Laura Bush Killed a Guy? Real-Life Tragedy Mocked on 'Family Guy' Cartoon (Video)
A terrible skeleton in Laura Bush’s closet was dredged up on a cartoon recently in horribly poor taste.
"Family Guy," a cartoon known to look for cheap laughs with its shock humor aired a repeat that has, as its opening sketch, main family man Peter Griffin dressed as Laura Bush and his wife Lois dressed as a bleeding man with tire tracks across his body. During the scene, the characters repeat the line, "Laura Bush killed a guy." Watch:
What were they referring to?
In 1963, then-17-year-old Laura Bush, nee Laura Welch, ran a stop sign and crashed into another car that was driven by her 17-year-old friend, Michael Douglas. The police report was released in 2000 and reported by the Associated Press. Details of what happened after the crash are conflicting. Some say Douglas was thrown from the car and broke his neck, but the police report made no mention of it. Douglas was pronounced dead on arrival at Midland Memorial Hospital, news reports said. It was believed he may have been Laura’s boyfriend. Laura wasn’t alone in her car either. Her friend, Judy Dykes, also 17, was with her and both girls were taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries, reported the AP. The police report indicates no charges were filed. Laura Bush’s driving speed was illegible on the report, but the speed limit for the road was 55.
According to the First Lady’s press secretary in 2000, "To this day, Mrs. Bush remains unable to talk about it."
"It was a very tragic accident that deeply affected the families and was very painful for all involved, including the community at large,” said spokesman, Andrew Malcolm.
"Family Guy" is known for its poor taste in comedy. Past episodes have linked the John McCain-Sarah Palin party ticket to Nazis, made light of domestic abuse, mocked slavery and played up racial stereotypes. The big question here is why target Laura Bush again now? She’s leaving office in less than one month. The crew already threw their punches. Our theory: The show’s producer, Seth MacFarlane, 36, an obvious Barack Obama fan and Democrat as evidenced by his campaign donations over the last three years, wants to make the Bushes look as ugly as possible before they leave office. That way, any president and First Lady entering the White House will look like saints compared to the two who just left 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
What do you think? Why would "Family Guy" rerun this particular episode at this time?
