Kate Winslet Earns Best Actress, Joins Legends Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman and Shirley MacLaine (Video)

Sophia Loren glittering

Never before have these five legendary actresses shared a stage, but Sophia Loren, Shirley MacLaine, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and Marion Cotillard — all former best-actress Oscar winners — came together last night to present Kate Winslet with her long-awaited Academy Award.

First, each actress addressed the nominees’ performances and talents. And the moment seemed straight out of Hollywood movie. It was classic, sentimental and — of course — glamorous.

Cotillard, the young French actress who won last year’s Oscar for her powerful performance in "La Vie en Rose" introduced Kate Winslet. She described Winslet’s performance as "brilliant." As an actress, she said, Winslet is passionate, vulnerable with extraordinary depth. What a compliment!

The singing, dancing and acting extraordinaire MacLaine introduced the super-rising star, the beautiful Anne Hathaway. Not only did MacLaine compliment Hathaways range of acting talents but went on to also praise her vocals. "I think you have an extraordinary voice … Keep singing, too," she said as Hathaway beamed. She’s so adorable! We can’t wait to see her continue to blossom.

Berry, the first black actress to win an Academy Award praised first-time nominee Melissa Leo for her "authentic portrayal" in "Doubt." "You played a woman that lost everything," said the glamorous Berry. It was a performance "too exceptional to be ignored." We certainly agree.

The sensual Loren, who wore a Damiani choker and earrings from her namesake collection, praised the spectacular Meryl Streep.

"It’s hard to know where to begin with the next nominee," Loren said in her beautiful Italian accent. "Her name itself has come to represent a whole world of an unmatched excellence … so it’s probably best to simply start there: Meryl Streep." Streep looked like a vision with her hair swept up in a simple bum, displaying her enviable skin.

Kidman, meanwhile, introduced Angelina Jolie, and called Jolie’s acting talent "very modern gifts." Her nominated role in "Changeling" was simply "unforgettable," she said.

After all the memorable introductions, the nominees were simply jumping off their seats, before the best actress was named. It was no other than the well-deserving Winslet, whose been on our radar since "Titanic." Watch the presenters’ introductions and Winslet’s touching speech below:

Halle Berry was the first black woman to win the Best Actress award.  hattie McDaniel won Best Supporting Actress for her work as Mammy in Gone With The Wind.

Kate Winslet is such a wonderful actress, but then it seems the British actresses are of such quality and are so above mere "celebrity" that they stand out above the crowd. Meryl Streep is of that same ilk. Excellent actress, no pretension, an ‘anti-celebrity’.

What is up?  Melissa Leo was nominated for Frozen River, not Doubt.

I love that bit where Winslet said "Dad, whistle or something" and he did, from up in the nosebleed seats.  That was sweet and unpretentious.  Winslet’s acting in The Reader was incredible and so deserved an Oscar.  But so many performances were Oscar-worthy, sometimes I just wish all the nominees could receive them.

I thought the presentation of the actor awards by the former "winners" was a wonderfully delightful addition to the program.   It was a gentle "rite of passage for the new "winner".  And from their nominee’s faces, one could see that they were splendidly overjoyed with the recognition.  Much better than flashy film clips and loud music.   I watched the awards for the first time in years because my "senses" were not assaulted by the glitz and blitz of former introductions.  Maybe something good came out of "budget cuts".  It was just plain classy.
