Laura Ingraham Skewers Sen. Specter Over Stimulus (Audio)

Sen. Arlen Specter has had enough of conservative radio-talk-show-host Laura Ingraham — for now, at least.

Ingraham, the most popular woman on talk radio, on Monday badgered the Republican senator from Pennsylvania over his support for the economic stimulus bill headed for a vote in the Senate today; Specter is one of only three Republicans voting for it, along with Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. "I don’t like to have the federal government spending this money but I think it’s an absolute necessity," he said. Ingraham asked Specter to name a single free-market conservative economist who supports the bill.

Specter’s answer was Harvard Economist Martin Feldstein, but Ingraham shot down that idea, noting that Feldstein has supported the idea of a stimulus but criticizes the current bill as an "economic mistake." Specter tried to laugh that off, but then Ingraham suggested that Specter is supporting the package because he has been "wined and dined at the White House," saying that he gets "treated pretty well when you’re a Republican bucking other Republicans." And that’s what set Specter off.

"Oh, get off it Laura," Specter said. "I’m not drinking any wine at the White House and I don’t dine at the White House. If the president wants to talk to me, I talk to him and I make my own independent judgments, don’t give me this wine and dine baloney, young lady."

We have got to start getting involved in what the government is trying to do. There is some genuinely scary stuff being put in that bill because the mainstream media is not telling us the whole story… check this out ladies: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&refer=columnist_mccaughe… What the hell is this kind of mandatory health legislation doing in a bill that is purported to be about stimulating the economy. This kind of government snooping needs to be out in the open. Debated and discussed, but how can it be if we don’t even know it’s in there? All of a sudden the government has access to our health records because they “must be” electronic AND HOSPITALS THAT DON’T USE GOVERNMENT PROCESSES TO DETERMINE TREATMENT FACE CENSURE AND PUNISHMENT. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ALL ABOUT? And why is it buried in a stimulus bill who’s supposed purpose is to stave off economic catastrophe.

DeBúrca: University of Chicago Medical Center just laid off 450 people. Why? Seems there is plenty of demand in the health industry. Maybe the state should look at its priorities… or maybe they did, and found health care was not as important as say… education. Never fear, Illinois can expect a big chunk of the stimulus package give-away, I’m sure. You guys will be rolling in clover. Your medical center will be up and running overtime.

Because they can’t pay. The state is going bankrupt just like every other state. We are in a Depression. Of course all the doctors kept their jobs. But it was across the board in all other jobs. I hope we get a good chunk of that money. We can use it. As can most states which is why, in spite of all the grand standing being done by the GOP in Congress, the Republican Governors are very much in support for this Stimulus Pkg. and they’re all hoping for help. “University of Chicago Medical Center cutting 450 jobs February 10, 2009 BY DAVID ROEDER Chicago Sun Times The University of Chicago Medical Center said Monday it will lay off 450 employees, about 5 percent of its work force, as the recession hits it everywhere from patient admissions to Medicaid repayments from the state. Dr. James Madara, chief executive of the hospital, said the cuts will come selectively to preserve the hospital’s core missions of patient care, teaching and research. It’s expected that layoffs will most heavily hit support staff. Some workers were terminated Monday and escorted from the property by security. No doctors are being laid off, and executives said staff cuts temporarily will increase emergency room waits. They said they hope the situation will improve as the hospital steers non-emergency patients to local doctors. “This is to me a very sad day,” Madara said. U. of C.’s plan to divert patients from the emergency room has stirred criticism that it is trying to dump poor people elsewhere. Ald. Toni Preckwinkle (4th) said she is monitoring the hospital’s actions to make certain any transfer of poor patients is done “appropriately and compassionately.” She expressed concern that one of two off-site doctors’ offices the hospital plans to close is in her ward, at 1301A E. 47th St. The other office to be shuttered is at 1111 E. 87th St. Their services are to be moved to the medical center’s Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, 5758 S. Maryland. Madara said additional job cuts could occur during the year, mostly through attrition, but those would depend on the hospital’s ongoing fiscal situation.”

f p: …health care not as important as education?? What I said was the state of Illinois has to set its priorities. If the budget is tight, the money has to be allocated prudently. Apparently, they felt the medical center could take a 5% hit. I’m sure they hit other areas as well. The legislature had to agree to the budget, I would imagine.

Frank what I would like to see is the Democrats take out the tax breaks and put back the money to build schools… and reverse every other concession that made for the Republicans that weakens this Stimulus Package. Then I would like them to call the GOP’s bluff and say go ahead, filibuster. But make them actually FILIBUSTER… you know, bring out the cots and keep talking… and then the American people can watch the Republicans play politics while “Rome burns”.

Cynthia: What the hell is this kind of mandatory health legislation doing in a bill that is purported to be about stimulating the economy. One might wonder. Thanks for the bloomberg link, it is an eye opener. We got rid of Daschle, maybe we need to keep cleaning house. From the article: The stimulus bill will affect every part of health care, from medical and nursing education, to how patients are treated and how much hospitals get paid. The bill allocates more funding for this bureaucracy than for the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force combined… This Pelosi/quasi stimulus bill is a piece of cr@p, and needs to be rewritten.

You didn’t get rid of Daschle, Marjorie, he undid himself.

f p: …he undid himself. How noble of him. Wish they were all so easy. However, it would have never happened if someone/everyone hadn’t been pointing a finger at him and screaming, “Conflict of interest !! Crook !! Gutter Politician !!” His own state wouldn’t reelect him, why should he belong in this administration?

Patrice—You might think “that’s the proper relation the government should be funding”, but the Constitution says otherwise. It provides guidelines for what the gov can and can not do—provide for defense is in the Constitution, providing for healthcare is not.

Bingo! Well done Eleanor. The primary job of the President is “Commander in Chief.” No matter how insolvent we shall all be…..it matters not if the nation cannot defend itself.
