Judy Bachrach: What's Not to Like About Sarah Palin?

EDITOR’S NOTE: Judy Bachrach writes for Vanity Fair, and is the creator of thecheckoutline.org, an online advice column for friends and relatives of the terminally ill.

What’s not to like about Sarah Palin, John McCain’s amazingly original choice as vice presidential material? That’s what I want to know. My husband tells me he likes her a lot because “She looks just like a girl I used to know with lots of great hair and good cheekbones, named Amber.” Which I think says it all.

For instance, when asked whether public school children should learn evolution or what is known in certain circles as “intelligent design,” meaning Darwin was a complete phony, Palin, who is the daughter of a science teacher, replied, “Teach both…and let kids debate both sides.”
I love that line, and not just because I flunked biology sophomore year, and would have appreciated the advocate from Wasilla defending my constitutional right to ignore amoebae.

I think Palin has it exactly right , and am not in the least surprised that back in her days as a Miss Wasilla beauty contestant she won the title of “Miss Congeniality.” In the educational arena, she is certainly very affable. Teach students that doing their homework every night is obligatory – and also that it’s optional – and let kids debate both sides. Tell them that if you divide a number by zero, you’re entitled to come up with all sorts of results. Explain in grammar 101 that the word “class” is a collective noun – or that maybe it isn’t – and let kids debate both sides.

In other words, in her view school is the home of untrammeled democracy. She is educationally pro-choice.

Well perhaps not entirely untrammeled. Perhaps not wholly pro-choice. In the personal arena, as it turns out, Palin is anti-choice. So if a condom breaks, then no, kids shouldn’t be permitted “to debate both sides.”

I don’t know what to say about John McCain and his decision-making abilities. Not long ago, I had to redo my will, and you wouldn’t believe the time spent trying to decide who would be the guardian of our kids in the event we died. Longtime friends, close relatives, lawyers – all these were examined, sifted, rejected, and then re-examined before we made a final selection.

And then there’s John McCain …

Sam, I found the story on dailykos.com Palin’s 12 hr flight was about judgment, not … by prius04 Sun Aug 31, 2008 at 11:24:18 AM PDT There are internet rumors about who really birthed Palin’s 5th child a few months ago. This diary is not about that, and that story does not belong on DailyKos. And to all those who placed that story, please be careful with the use of first names. We are not Republicans here. But to me, the bigger issue is the so called official story. The official story is the one that speaks volumes about Palin’s poor judgment, and her putting politics before family. * prius04’s diary :: :: * Gov. Palin left Alaska to attend a conference in Texas. She did this while 7 or 8 months pregnant. Some sources say 7, some say 8. This matters, though only a little. She flew to Texas carrying a Down’s syndrome baby. 1) Down’s syndrome babies often have special needs in the delivery room. You don’t want to deliver such a child on an airplane if at all possible. 2) It was her 5th pregnancy. Later pregnancies often progress rapidly. 3) And she was 43 or 44. This adds another complication though it probably wouldn’t contradict a long flight if you were earlier in your gestation. I doubt very much that ANY Obstetrician would give permission for such a 12 hour flight. Even for a very fit mother flying first class. I suspect she did not get permission and flew anyway. In any case, this decision, even with MD approval, showed questionable judgment and questionable priorities. But it gets worse. Her water broke in Texas. This usually results in contractions starting very soon afterwards, though not always. Remember, she has a Down’s baby and it’s her 5th pregnancy and she’s 43. She absolutely should have gone to the nearest hospital. Any other choice would be risky for the baby, and for herself for that matter. Instead, she got on a plane for a 12 hour flight. That’s right; she got on a plane for a 12 hour flight. Any Obstetrician who approved such a trip would be guilty of malpractice. And she was 43 years old. Any Obstetrician in America would have had a long conversation about the complexity of the situation she was in so don’t anyone dare suggest that maybe Gov Palin didn’t know all this. But it gets worse. There is not a single airline in America that would allow a woman this far along, who was more than likely ready to go into labor at any minute on that plane. So they could not have known. But it still gets worse. When she landed, she did not go to the nearest hospital, the hospital better equipped to handle a special needs delivery. Instead, she was driven 45 minutes to a smaller hospital. Don’t get me wrong, I think it commendable that this woman was governor while pregnant and I have no problem with her attention to this office and I feel that the father and siblings can do just fine with the provision of care for all involved. But when you have a special needs pregnancy, you MUST be willing to compromise. The cover story is that she made this flight because of some loyalty to having the child born in Alaska. Does anyone buy this? I think the more logical answer was that she knew that going to a Texas hospital might mean being stuck in Texas for a few days or a few weeks and she decided to risk it. She decided to risk it for her own political needs. To recap, getting on that plane to Texas showed poor judgment. Getting on that plane back showed horrible judgment. Simply horrible. And isn’t the only job – really – that the VP has is to be prepared to be the President? And isn’t the cornerstone of the job good judgment? People: this all happened 5 months ago. Not back in her foolish youth. We are supposed to care about Jennifer Flowers over and over, but something like this from 5 months ago is off limits? What she did in Texas to fly back to Alaska showed horrible disregard for her baby. Just horrible priorities. Just horrible judgment. And Judgment is what this election is all about. Now that I’ve said my piece, I do hope this topic gets picked up by the national Enquirer or some such. Sadly though, I think these kinds of stories only get picked up by that kind of media when it’s about Democrats. Rest assured, if Michelle had made decisions ANYTHING like this, we would all be hearing about it 24/7/365.

