Katie Couric's Haircut Makes News (But Why?)

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Katie Couric's no 'do appeared Monday's "Evening News"

Should we report on Katie Couric’s new haircut?

That was the question swirling around some newsrooms, including Media Bistro, after Couric appeared Monday on CBS’s "Evening News" sporting a short, pixie Katie Holmes—esque haircut.

The acclaimed journalists at Bistro decided the hairdo story was a definite don’t. They concluded that covering a female anchor’s new ‘do would be sexist, writing, "’Would we report this if Brian or Charlie got a haircut?’ The answer was ‘no’ and ‘no.’" Yet today they pass on word that they’ve received emails from readers wondering why they didn’t mention it, so today, they wrote a post about that and are asking the public if they think that they should have covered it.

The New York Daily News, however, did find a veteran journalist getting a haircut was newsworthy and wrote about how much they disliked Couric’s new look: "The coif, a boyish pixie cut that channeled some of Hillary Clinton’s bad ‘do days, was a striking departure from the signature bob viewers associate with the 51-year-old anchor." They went on to make an interesting analogy here - Couric has said in the past that she has found sexist parallels in her difficult experiences as a high-profile anchor chair at CBS to Hillary Clinton’s quest for the White House.

Jumping on the media bandwagon, here are our thoughts about Couric’s new ‘do: First, Couric looks fabulous — before and after the trim. Second, this would have been more newsworthy if Couric’s beautician was Sarah Palin, who was hammered by Couric in an interview that was believed to have hurt the Republican ticket.

Here’s a shot of Couric’s old bob, for those of you who don’t remember:

Tell us: Was it sexist of the press to report on this?

Like her bob much better…..no it’s not sexist….it’s just hair and people talk about what’s new and departs from the norm….they’d talk if Charlie gell spiked his hair.

The cut is marvelous. In terms of fashion news, I’m not quite sure because Katie is fashionable. But I just don’t get the Palin reference at the end of this piece , especially when questioning sexist coverage.

I think she looks great, but then again how could she not? And I’m with Carmel, if Charlie Gibson or Brian Williams changed their hair dramatically, it would make news. This one doesn’t qualify for a listing of sexist in my opinion.

I beg to differ. This coverage is definitely sexist! When is the last time anyone found a male anchor’s—or politician’s—hairstyle newsworthy? This smacks of the typical belief that the value and measure of a woman lies solely in her physical appearance. I didn’t look to see who this ‘journalist’ was, but I’d bet he thinks Sarah Palin is ‘hot’. As for his assesment of Couric’s hairstyle, and his comment on Hillary Clinton, he is WAY off base! For the record, Couric’s ‘boyish pixie’ is very becoming…Perhaps he thinks that long hair is a woman’s glory, and that a B-52 is the only suitable hairstyle?!

It isn’t sexist at all — if Brian Williams or Charlie Gibson grew their hair out, spiked it, wore a ponytail, or changed its color, people would comment. Had Katie left her hair in that nice classical cut nobody would have said a thing. Tell me you wouldn’t remark on a male or female friend’s dramatic change in hairstyle?

Well perhaps when “poser” David Gregory takes over MTP from Brokaw! after all it’s about the hair! isn’t it?

PLEASE SAY IT ISN’T SO? Are you being facetious or is David Gregory really taking over Meet the Press?

Thanks Agyness, that simplifies my morning news line up quite nicely. Only ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos for me from now on. David Gregory is annoying.

It’s a good cut for her. So is the color.

I like the cut and I’m not sure it’s sexist-we would notice if Anderson Cooper showed up one day with a dye job or if Dr Phil got hair plugs.

Not just women. Men too are often mentioned solely because of their hair. I remember a news story on whatsisname Giuliani when he stopped doing his comb-over; I do recall thinking “About time, doophus.” Donald Trump continually gets mentioned in all sorts of media re his hair (real? comb-over? just plain weird?). Bill Richardson had his hair on the longish side just before and after he came out for Obama, not to mention all that facial hair — which got reported on. Then there are hairdos that are named for men: the Julius Ceasar, for example, and of course the “Jesus” long-haired look of the 60s peaceniks. Remember the Yul Brynner? That was an oddity at the time. How about young black men’s hairdos; see Kanye West’s beautifully swirling trim, for example. Even Obama mentioned his hair on the stump; after a trim, he reported that people were commenting on how much more his grey was showing — that made the news! Pres Clinton’s and current Pres Bush’s greys have as well. Nah, I don’t think reporting on a news reporter changing a hairstyle is sexist. If she had just gotten a trim, then that would be another story.

Rocky 2—Right, Edwards was referred to as “The Breck Girl” and Stephanopoulos as “Mr. Blow-Dry.” Much Ado about Nothing Here….. Has anyone noticed this site is slowing down? Or is it just me? Hit ‘submit’ and it takes forever to post something and it takes forever. But not on other sites…so am wondering if just here. Annoying.

I wrote a post on Chris Matthews last night and it took me quite awhile to write it. I hit ‘submit’ and it totally disappeared never to be seen again.. Wanted to scream and yell and too tired to rewrite it..sigh. I like Katie’s hair and phooey on those men who dislike it. It’s very attractive,
