Julia Reed on the 'Grating Superority' and 'Absolute Smugness' of Obama Supporters

Julia Reed
The one thing I absolutely will not miss is the grating superiority and absolute smugness of Obama supporters who rule the chattering classes, most recently exemplified by James Spader and the writers of my favorite TV show, "Boston Legal," on Monday night. Spader even managed to remind the audience (many of whom, like me, tuned in for some light-hearted ENTERTAINMENT) that John McCain had been diagnosed with no less than four melanomas. In the end even the die-hard republican Denny Crane had "crossed over" leaving the beaming Spader to blot away tears. My favorite balcony scenes have now been ruined forever. Maybe after today, we can get back to realizing that this was an election, not a divine mission, and that Obama is a very talented novice who ran a smart campaign (against not very rousing opposition), and who will now (barring some seriously major upset) be president, a very, very difficult thing to be.

Julia, I am curious as to why you think we Obama supports are more “grating” and “smug”. I understand why you consider us superior..

As I remarked on another page, the expectations are so high, hearts will be broken over the next 12 months. It’s important that those who see him as this country’s salvation keep their expectations in check because change won’t happen overnight. I am hoping that he will become more pro-business — much like Bloomberg, who is a fiscal conservative, yet a social liberal. In addition to the economic mess we’re in, we are missing confidence right now and I hope that he will inspire it. Regardless, this is a great country —- McCain’s concession speech was gracious and admirable and Obama’s speech was equally as gracious, as well as inclusive and inspirig. They should be examples of how it should be done to the rest of the world.

Boy, I am thankful this morning to be a part of the “superior” party that does not appeal to bitter, angry people like you. Your negative, anti-intellectual party has virtually torn our country apart for years. This is a new era… get used to being surrounded by people who are confident in our potential….not “smug.” This election was about the enlightened verses the un-enlightened - America is back on track and I deeply hope that people like you, Sarah Palin, Mary Matalin and the worst of all, Nancy Pfotenhauer disappear to the back pages.

Well said, Jackie. I said I was smug, but it’s not true. I’m relieved. “Smug” reminds me of when the Republicans stole the election from Gore. “Smug” reminds me of Mission Accomplished. Smug reminds me of George Bush swaggering out after his second election, and saying that he guessed he had a mandate now, and he was really going to do what he wanted to do. And so he did. I just feel so relieved.

Julia, your post makes YOU sound smug and superior. I’m not sure exactly how you take what you see on one TV show (which I think is still terrific, for what it’s worth) and turn that into labeling Obama supporters in general as smug and superior. What will I NOT miss? I will not miss the hypocrisy of conservatives who dismiss Obama as all style and no substance, yet embrace the superficiality of Palin. That’s just one in a long line of things I will not miss about this campaign. My congratulations to Obama. AND to his supporters, who worked very very hard and ran a clean, dignified campaign.

Julia: The one thing I absolutely will not miss is the grating superiority and absolute smugness of Obama supporters who rule the chattering classes,… Aha! I am not alone.

Marjorie — No, you are not alone! I just wish we had seen more of Julia’s articles on here during this LONG — too LONG —-campaign. And, she stated her views ladies — just like all of you have done throughout this campaign. And, as all of you have said, over and over again, we all have our own opinion. Some of the ladies on here are great posters - the others are members of the chattering classes. She is very nice — I would have said —-more like “attack dogs” or “pecking hens”. And, since I am going out of town —-peck away!!!

Oh, for heaven’s sake, Julia. Only the smug and superior would refer to any segment of the American people as “the chattering class.” Nobody’s above or below you, we know that.

I’ll take a “smug,” grating” Obama supporter any day over a self-righteous Republican like a Tom Delay or Newt Gingrich who worships the almighty de-regulated god of the free market. The election may not represent a shift to left; at least it signifies a rejection of the far-right wing.

Julia, I doubt that is over. It is now empowered. But… Obama is now president elect…. moving on.

Julia, I agree with you “Boston Legal”, it went a little to far. Love the show and most times agree with their point. I’ll miss the interaction and reading other viewpoints. What I will not miss is the mean spirited, name calling. If you don’t like Palin, ok we got it. But the way she was trashed was uncalled for. I’m ashamed women turned on another woman and acted like men from the past. (and even present day, a little) We now need to follow Obama and McCain’s speechs at the end. Let’s all become gracious. Well, at least for a while when we all find something else to disagree on. :)

Julia Reed, What you miss is that Barack Obama spoke to the best in the American people while John McCain, unfortunately chose to speak to the worst in the American people. The best in us won. And after what this country has been through this past 8 years today feels great. If you choose to call that smug, it says more about you than it does about Obama’s supporters.
