between the covers of the book. You can find me reading at 3am, definitely in place of TV, as I go through about 5 a week, carefully selected as the best possiblities. I don’t call this work - which is wonderful. Reading I consider delightful, and if the book is un-put-down-able, actually doing the writing of the review just flows out of me. Wonder how many of us find books and tubs an irresistible combination?

Not me. It sounds good. But everytime I’ve tried it, I end up with crinkled pages and wrinkled toes. How do you keep the book dry? And how do you force yourself to stop in the middle of a chapter to get out of the tub?

Same here Ms. Dee, sounds good in theory but more like work in real life, I’ll take reading in bed with a bunch of pillows around me, glass of wine and a snack.

I’ve personally ruined a number a good books being startled while luxurating in the bath. Used to be my favorite place to read.

Reading in bed is the heighth of luxury for me, too. Don’t need a snack, or anything else. Just read “Good People.” What a page-turner! Needed something to rid my brain of presidential/vice-presidential candidates. What a wonderful escape. Of course, the election and our country’s perilous finances are big problems. I’d like to know if our candidates, and other politicians ever read “escape” books. If not, they should. Perhaps they could get their brains in gear for what lies ahead…sort of, kicking back, get a fresh outlook and then back to the real world. Think that might work? Well-written books can act like a reawakening, and a joy to read.

Forgot to mention, I can’t get enough of Judith Martin’s columns. They are almost always a hoot. I’m a fan. She writes with humor and insight. Can’t beat that. Have you ever thought about writing a book…or two?
