Julia Reed: From Gloria Steinem to Norah O'Donnell, Misogyny and Sexism Are Fine if the Target (Palin) Is on the Right

Julia Reed

Last week, I was a tad distracted by the hurricane hurtling my way, but I spent my evacuation going between coverage of the storm that was Gustav and the storm that was Sarah Palin (whose speech I watched upon my return to New Orleans at a Magazine Street bar, as we still had no electricity). Now that my power has been restored, the mess that was my yard has been cleaned up (I have the scars to prove it) and New Orleans is out of danger (for the moment), I feel as though I must put in my two cents regarding the response of the media to Sarah Palin, including that of some of my fellow wOwers.

First, let me say that I was appalled by it generally, but I’ll try to dismantle the reaction piece by piece. First, there is the stunning double standard. In an op-ed piece in the Los Angeles Times, Gloria Steinem refers to the “ridicule and misogyny” suffered by Hillary Clinton. Both those words could certainly apply to what Sarah Palin went through last week. Blogs accused her of faking her own pregnancy with a Down syndrome child to cover up for her daughter. Mainstream journalists — female mainstream journalists — like Norah O’Donnell questioned whether a mother of five could effectively function as vice president. More piled on about her irresponsibility in accepting the nomination with five children, including one with special needs. Alan Colmes suggested on his blog that her airplane travel had possibly contributed to the fact that her child was born with Down syndrome. It went on and on and on. Where was the feminist outcry? Plenty of Republican women were sickened over the treatment of Hillary Clinton (hell, even I cried at the video that introduced her convention speech), but there has been no reaching across party lines to defend Palin. Not even when Martin Peretz dismissed and demeaned her by saying, “I give [Palin] her due: she is pretty like a cosmetics saleswoman at Macy’s.” If he had said that about someone who agrees with them on the issues, Steinem et al would have gone crazy. And therein lies the real truth. All the opiners who called the choice “insulting” (including my friend Sally Quinn before her about-face) really meant that it was not a choice that they would have made; she is not a woman who thinks or votes like them, she is pro-life, not pro-choice. (I too am pro-choice, but I respect the choices of other people — especially one, like Palin, who walks her talk.) Apparently only those women are worthy of defending. When so many of the most vocal critics weighed in by calling Palin a “cynical” choice, I had to ask myself, “Who is really being cynical here?”

I don’t know what people think we’re playing here, but this is politics, not checkers. Every veep in history has been chosen for a calculated reason.

Cynical was also the word used by GOP strategist Mike Murphy (who once worked for McCain, but was not asked to join the campaign this go-round) in his off-camera remarks with our fellow wOwer Peggy Noonan. While they discussed (in a conversation both thought was not being recorded) her lack of experience, Murphy termed McCain’s choice as cynical. Others have called it “pandering” to women and “calculating.” Well of course it is, up to a point. If you want the most level-headed and experienced guy in the party, you’d choose Dick Lugar. You might also lose as badly as he did when he gave it a go in 1996. If you wanted an experienced governor, you might go for Tom Ridge, who is another white guy Vietnam Vet. I don’t know what people think we’re playing here, but this is politics, not checkers.

Perhaps we should all stop for a minute and take this all in from a higher vantage point. Could it be possible that we’re all forgetting that this is politics, and that every single one of us is being played so one side or the other will win? I know, it sounds cynical, but I think that’s what’s really happening here. There are real issues at stake in this election, and yet we’re spending so much time, energy and thought over whether we agree or relate to a VP pick. The media sees that we’re interested and seizes on it, and that’s why there’s so much talk out there about her. (And so very little about McCain, have you noticed?) Is it because she’s a woman that the world is fascinated? If she were a man with the same story, would we care so much? I offer that, in the big scheme of things, Palin is neither as bad or as good as she’s being made out to be by anyone. I think the Republicans are happy because McCain was toast and she rescued his ticket for now. I think the Democrats are unhappy for the same reason. There, that was easy. Can we talk about something important now?

Hi Susan, Do you mean you want to talk about the economy, foreign policy, health care and Constitutional rights 60 days before the election - instead of Governor Palin?

Both sides need to stop with the double standard. Bill O’Reilly filleted the Spears for Jamie Lynn, then lauds the Palins for Bristol. Will Rush Limbaugh, who snarked on watching HRC get older in the White House point out that Sarah Palin will probably go through menopause during her term? Personally, I think it’s condescending to say “gosh, she ran the PTA so let her prove herself!” Okay, I’ve been to PTA meetings and I agree, some of those ladies would put Putin in a dress and make him serve tea to their dollies… but she needs to have already proven herself, out the gate. Are we going to be stuck with her slightly misinformed gaffes on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, interspersed with snide, homespun comments to the effect of “well, I can clean and dress a moose and can Obama do that to arugula? Do they even sell moose at Whole Foods?? Girlfriends, are you with me?!?” Sarah Palin represents the dumbing down of the GOP - gross oversimplifications, writing off those who see nuance as elitists, clinging to a small-town American fantasy that doesn’t exist. What’s going to be next out of her mouth…”Darfur? What for?? We have problems at home!!!”

