Julia Reed: From Gloria Steinem to Norah O'Donnell, Misogyny and Sexism Are Fine if the Target (Palin) Is on the Right

Julia Reed

Last week, I was a tad distracted by the hurricane hurtling my way, but I spent my evacuation going between coverage of the storm that was Gustav and the storm that was Sarah Palin (whose speech I watched upon my return to New Orleans at a Magazine Street bar, as we still had no electricity). Now that my power has been restored, the mess that was my yard has been cleaned up (I have the scars to prove it) and New Orleans is out of danger (for the moment), I feel as though I must put in my two cents regarding the response of the media to Sarah Palin, including that of some of my fellow wOwers.

First, let me say that I was appalled by it generally, but I’ll try to dismantle the reaction piece by piece. First, there is the stunning double standard. In an op-ed piece in the Los Angeles Times, Gloria Steinem refers to the “ridicule and misogyny” suffered by Hillary Clinton. Both those words could certainly apply to what Sarah Palin went through last week. Blogs accused her of faking her own pregnancy with a Down syndrome child to cover up for her daughter. Mainstream journalists — female mainstream journalists — like Norah O’Donnell questioned whether a mother of five could effectively function as vice president. More piled on about her irresponsibility in accepting the nomination with five children, including one with special needs. Alan Colmes suggested on his blog that her airplane travel had possibly contributed to the fact that her child was born with Down syndrome. It went on and on and on. Where was the feminist outcry? Plenty of Republican women were sickened over the treatment of Hillary Clinton (hell, even I cried at the video that introduced her convention speech), but there has been no reaching across party lines to defend Palin. Not even when Martin Peretz dismissed and demeaned her by saying, “I give [Palin] her due: she is pretty like a cosmetics saleswoman at Macy’s.” If he had said that about someone who agrees with them on the issues, Steinem et al would have gone crazy. And therein lies the real truth. All the opiners who called the choice “insulting” (including my friend Sally Quinn before her about-face) really meant that it was not a choice that they would have made; she is not a woman who thinks or votes like them, she is pro-life, not pro-choice. (I too am pro-choice, but I respect the choices of other people — especially one, like Palin, who walks her talk.) Apparently only those women are worthy of defending. When so many of the most vocal critics weighed in by calling Palin a “cynical” choice, I had to ask myself, “Who is really being cynical here?”

I don’t know what people think we’re playing here, but this is politics, not checkers. Every veep in history has been chosen for a calculated reason.

Cynical was also the word used by GOP strategist Mike Murphy (who once worked for McCain, but was not asked to join the campaign this go-round) in his off-camera remarks with our fellow wOwer Peggy Noonan. While they discussed (in a conversation both thought was not being recorded) her lack of experience, Murphy termed McCain’s choice as cynical. Others have called it “pandering” to women and “calculating.” Well of course it is, up to a point. If you want the most level-headed and experienced guy in the party, you’d choose Dick Lugar. You might also lose as badly as he did when he gave it a go in 1996. If you wanted an experienced governor, you might go for Tom Ridge, who is another white guy Vietnam Vet. I don’t know what people think we’re playing here, but this is politics, not checkers.

Not that it isn’t tricky, but here is another statute: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/8/usc_sec_08_00001403——000-.html

Thanks Julia Reed for your article. Many of us like Sarah Palin and its looking like more and more women across America do too. The polls this morning reflect that people want “change you can count on”…the kind of change Sarah Palin and John McCain are talking about.

Julia- It isn’t “misogyny and sexism” it is her Dark Ages brand of dangerous and un-Constitutional views. Her duplicity, her cynicism, her abuses of power, her hypocrisy, her ignorance, her basis dishonesty, i.e.: Washington Post Exclusive: Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home… “Clearly, It Is And It Looks Like A Scam — You Pay Yourself To Live At Home”… Taxpayers Also Funded Husband’s, Kids’ Travel…Alaska State Finance Director: “We Cover Expenses Of Anyone Who’s Conducting State Business. I Can’t Imagine Kids Could Be Doing That” She is the worst VP pick in US history. Her attacks on Obama are snide, snarky, coded…and she’s an imbecile with a poor record. She is a tool for the oil companies, a foe to the environment and wild life and women, used her own children for cover and then declared them off season. She stepped into the ring and politics is a dirty sport. So give me a break. This isn’t about sexism it’s about the future of our country and the world that’s been decimated by one idiot/criminal team for 8 years we can’t stand 4-8 more. She left a tiny town $27M in debt and missed a recall election by 44 votes. She’s the new gov. of the least populated most backward state with the most HS droputs. She doesn’t know basics like what Frannie Mae or Freddie Mac do. She is a Rovian selection to deflect attention off McBush…and she is doing it in the most calculated of ways: ie in Colorado Springs yesterday conflating $100M, 10 homes McBush with the hurting middle class, many of them hurting by the policies of GWB that he’s voted for 90%+ of the time. Although there is plenty that is despicable about Sarah Palin…..she’s said enough in her own words at her crazy church to prove that she is anathema to everything I value and care about and our Founding Fathers, too. It has nothing to do with her gender and everything to do with her ‘mind’ ‘values’ and ‘beliefs’ her vulgarity, her tackiness, her total and complete incompetence and ignorance, her Ditto-head following and her insane religious views that Barry Goldwater warned about getting into the government and that were the subject of the documentary Jesus Camp. Her own words should have kept her from consideration for a job that puts this coarse, crude, common, ignorant women a heartbeat away from the Oval Office. This is a joke, a farce, a horror story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG1vPYbRB7k

Suzanne as always—cogent, and right on—thank you for a lucid account of Palin and her obvious lack of ability to hold this job===Tom Jefferson must be rolling over in his grave is disgust at what his dream has become.

