Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius Could Be Top Contender for HHS Post

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius may be nominated to take the Health and Human Services seat that would have been Tom Daschle’s.

A possible Sebelius nomination has been discussed almost from the moment Daschle withdrew his bid amid tax-related woes. Now, the noise over that possibility is getting louder, but Sebelius isn’t the only lawmaker in the running: Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen is also said to be in the mix, Politico reports, as is Obama transition chief John Podesta. A source said other contenders may be considered, and that a decision was likely soon.

Sebelius, however, has long ties with the President — she was an early and ardent supporter of his campaign, and was a top surrogate for him during the campaign to women’s groups. She was long thought to have been a choice for some sort of Cabinet position, and her name has also been floated as a possible 2010 Senate candidate. But so far, she has said she plans to stay in Kansas and try to deal with her state’s budget problems.

But last week, Sebelius met with Obama’s senior adviser, Valerie Jarrett, in between meetings in Washington. Sebelius’s spokeswoman, Beth Martino, confirmed the meeting with Jarrett to the AP but only said: "She had a meeting with her friend Valerie Jarrett, whom she has known for several years."

Although Sebelius’s tenure as her state’s insurance commissioner prior to becoming governor is seen as a plus for her, Bredesen is already meeting some resistance from Health Care for America Now, which says it "couldn’t think of anyone more wrong for health-care reform or more wrong for America." That group has fought with Bredesen over the years as he tried to cut spending in the state’s TennCare program, which provides health care for the poor. Bredesen’s office says he hasn’t even been contacted by the White House for any job.

Let’s hope that anyone Obama picks won’t have anymore tax problems!

Linda, If he takes her as the pick for Health and Human Svcs will it be any better? I don’t know much about her politics, but it seems that you don’t like them. What is wrong with her? Thanks!

You want facts? It’s just so much easier to simply diss someone — why actually state a REASON.

Please. Another favor to be repayed? The Daschle one didn’t work out. Let’s stop repaying favors and get someone in there who can negotiate legislation, kick butt and has circled the healthcare drain before. It should’ve been Hillary, who had a passion for the issue and tried to ram universal health care through during Bill’s tenure. Now, make it either Bill Clinton (who has been down this universal heath care road before) or maybe Howard Dean. Someone who actually understands about care. Or? Any suggestions, anyone else? I knew Daschle was a mistake. I hope he isn’t hanging around too long pulling more strings at the White House. He could end up being Obama’s Karl Rove and his downfall politically. Frankly, I liked how Obama took on Republicans this week. Hardball baby, hardball. He has to be his own man now. Not a marionette for the old school - links to big business - politicians.

Please take her! For the love of, (name your favorite superior being here), please let the Obama Administration have her. If there is one person in Kansas that can really deliver hope and change it is Kathleen. Did you know she is Pro-Life? Kansas abortions down 8.5% during her tenure. She is also Pro-Gun? On April 21, 2008, Sebelius signed Senate Bill 46 into law, which repealed a 1933 state law prohibiting civilian ownership of machine guns and other firearms restricted by the National Firearms Act of 1934! Also against same-sex marriage! Sebelius did not support an April 2005 amendment to the Kansas Constitution that made same-sex marriage in the state unconstitutional. She is however a Green candidate and will bring her global warming ideas to D.C. and cost all of us countless more billions.

Yikes! I’m starting to feel like Obama and I have different ideas about how health care needs to be reformed.
