Katie Couric Discusses Palin on 'Letterman' (Video)

With the election over and done with, Katie Couric’s now free to dish on her infamous interview with Sarah Palin. And dish she did on last night’s "Late Show With David Letterman."

The journalist tells Letterman how she was first supposed to interview Palin on a Sunday, but the campaign changed the date because "they didn’t want a week to go by without hearing anything from Gov. Palin."

It’s perhaps this rush that caused Palin to come off as ill prepared and, worse, ill informed, especially in terms of Supreme Court decisions and her opinion on Dick Cheney. The most damning part of the exchange came when Palin couldn’t name what newspapers and magazines she read. Of course Letterman had to ask about that, and Couric tried to rationalize Palin’s stumbling response:

It was just really something I was curious about, and I’m not sure whether she was afraid to offend certain people, if she would offend conservatives by saying she read The New York Times … Even in the post-election interviews, Dave, that she’s done, nobody’s really asked her, ‘Why didn’t you answer that question?’ She claims that I said, ‘What do you read up there in Alaska?’ as if people in Alaska don’t read or don’t have access to reading materials. I never said that. I’m aware people in Alaska have access.

Couric wraps up the interview by predicting Palin’s going to be in the limelight for years to come, for better or for worse — it depends on who you ask.

Here’s the video!

To think that a publisher has offered a $7 mil advance for Sarah Palin to write a book. Trust me, if Baracak Obama had an unmarried, pregnant 17 year old daughter, faced questions about his ethics (despite the trumped up ones by “the base,”) refused to respond to a court subpoena, required rape victims to pay for their own rape kits, then I’m certain he would have never been able to ignite the voters about the need for change. What far too many people don’t want to accept about this nation is that we have learned to accept and expect the lowest common denominator to define us. So many of us are so quick to pass judgement, to spew invective without even understanding what it is we’re so angry about. The bottom line is, we were and all stunned by what happened on 9/11. We feel powerless and to add insult to injury, we are quickly losing economic ground and we get caught up in talking about fringe issues. In order to turn our country around, its going to require all of us to pull together and really work together, as Americans, to ensure change that will be healthy for all of us.

Allene—I don’t mean this in a sarcastic way. But what does “pull together and really work together” mean? I work my butt off every day, am exhausted by the time i get home, give a good percent of my salary to charities, and try to be a decent human being. My boyfriend recently got the equivalent of my yearly salary as his bonus (before taxes) and he deserves it; he works 12 hour days, 7 days a week, finding time to see me on the weekends. Really, how much harder can we work? How do we pull together? When my new President says something concrete about his policy in office, I will work to back him and try to ignore my retirement funds dumped into bailouts. I guess that is “pulling together.” Empty phrases get empty responses, and I for one, am so tired from life to evoke one more empty phrase, “love thy neighbor as thyself.” In this season when I can least afford it, I will give more of my paycheck to real charities (always vet your charities, ladies) and try to stop my own empty promises.

I love it when Letterman acts like an ass. Someone has to do it.

Yet another discussion about the loser, yet the winner, Joe Biden is celebrating his birthday today, and wowOwow totally ignored it. Not even a “Happy 66th Birthday Mr. Vice-President-elect”
