Katie Couric's Stock Rises at CBS ... and Beyond

Just last year Katie Couric, fresh in as CBS’s new evening anchor, was fending off rumors that she was about to be fired. Now, she’s on a roll.

Not only are ratings up for her nightly newscast, but this week she’s got two primetime gigs that show off what she does best: interviewing (even though Sarah Palin might not agree!).

Wednesday night, Couric will host her own hour-long Grammy special, "Katie Couric’s All-Access Grammy Special," in which she makes like a pre-Oscars Barbara Walters and sits down for interviews with the award show’s biggest stars. Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lil’ Wayne all took some time for a one-on-one with Couric. Actually, Lil’ Wayne went a step further and joined Couric for a round of bowling. Those superstars are well and good, but we’re sure other journalists are salivating over another high-profile Couric interview subject: Chesley B. Sullenberger, the pilot who safely landed US Airways Flight #1549 in the Hudson River. That interview airs on Sunday night’s "60 Minutes." The Grammy awards show premiers directly after.

As if those projects weren’t enough for Ms. Couric, Princeton University honored “a pioneering woman in an often male-dominated profession” and asked Couric to deliver their annual Class Day address. She’s the first woman to deliver the address since the university started inviting speakers from outside the campus in 2001. We’d say she’s earned it!

Say what you will about Sarah Palin, but she was a proverbial lifeline for Katie. She saved Katie’s career with that memorable interview and the endless lines we will all remember forever like when Katie asked her what newspapers and magazines she read regularly read before she was tapped as V.P. responded “I’ve read all of them…any of them that was in front of me….” ( Isn’t she just a slice of heaven. ) Katie needs to thank Sarah. Katie had the goods and can undoubtedly stand on her own professional accomplishments, but it was Palin that drew added attention her way. Attention that now lends itself to her new found audience and revenue for CBS.
