Laura Bush and Scribner Reach Memoir Deal

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Laura Bush will have her hands full post-White House.

Scribner Publishing announced today that they’ve sealed the deal to publish the First Lady’s memoir, which will be released sometime next year. The financial details aren’t being released, but some insiders say Mrs. Bush could be pulling in as much as $8 million.

Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Scuhster, said that their editor-in-chief, Nan Graham, will edit the highly anticipated tome. Though she was a librarian at one point in her life, Bush isn’t a writer, so she will be hiring a "collaborator" to help her iron out the details.

Mrs. Bush hasn’t announced a title yet, but did release a statement expressing her excitement: "I am very pleased to be associated with Scribner, the distinguished publishing house of many of my favorite books. I look forward to working with Scribner and the Simon & Schuster team as I tell the stories of the extraordinary events and people I’ve met in my life, particularly during my years in the White House.” Scribner publisher Susan Moldow also released a statement celebrating the deal:

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to publish Mrs. Bush’s memoir. As a rare witness to the private moments of one of our country’s most consequential presidencies, and as a First Lady who has maintained a notable level of discretion, her memoir will provide a candid and personal perspective, and an enduring record, of the years that have already determined the course of the 21st century.

And, we’re sure, will sell well — former First Ladies have tremendous success on the shelves, and people are particularly interested in Mrs. Bush, who’s remained mum on much of her personal life.

I am looking forward to reading Laura’s book. I’ve always admired this lady. I hope she sprinkles it with some of her wonderful humor. When I met her many years ago I loved her warmth and her laughing eyes. I hope her book is a huge success.

Yes good for Laura!! As I said in a post way way back, I hope she takes the curtains, the towels, the silver and anything else her heart desires when she moves out of the Whitehouse, she has more than earned it over the last 8 years….if you know what I mean.

I saw the portraits of George and Laura that were unveiled recently for the Smithsonian’s portrait gallery…..I thought they were wonderful….and I’m really not a huge fan….Laura’s is beautiful…George’s was painted by a college classmate of his and the pose is relaxed and very informal…..makes him look downright forgiveable…..Laura said that in the case of portraits, she felt that it should be “the sooner the better”…(.don’t get a day older!)

I am not sure if I will buy her book but I do wish her the best and hope she has fun writing it. I am not sure that the Bush haters will get what they want out of this book b/c I dont see Laura saying anything negative about her hubby…but I do wish her the best with it.

She might, however, shine some light on the roles of the sycophants around him: Hughs, Rove and the war mongers. This is the kind of book to check out of the library so that the curiosity is satisfied without spending any money. Peace and grace

I had originally said I would love to read her memoir, with the caveat that she would be candid and honest in all aspects. But on the heels of the interviews she has given in the last month, I don’t think it’s in this woman’s DNA to understand what her life has been over the last 8 years. She is delusional about the actions of her husband and she is closer to George W. than anyone in America! If she can’t be honest about his shortcomings (which there are many) as well as laud him for his successes, than any book she would write in my opinion would be a work of fiction.

Ditto, Belinda. I was sorry to hear about your brother’s passing over the holidays. And totally admire your resume prep idea. How’s it going? You could end up being way busy in ‘09.

Thank you so much for your kind words Ms. Dee. It’s still hard, my emotions are still raw. But as usual wOw is serving as a perfect diversion for me today, lots of online debates. :-) My resume project is getting ahead of me. Would you believe I am up to 125 people! No I’m not kidding! I have to be honest though, a majority are super simple to fix up. I should be done with them by this Friday. The problem is my email box keeps filling up with requests. I think I’ll hold off for awhile before I make my post to help official. It seems word of mouth is working far better than I ever imagined it would. In case I haven’t said it to you yet, Happy New Year and I hope 2009 is great for you.

Belinda, I did not know you lost your brother. It is never an easy matter losing a loved one and then having to do the grief work. But, you sure do have a lot of friends to support you here. And, congrats are in order for your resume project. 125 people in such a short time tells me that lots of people have lots of confidence in you… All best.

Thanks Dab-a, I really do appreciate your kind words. You didn’t have to care or even acknowledge that, and yet you did. That says a lot about you. 2009 will be wonderful for all of us, I can feel it! :-)
