Julia Reed Sets the Record Straight on Palin (With a Little Help From Craig Ferguson)

Julia Reed

My post on Sarah Palin caused quite a conversation among our bloggers yesterday and I’m delighted. I just want to clarify a couple of things.

My point was — still is — that I thought some of the ground on which folks were criticizing Ms. Palin was a bit shaky, and the response from some women was a tad hypocritical, and, in the case of those who felt "insulted," "betrayed," melodramatic. I also said that I thought it was a mistake to underestimate — or indeed, belittle — her appeal, because even voters who don’t agree with some or all of her politics (like my friend who is leaning toward Obama) will identify with her. There are all kinds of reasons to be for or against Palin — you can hate or love her stand on abortion and oil drilling, you can bemoan her lack of foreign policy experience or like her small-town, hands-on background. Politics is also strangely personal — I have a friend who can’t get past Palin’s "Audrey Hepburn wannabe" updo, just as people with longer memories may remember when Joe Biden first got his hair plugs. But it doesn’t have to be ugly personal. (Speaking of which, one of our bloggers accused me of defending Palin because my husband is an oil and gas lawyer. For the record, I’m too fully formed at this point to make my decisions based on what my husband does for a living, which is one of the reasons he likes me.)

Tonight, Palin will be interviewed by Charles Gibson, whom the always level-headed Liz rightly calls "estimable," and from then on she’ll be out there and so will her record. The post-convention silly season will give way to what is going to be an increasingly hard-fought campaign (this election is so much closer than anyone could have imagined even six months ago) and we’ll see what all four of these people are made of. Hopefully, at least some of the talk will turn back to actual issues, everyone will remember that it is Obama and McCain who are the candidates (including Obama and McCain themselves, both of whom seem to have forgotten), and there will be far less talk of lipstick on either hockey moms or pigs.

Which leads me, finally, to the reason why I am posting again. Last night, half asleep, I was jolted awake by Craig Ferguson, the Scottish late-night talk-show host on whom I have a mad crush. He is always spot-on and hilarious, but last night he delivered what can best be described as a public service message without being pompous. A brand new American, he gently tweaked both the press and the candidates and reminded us of what’s important.

No Kill and Drill Palin
DeBurca, “I predict McCain will lose the election, Sarah Palin will disappear into obscurity as far as the lower 48 + Hawaii go, and her husband will end up with some type of reality show.” I hope you are right!

He is so sexy isn’t he? I think he’s the best but I hope his growing popularity doesn’t change him. What makes him so good is his down to earth attitude about the job he does.

Nah, he’s a Taurus - he’ll always been down to Earth, hehe… He definitely does possess that special brand of wit I look for in entertainment. And he’s absolutely adorable, like a teddy bear! Dare I say, I’d probably go straight for that man.

Marjorie Here it is for you! Did you read in today’s NY Times:”Those awaiting Biden gaffes aren’t disappointed” by John Broder, don’t miss it, it’s great!

sibelle, I couldn’t find the article you mention, unless it’s this one by Broder on the 11th (although this wouldn’t be considered a gaffe by me): …Nashua Community College, Mr. Biden said, “Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. Quite frankly, it might have been a better pick than me.” He added, “She’s qualified to be president. I mean that sincerely, she’s first rate.” . I would have to say this for Biden, at least he understands the reality of things. Too bad Dean, Pelosi, Brazile, et al couldn’t have figured it out sooner. Oh well, ç’est la vie as they say.

I loved what Craig Ferguson. Yes, Julia, this is election is personal in many ways. It is intruded into my life with my significant other. He thinks Cindy and Sarah are hot and said he is voting for them! He wants to see pretty babes for the next four years. This from a smart, educated man. I think he is just doing this to “get my goat” as we say in the south. However, I’ve tried to cut him off if you get my meaning. But he is just too cute for words so that is not working. So, if he wants to eat he has to cook. I am retired from the kitchen. He is the better cook, anyway, and I am gaining weight while I sit here and read WOW. Thanks.

It takes a new American to really show us what those of us born here take for granted. And Craig always has the best monologues on late night - hands down!

I can see why you have a crush on him. His “real solutions to real problems” and that we don’t care if they come from the right or left is sooo right on. at least for me. I don’t care if it’s a republican, a democrat or a 12 year old kid from Ohio who comes up with the answers..

I’ve been posting this Ferguson video all over this site today, he was great last night! As far as Ms Reed’s thoughts that people are being a tad “melodramatic” far from it. People are tired of being handed a bill of goods and that is what Sarah Palin is, a cynicle attempt by the Republican Party to distract people and the media even MORE from the issues and the fact that they have had control of our government for years now and it’s a mess McCain is offering us more of! In the words of Garrison Keillor, “So the Republicans have decided to run against themselves. The bums have tiptoed out the back door and circled around to the front and started yelling, ‘Throw the bums out!’ ” They have thrust a virtual unknown at us who could end up in the position of being one old man’s heartbeat from the presidency, they have lied about her history, have not been forthcoming about her views on the issues, have not vetted her properly so that disturbing information is trickling out daily, and have forced the public to do all their own digging for facts because they won’t allow the media to question her. This IS something to get worked up about and many of us in the public are worked up about it and don’t appreciate being told we should wait patiently for more information to be fed to us in the GOP’s own good time. Time is running out, it’s nearly November. As far as Charlie Gibson goes, I’m not surprised they chose him to do this interview, but a staged, planned interview is not media scrutiny an that needs to be done sooner rather than later.
