Judith Martin's Sharp Point of View

Judith Martin

I thought literary heroes and heroines were the characters in the books, not the characters who wrote them, as others interpret this question. Becky Sharp, rather than Mr. Thackeray. (What do you mean, Becky is not contemporary? She certainly acts as if she were.)

I agree with you. I interpreted this to mean characters. I type this after having submitted a response. There are many I love besides Chauncey Gardener. Polgara and Belgareth come to mind. Dagny Taggart, another. Mireille in The Eight. Donald Shimoda. Verity Banks from A Calculated Risk. Kudra and Alobar dancing the bandaloop …my list is long.

Well, I’m not an admirer of Becky Sharp, but I love your witty response about her being/acting contemporary.
