Laura Bush Enjoying Post-White House Life, Worried About Afghanistan (Video)

Former First Lady Laura Bush seems to be settling into her post-White House life quite nicely.

While the Bushes are putting the finishing touches on their new home in Dallas, TX, Laura said she’s relishing her newfound privacy. "Life is great, it really is," she told ABC News in an interview. Husband George has even kept his promise to her. "He has brought me coffee every morning … We’re back into our old routine," she said.

The former president has also gotten back into the tech zone. Finally free of the security restrictions of the past eight years on portable gadgets, Mr. Bush is now on the Internet constantly, has a BlackBerry and he’s reading books from the Kindle Dick Cheney gave him for Christmas.

Mrs. Bush now feels so far outside the Washington bubble, that she "totally forgot" to watch President Obama’s address to Congress and the nation Tuesday night. But that doesn’t mean she’s not concerned about certain issues.

While she was First Lady, Mrs. Bush was a strong advocate of women’s rights and girls’ rights to education in Afghanistan, and wants to make sure those issues stay on the Obama administration’s radar. "I’m worried that Americans will wash their hands of Afghanistan, and I think it would be a terrible mistake," she said, adding that she hopes to visit that country again soon. No doubt she will be welcomed by the women there with open arms.

Oh yes, let’s not even mention Pakistan’s nukes shall we lest we wonder why Pakistan is in the fix they’re in in the first place, Mrs. Bush.

Beau, the one liners are meaningless.  Please post your sources so that you can start building credibility.

As soon as I see your sources which are few and far between I’ll post mine. How’s that?  As for Pakistan nukes—read—governments in India and Europe and he Middle East are worried about the Taliban getting hold of them and it’s a distinct possibility especially with  some in the ISI, the Pakistan Ingtelligence Service, in the pocket of the Taliban or very favorable to them.

Now there’s a First Lady!!   A lovely, caring and gracious woman now has her husband around 24 hours a day!  I respect Laura Bush so much.   I hope she will continue her interest in Afghanistan women’s rights.

Wonder who George is contacting in the White House from his Blackberry?  (daily!)

Yes, she does.  She is a true southern conservative lady.   She brought a tremendous amount of class to the White House.

deber…First Lady Laura Bush sets a great example what this role should be…I doubt others will even come close!!!  Fashion is not what I would consider such an important issue for our current one.

I agree with you. Laura looks relaxed. I don’t think the spotlight was a place she relished, but she did her job quite well. I am so glad she gets her coffee delivered every morning - she deserves it.

Laura forgot to watch Obama speech which she called the State of the Union which it wasn’t anyway, oh yeah right!!!  She should have been more concerned with her husbands move to go to war with Iraq than worrying about Afghanistan which now is a little bit too late seeing as we should have been there in the first place anyway and not in Iraq.  Notice she may no comment on Iraq perhaps she hopes it will just go away as it is a big blot on her husbands copy book!!!  Wow, George is reading a book given to him by his good old buddy Cheney….was it called "HOW TO FOOL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND GET AWAY WITH IT"!!!!!

caj p, Why should Laura watch Obama?   She very simply wasn’t interested enough.  She had eight years of politics…and to watch the new president go beserk with a spending package that has very little chance of being successful…why watch it?  If I had been in her shoes I wouldn’t have watched it either.

You would think that being a First Lady for the past 8 years and being so PATRIOTIC she would have wanted to see what the new President was going to do for the country!!!  But there again being a PATRIOT is only when you belong to the Rep Party and of course you wouldn’t watch it you have tunnel vision like most of the Cons on here.
