Judith Martin on 'Old People's Cars'

Judith Martin
We buy a new car every 20 years, whether we need one or not, and the last two were American. But when we shopped for another, dealer after dealer showed us cars they proudly described as youthful. We asked for an old people’s car: two sofas on four wheels. None of them had one, so we had to buy something foreign.

I just bought a new vehicle in November and looked at every dealership in a seventy mile radius. This was the first time in my life when I bought from a dealership not under the American flag. I bought a Hyundai that was made in this country in the state of Alabama. The big three were giving no discounts even though sales were down. One dealership told me to come back with my husband because they wanted to talk to the man of the house. The Hyundai dealership encouraged me to test drive any vehicle so I could find the right fit for my needs. The warranty was far better than the American cars. I narrowed down my search to four vehicles that my husband and I test drove together. We both decided on the Hyundai crossover because we could fit a wheelchair or walker in the back for my father-in-law plus seat four adults with enough head and legroom with comfort. I have no regrets about buying a Santa Fe even though most of our previous cars were Buicks.

Two Sofas on Wheels! Love that! That is the way friends describe their 06 Jag sedan…!! They love it, and I must admit, its a dream to ride in or drive on a long road trip.