No Kill and Drill Palin
Carole, “Sarah Palin represents the dumbing down of the GOP - gross oversimplifications, writing off those who see nuance as elitists, clinging to a small-town American fantasy that doesn’t exist.” After 8 years of Bush-Cheney, Newt, Tom Delay, et al didn’t think the GOP could get dumbed-down any further…..thought it had reached such a low that they were done. But like the hucksters, flim-flam men, and hypocrites that they are…they out did themselves with this one They lie constantly about the bridge to nowhere and earmarks…..even though the lie has been completely dispproved and on air with Palin’s own words on tape. And know why? Because as Hitler’s propagandist said, “Tell a big enough lie over and over again and people believe it.” This entire thing is a lie, a sham and a fraud. Ed Koch who supported GWB is voting for Obama because he said Palin is “Scary.” That too. .

Sorry, I already know enough about Sarah Palin and her abuse of power while Mayor and now Governor. I never thought we’d experience anything like the last 8 years of government, but I sure don’t want 4 more years of a female Dick Cheney in office!

What I find most interesting is the women where I live who are in love with Sarah Palin are in love with her because of her social positions and cannot recite one piece of policy she is for or her record other than the bridge to nowhere which is certainly twisting the truth or the ebay story hmmm again a twist of the truth. If I ask them about what she is for on energy they don’t know and I seem to get the same glazed look when I ask about foreign policy, environmental issues or many other issues I would like to ask the potential president of the USA. So some of us may be critical of her but many were critical of Dan Quayle, who came out of nowhere. Which leads me to make the leap that she was brought on the ticket for her beliefs on social issues to get just the type of reaction they have in my very republican state because our base was not excited about McCain. The “Moral Majority” is back and John McCain has decided he cannot win without them. There will be a price to pay for this alliance. I am a born again christian but there are some very extreme people involved in this movement. Make no mistake they will target the Supreme Court. Sarah Palin knows all their buzz words and she is rallying them. Do not underestimate them. If you are a moderate Republican that is not voting on social issues be very careful. Please investigate the agenda you are voting into office. I believe our founding fathers left countries where the religious establishments of their time persecuted those who had different beliefs and those establishments also ran their governments. If you believe in separation of church and state be careful. I maybe unfair but I don’t care for hunting as a hobby whether it is a man or women, I think its a little sick. As a soccer mom, sure we might share that mom sports thing and I am a successful working mom with a ton of responsibility just like she is but I find many of her hobbies (like shooting wolves out of helicopters) and beliefs on things like the polar bears not being endangered and her policies repugnant, I do not agree with many of her stands on issues like energy, environment, global warming, health care, the war, freedom of choice, how to convert gays through prayer, abstinence, and on and on and on. She is the one who describes herself as a pitbull with lipstick. Talk about judgment and temperament, I bet our allies are. Just think with Alaskas less than diverse population she will be meeting many from different faiths, cultures and belief systems for the first time, I wonder how well she will be able to honor those as she attends the funerals and weddings of foreign dignitaries. I have not bashed her or name called but I have questioned her policies and belief systems both on a personal and professional level. I did not question Hillarys readiness to be president or vice president nor would I have many other Republican women with a much more seasoned resume or wisdom or judgement but they were passed over why? I think many of us know the answer to that question.

Thank you Julia - you said what I could not get across in my posts. I do not totally agree with Palin stands. I disagree with how other women are putting the person (Palin) down because their views are different. We should not be tearing down other women with different views. Argue what you believe, but don’t disrespect a woman. I was dreading to click on wOw this morning after all the bashing these past days. Thank you so much, it was a breath of fresh air.

No Kill and Drill Palin
Barbara— A woman who advocates/funds use of high-powered helicopters and snipers to hunt down wildlife, who is for the oil companies and against the environment, who is part of the movement that wants to replace our Consitution with their extremist religious views, who uses her children as cover and then declares them off limits, who is basically ruthless and duplicitous…is not a woman who deserves my respect —only my contempt and she has it to the 9th degree.

Suzanne - all I’m saying is ‘Argue what you believe, but don’t disrespect a woman. ’ You can bring up your points on Palin as much as you want, but it doesn’t change my opinion to be respectful. Do not downgrade women, like men have for years. It’s very possible you only read the negative side of Palin. Have your actually read other information on her that is positive/

Barbara—There IS nothing postive about Palin….except that she stay up in Alaska and hopefully be subjected to criminal charges.