I cannot imagine a woman trapping herself on a plane after her water broke, but before giving birth. I thought that was the last warning sign to get to the hospital. But what would a bachelor like me know about it? I find the idea of her going back to Alaska out of some loyalty to the state interesting. 1) What does that say about her respect for the lower 48? 2) Does she not trust health care in Texas? 3) Texas out of her provider network? And now that her daughter has gone public with the classic teen pregnancy scenario, how does she stand up for abstinence-only when her own daughter is living proof that is doesn’t work? Sounds like another Cheney-pregnant daughter do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do redux.

Here’s an interesting link about her! Gossips are talking about her daughter being her grand daughter. What do you think http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/30/121350/137/486/580223

By the way, Ms. Bachrach, according to Ms. Manners, you can indeed get a ticket in Venice for being mal educato, so you might want to avoid Italy until you catch up on your high school science.

Can’t find that….in the dictionaries I have…..Thought Mel Educatto was that guy in the witness protection program over the bluff and down the creek…. Thanks for the heads up about liberal as pejorative…..I looked it up and it is a perfectly good word without a good PR person……like a weed is a perfectly good flower without a spin doctor…

Yahoo Babel translation, or alta fish translation, either one will get you there…. The story is in Ms. Manners’ book about living in Venice as she is wont to do at times. Wonderful book.

As is her wont……now there’s an archaic, funny word……Did you ever listen to “Beyond the Fringe:? That was Dudley Moore and some other guys …..?We were stuck in Mayfield, Ky. with no life of the mind except what we could entertain within our four walls…..and we listened to those guys…..The record player…..before the stereo…. I hope you are feeling all right …..I’ve lost the way to your blog….probably good for you….. Just keep thinking about your Paducah connection and your dad with the music……And, oops, you are thoroughly intimidating, but don’t let that slow you down….. Figure I don’t have to learn a lot of Italian unless/until the Alfa Romeo can’t get me to Wal-Mart….. And you’re not the real Miss Manners? How about our eminence grise? Can’t do accent grave or accent egue…. can’t…..I can’t…… Or our best grammarian…….. ? When folks start into this site, especially those who acknowledge that they don’t speak English, I always tell them to speak to you….. My house(built in the time of Thomas Jefferson 1800+) survived by seven inches being swept away in the 1937 flood…..speaking of Paducah…..my mother was stuck there for five weeks as a recruiter for a womens’ college who got stuck in Paducah in the flood…..So you think we didn’t learn to love Cobb salad in our later years? Don’t get me started about Mr. Bibb and the lettuce……

Later, doll……(term of endearment.). like when Obama said “honey” to somebody…what I hate is “hon”…….hate, hate, hate……so I tell anybody who calls me “hon”: “You have clearly confused me with a woman in the US House of Representatives(that would be The Honorable) and could you just tell me where to get a good case price on 10w/40, asshole……?”….. Sorry…I just live here…sans lattes, sans Mac Mansion, sans conversation at the post office, sans, sans, sans….’cept for y’all……..

So one of the first things Mrs. Palin did as governor was get pregnant? Now her daughter is pregnant as well and a senior in high school. What happens to her education now? Is there no heat in the governors mansion?

I’m upset that a 17 year old is going to be married because she is pregnant. As a parent, I would suggest that if my daugher became pregnant as a teenager (and I would take some of the blame, because I talk to my kids ALl the time about these kinds of things) and she wished to have the baby, she should receive the support of her family. But a marriage at 17 is robbing two young people of their ability to marry for all the right reasons, to pursue an education as single people, and to marry if and only if they are at a point in life where marriage makes sense. I’m 51 and I remember the days when girls HAD to get married. Um, what year is this? I understand how these things happen, but I also believe it is the role of a good mother to talk to her daughter about making smart choices for her future and for the future of the child. If, at some point, the two young people find each other suitable for life partnership, and can make a mature decision about a future, then by all means they should marry. Babies shouldn’t lead to marriage, and they don’t make teenage sex okay. we know better. At least I hope we do.

Hello Angela Ruth and welcome to wow…… Obama spoke today about how families are off limits…..and they should be….didn’t keep this site from nailing the Edwards family to the barn door for weeks….I think we might have this discussion here without putting it into the political arena…….Should let them keep it private and we can keep speaking to each other about…”well this is what happened to me..” Two friends who almost died at the hands of backstreet abortionists in the late fifties and early sixties…….My miscarriage, my daughter’s abortion……. It’s such a tired old set of sins…..negligible if it’s “us”, and burn in hell if it’s it’s “them”……. You can’t legislate enlightenment…..now ain’t that a shame……

I think its disappointing that our main evaluation of Palin stems back to what she taught the kiddies in school about “creationism”. I mean honestly, is she going to be teaching the United States about religion, I certainly hope not! Although I will not vote for McCain just because he has now chosen a woman VP candidate, I think we should evaluate her on her past decisions in government and her political principles instead of her spiritual views.

okay,,,,and welcome to wow….how did you arrive at that?…..her past decisions? How can you separate her present and past?….and , oh dear, the prospect of her future in the world of womens’ issues? Surely we’re joking….. This is not about Dems and Reps…… This is fundamental (pardon me, bad word)and basic…….. Terrifying…..that would be “really scary.”…… If Bush were an embarassment and Cheney likewise to our world evaluation….just think what this will mean…..globally…..next door…around the corner for girls who’ve had to go through fifteen years of this kind of crap…….just say no….and when you get knocked up, it’ll be granny who raises your kid…. This is so about us and them……and as long as the old white guys are running things, it will be ever thus……. I’m trying to get my passport in order…how ‘bout you?
