Bikini-Clad 'American Idol' Hopeful Katrina Darrell Defies the Odds (Video)

Oh, boy. Britney Spears may have some competition on her hands. Well, physically speaking at least.

Season eight of singing competition "American Idol" premiered last night and, as happens, the show conjured some memorable auditions. One, however, stood out from the pack of aural hopefuls: bikini-clad Katrina Darrell. Darrell wore as little as she could — legally — to the "Idol" audition in Phoenix, AZ, and it appears that the 20-year-old model from Chino Hills, CA, is now on her way to Hollywood … But it wasn’t for her vocal talents. Shocker, right?

Darrell sang a mediocre version of "Vision of Love" wearing high heels and a string bikini that really showed off her "attributes." The jaws of judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson dropped — and they voted yes — but new judge, songwriter Kara DioGuardi, offered a very vocal objection when she sang a few chords of her own to show how the song should have been handles. Not one to be upstaged, young Darrell challenged DioGuardi and, yes, the men backed her up and sent the singer off to the next round in Hollywood. Paula Abdul, meanwhile, did little more than stir the pot and squeal. Girl power!

Watch Darrell sing "Vision of Love" below and tell us, what do you think of the judges decision?

Okay, alright, I LOVE American Idol. I love music but I also enjoy seeing young talented people. The bikin clad gal got what she was hoping for and that was “attention” which may have overshadowed her talent a bit. I’m happy for all those who were selected and equally as happy that some were not. Should be a good season and entertaining during this time of facing a depression.

I just can’t get into this show - it just feels like a modern battle in the Colosseum, except it’s personal identity, ego and humility at stake and not life itself - I know very many people who will disagree (obviously since it’s a hot show) but it gives me the creeps

I think I’ll catch it this time around. I like the sound of the changes to format that they’ve promised to make.

I’m not an avid American Idol fan, in fact after it bein on this long, I just about lost interest. I did manage to catch last season though and I think the winner David Cook was the best pick, hands down. I didn’t make it a point to watch this new season but heard about this gal. All I can say is….Way to go hun, you have officially continued the reputation of women with bodies and who sport them like that, in that way, have no real brains or brawn. I think any girl can sing that song the way she did and a true singer can carry it like Mariah. The single reason she was sent to Hollywood was for the “show” effect. I mean come on… we have to have someone for guys to oogle at, girls to hate, and for all to laugh at whe she gets booted down the way. I guess in the end its a good deal for all. The show gets its ratings and Im sure lil’ Ms. Darrell willl end up boostin her “modeling” career. I personally cant wait for the laughs…. after all what are Bimbos good for… doin nothin but makin money off their looks and havin us laugh the whole way through… ya never know she could just be the next Anna Nicole…hahahahahahahaha. Ryan Seacrest… watch out. What am I saying, he didnt even want her kissin him. I would have washed my mouth out with bactine or something, you don’t know where that has been, as easy as it was for her to present herself like that for this type of thing, I wonder what else she gives away for other things.

I saw her appearance on Idol and it made me uncomfortable as a woman and a mom. I heard that she is a professional model. I’m guessing that she has a free pass, the appearance was staged and she will progress on through several stages of the contest. She’s a good looking girl. I hope for her sake that there is a whole lot more to her than the act she put on for the show.

She’ll be finished in Hollywood, she didn’t compare to the ones that had real talent, she’s out of her league. The sad thing is that one less, true talent doesn’t go to Hollywood because their ticket was handed to a body, not a voice.

Once again, young girls and teenagers are shown that its only a woman’s body that sells anything. Girls need better role models than that. In my research for my mysteries, I’ve found some very interesting women historically - ambulance drivers, pilots, explorers. The breed still exists in present day times. I meet a lot of them at Women In The Outdoor (WITO) events where they teach others about camping, nature photography, getting the right hiking gear etc. If you’ve got a daughter 14 and up, take her to one of these and let her meet some real women. http://www.womenintheoutdoors.org/wito/?SUBSITE=wito Suzanne Arruda www.suzannearruda.com http://suzannearruda.blogspot.com/

The video wasn’t available. But I can just imagine. I only watched the first season of AI years ago, then I lost interest. Obviously this girl got what she wanted, to go to Hollywood. The dirty old men could care less about her voice. They saw her body and that was enough for them. If Brittney Spears’ voice can be digitally enhanced, so can this girl’s voice. AI has gotten so lame. The first season, it was entertaining, and there was real talent. After that, it became more of a freak show for attention. It gets worse each season.

I’m not really an “American Idol” fan, I stopped watching after Season 3 and had not watched the first two seasons. I agree with people who say the show seems to be about image and prefabricated/manufactured music, but there are a few people from that show who have done brilliantly in their post-Idol careers, because they didn’t give in to the show’s hype and let their career be handed to them on a silver platter. One such phenomenal performer is Jon Peter Lewis (who I am both a friend and a fan of) who has released two albums to critical acclaim, “Stories From Hollywood” (2006) and “Break The Silence” (2008), in which he co-wrote many of the songs for and co-produced on his own record label. Jon, or JPL as he is better known, could have sold out to the mass-marketing machine, but he took two years from his time on the show to hone his songwriting and vocal craft, live performance skills, and producing skills, and has emerged as a true artist. He is also one of the nicest and friendliest people you could ever hope to meet or talk to online, and has not let his success go to his head. I guess I’m saying this just so people can see that there can be very good things that emerge from a show like this.

I watched only one full season of American Idol, the one with Fantasia … then got the Karaoke game instead when it came out. I like watching the auditions the most and that’s about where it ends if none of them catch my interest.