Hey, Frank, I tried to email you, but it was bounced back to me. Anyway, Tom Friedman is going to be on Charlie Rose tonight for the whole hour; as you know he just came out with his new book, which I already have ready to read. And tomorrow night, my favorite economist, Rober Rubin is going to be on with Larry Summers, so far for the whole hour. As far as the economy, that will be so very informative. I hope you can see them.

Frank—Take a look at the Democracy Now interview I post above with Chris Hedges who has a Pulizer Prize and a grad degree in theology and has written about the insane (and they are insane) and unConstitutional religious wacko views that this woman holds. She is a danger to the US and the world. Along with it posted the vid of a Cornell prof that head Theocracy Watch. Tom Paine and Thomas Jefferson would be appalled….because this entire farce is appalling.

I’ve heard her “pastor” and I use that term loosely—and you are correct the “church” she belongs to to is bizarre to say the least.

Whoppi doesn’t like the term Barbie. Other’s don’t like “Beauty Queen”. I’m not a big fan of calling Ellen Degeneres a “cougar”. http://www.wowowow.com/post/ellen-degeneres-and-portia-de-rossi-wedding-… One of my fears is that the very conservative, fundamentalist Ms. Palin i(n addition to her other charms) might in her heart agree with that other notable graduate of the Miss America educational system, Minister Anita Bryant. Note that I was P.C.(according to Wow) and didn’t call Anita a beauty queen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS91gT3XT_A Anyone else concerned about a new and regressive homophobia?

Who was it that said America is the only country that went from barbarianism to decadence without the intervening period of civilization?

Thanks for the article, Julia!!! It was thoughtfully written. This wOw group has put the spotlight on the less attractive attributes of some of its members. The amount of venom and hate and fear expressed suprises and disgusts me at times. Maureen Dowd’s put-down comment in her article in the NY Times about Palin’s flat midwestern accent is indicative of the attitude I hear and see many times from members of the press. Wonder if she’d have downed Palin if she had a Southern accent or a New York accent. I try to be thoughtful, not emotional, in my judgement of the candidates. I’m still collecting information and haven’t yet decided who will get my vote. Each candidate has failings and good points. Its an exciting time to be alive. I’ll be working at the neighborhood polling place in November. I know we will be very busy this time.

Buh- Bye
Wow, I totally 100% agree with Julia Reed! Indeed the planets are falling out of alignment. This has been a most disturbing election to me. The electoral system is broken. It was always a little cracked, but now it is split right in two. I laid in bed mulling about the choice of president last night. My comfort level with President McCain growing steadily. Policies are important, but character shapes policy. I never trusted Bush. But McCain has my full respect. Whereas… Obama. It’s the deceptions he has perpetrated that I worry about so much, and this hideous, hideous campaign run by his rabid team of surrogates. I believe this approach is at the very core of the man. A man driven by a deep-seated ambition. Beyond these sexist attacks on Hillary and Palin we need to look at the serious efforts that have shaped Obama’s nominations for senator and now president. Obama had all of his opponents names removed from the ballot to run unopposed in the state senate in the mid 90s. Just for a moment think about doing this yourself. Really think about what it takes to do this. You are running for a position of leadership on a council, at an organization, your PTA, your church, your state or city government and you decide the best way to win is to systematically get your opponents off the ballot. So you gather all the signatures of nomination for the other candidates and secretly look for any minor technicalities - like printing instead of writing - to eliminate their names and boot your opponents out of the race, which means you win by default. Is that sort behavior in your character? Could you do that? Personally I wouldn’t have the stomach for it. But Obama does. He did exactly that in illinois during his first run for the senate. Kicking his mentor out of the race as well. That is just cold, calculated politics in my books. In my opinion it’s exactly what he did again this primary season with all the corruption in the caucuses. While Hillary got the popular vote in states like Texas, he grabbed the delegate majority at caucuses by swarming meetings and overrunning sign-in sheets with voters who weren’t even registered, hadn’t voted that day, or weren’t even present. In some caucuses they even blocked the doors to disallow entry by Hillary supporters. Again Obama cast the voters’ rights to the wind. He knew what side his bread was buttered on. Win - at all costs. Obama’s operatives launched a carefully orchestrated attack on the democratic system. Check out these videos about the organized system of caucus fraud perpetrated by the Obama camp. Testimonials from the actual Democratic investigators. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXNqFQmGxDU If this doesn’t upset you enough and you want to see more, go to the documentarian’s website. http://wewillnotbesilenced2008.com/video/index.htm. The only HOPE I see with this candidate is his personal hope to be president. The CHANGE I see is that your voices will no longer be heeded at the ballot box. Illinois, Michigan, Florida, caucuses. McCain is not Bush. If you think a man who chose to stay in a POW camp so as not to demoralize his compatriots when he was in agony suffering with unset broken bones — is the same as a man who was a party boy who slid his way out of service - then you are gobbling up the carefully prepared slogans. But Obama… well, actions speak volumes.
