Lauryn Louise Last, 16, Allegedly Drowns Her Baby in Toilet, Dumps Remains in Garbage

Lauryn Louise Last, at 16, wasn’t ready for motherhood, but that is no excuse for what she reportedly did to her baby boy.

Last was charged Wednesday with allegedly drowning her newborn in the toilet and then disposing of the remains in the trash. Authorities sorting through a garbage collection site near Tacoma, WA, on Monday, found the baby’s body among 60 tons of refuse. An affidavit filed Monday read Last, "put her baby facedown into a toilet and allowed it to drown for several minutes until it died. Then she threw her son into the trash can outside in a plastic garbage bag."

So, what does the mother have to say? Last’s attorney, Suzanne Hayden, told a reporter from a local news station that her client is young and was never given the tools to know how to handle pregnancy. Last remains behind bars. If convicted of first-degree murder, she faces life in prison.

With this latest news, the most recent statistics on teen birthrates rising is even more alarming. Teen birthrates were up in 26 states for 2006, according to just-released data. The reasons behind these increases remain highly contested. Some blame a more sexually accepting culture. Two popular movies were about unexpected pregnancies — "Juno," which was about a high schooler, and "Knocked Up," which was about the results of a one-night stand. Then, there are well-known real-life teenagers, who became mothers recently, including little Jamie Lynn Spears and Bristol Palin.

Tell us: Is popular culture to blame? Are parents to blame? Are teen mothers not given the proper "tools to know how to handle pregnancy"?

Hi M L, Yes someone would have to have known this girl was pregnant. Granted alot of the pieces to this puzzle are missing, someone knows this girl. I pretty certain all states havs some sort of protection clause, whereas a mother could drop off their child. You know that sad thing also is, that to those of us that would never dream in a million years, of ever doing such a thing as this. I have to wonder if this goes beyond a mental illness of sorts. I truly believe, that we live in a world, where inheirently evil people exist. An evil that is smarter than we give it credit. Meaning there is a rampant narcisism that where people will do anything and everything, to justify a means for doing so.

This is why we need more than abstinence-only sex education in schools.

I can’t stand when ppl blame tv and celebraties about teen prego’s. Being a young mother of twins myself I knew what i was doing and i knew what would happen. My children are 3 years old now two beautiful little girl me and my husband are great parents and we love each other very much. I do agree parents should be more involved with their children my parents hardly ever talked about sex and what not with me or my sister. Teen parents can be just as good as any parent I’m one of them.

Wow, this just breaks my heart….how sad. Another life snuffed out before the little boy even had a chance. What could he have been in life?

No I do not think the school is the sole responsiblity for teaching sex ed. Parents are also the MOST responsible but most I know are not as good at it as trained professionals. You also can lead a horse to water….. The facts should speak for themselves with aids, and other STD’s to deter unprotected sex but the culture bears some responsibility as well. Glorifying single parenthood among celebrites and entertainers does little to send the message that is is not ok. I work with teen girls as a coach and we try our best to educate them that the choices they make live with you the rest of your life. More than once ( fortunately the exception rather than the rule) I have had a young gal come to me afraid that she is PG. and the first thing I ask is have you told your parents? Next I encourage her to go to her school councelor who is trained to deal with this. We have a health center in our school. I am fortunate in that MOST of my girls come from good responsible families and only one out of 10 years with 25+ each year have actually been pregnant. The problem I see is the additude fo the girls that they learn from tv and other woman in the community that glorify sex. . They now take there BC pills to school with them. We actually found some on the cafeteria table and the girl who claimed them seemed not embarrased in the slightest in fact she might as well have posted a sign in the hall that she was available!!! I have had girls tell me they will be late for practice because they had to go get their Depro shot!…. Is that what happens when it is to available? One (17) even quit our program thinking she was pregnant, married the boyfriend (older kids) with her parents permission, and moved away only to come back two months later not pregnant and in the process of a divorce. Since he was now considered her legal guardian she need his permission to re-register for school. The rest of the girls got a real education on that experience. They all should have to spend the night with a colicy baby and find out what parentage is really like and carryine around four sacks and dolls are not anything like it. My heart goes out to the ones that find themselves in that predictiment but am glad for the ones that have a good family to help them along the way! I have seen some good kids make lemonade out of lemons and become great parents, get college educations and succeed. Those are the kids that should be speaking to other kids. Abstinance is like having to be 21 to frink in my opinion…. As I told my son growing up…..I cannot tell you you will never drink. As a adult you can do what you feel is proper..but the point of an age limit with alcohol is the hope that by a certain age you are mature enough to understand the consequences for your actions and do whatever you do responsibly and are prepared to accept them when you do! 14 & 15 year olds do not have a clue!

Tell me something: if parents are the supposedly responsible ones to teach their children about sex, then why have teenage pregnancies gone sky-high in this country?

This tragic story is very similar to one that happened not so long ago, where a young girl gave birth to her baby, then she stabbed him and then the body of the baby was dumped in a swamp. I remember seeing the young girl on Oprah. This is a sad heartbreaking story, and I will reserve judgement until further facts are provided.

Catherine, I missed that one. What did the girl on Oprah say about why she did it?

Elaine, if memory serves me correctly she tried to claim that she thought the baby was stillborn, then Oprah asked her then why the need to stab the baby if it was already dead. She also said she was afraid, not ready to be a mother, and she was afraid of disappointing her own mother, whom she hid the pregnancy from. The father of the baby dumped her when she disclosed to him that she was pregnant. According to the sherriff and a rep from the prosecutors office, there was evidence that she knew her baby wasn’t stillborn, and she murdered him and tried to cover it up.

There is most definitely NOT enough information in the above post to have any idea what or who is to blame (beyond the obvious girl herself that is). The depths of human pathology have long been a mystery to the human race on the whole. The girl could be a sociopath. she could be mentally ill. she could be mentally disabled. She could be dumb. literally dumb… meaning low low IQ. who knows? Blame is pointless. Solutions are good.
