Lesley Stahl: Obama Needs a Big, Sexy Relaunch

Lesley Stahl
These are always the summer-doldrums months in a presidential campaign. Things slow down in the heat and humidity. It’s a time when each of the candidates tries to define the other, as in "Bush-2 on Iraq" vs. "Mr. Tax and Spend." Or "Too old" vs. "Too young." But you wonder who’s listening. So I was thinking: How best could Sen. Obama use this time?

First, as Gail Collins suggests in today’s New York Times, he needs to get some sleep. (See my piece on “60 Minutes” about how deeply critical sleep is to judgement, memory and overall health. And yes, this is a plug, because the story will rerun this coming Sunday.) Then, he needs to think of a way to recapture the energy and emotion of the early months of the campaign. He has to find a way to press the reset button with a big, sexy relaunch.

How and where can he do that? This is exactly why God created conventions!

So, here’s an idea: On the final night of his convention when the delegates vote and the country watches (unlike the previous nights), what if Obama had these three people nominate him, in this order:

One: Hillary
Two: Teddy (if he’s up to it) with Caroline Kennedy at his side
Three: Elizabeth Edwards

Think about it! Wouldn’t that energize the Democrats, and turn the anger of Hillary’s followers (assuming it’s still there) into jelly?

Then, of course, he has to give another speech of his life!

What do you think? And who should McCain get to nominate him?

Dabney,if you google Niccolo Machiavelli, you will get a better picture of the “Tall, slim Prince”. Obama fits the image much better than Bush! It’s all about the glory of the Prince while serving the public interest. That is why so many young people, blind by hope, ride the internet for His Glory. At some point, the Prince will be forced by the most powerful lobbies to go to war,the same way He had to flip flop with “public financing reform”. It’s always the same game, right left, right left just different tools, different times through History. Only power and money rules. So more power to you! LOL

If you care anything about the major issues facing a new president and think what it would mean to have McCain, as he says, appoint Supreme Court justices in the image of Scalia and Alieto, I don’t see how you can consider voting Republican. If you are concerned about the possible influence of lobbyists on Obama, with McCain there is no questiion, you KNOW how close he is to them. GKEE

Not that I spend my time looking for anti-Obama sites, but this gal often has interesting info. She loses me sometimes when she gets into what a Marxist he is—seems kind of retro to me… http://hyper-educated-uppity-woman.blogspot.com/

Salon also has a piece today by Walter Shapiro which seems to be aimed at giving anti-Obaminations heart attacks. How the sheeple will come on over to his side, not to worry. WSJ says he raised money equal to McCain last month…hmmm, not what the leg tinglers tell us. Check out www.salon.com.

Sibell, “vote McCain or stay home”? That seems to be my option, too. I CAN’T STAND IT!! OOPS! I promised myself not to get emotionally involved this time. The last election nearly drove me crazy. I live in a state that voted GWB. I had no one to vent to, so, I ate everything fattening and snapped at people who did not give a sh!t about who was elected to the highest office of our country. I must drink my “calming” tea and live through this. Oh, I read ‘The Prince’ when my boyfriend handed off his books to me from his college summer reading list many years ago. I actually liked ‘Brave New World’ better. “Soma” anyone?

Dabney,if you vote for Mc Cain, there is a better chance to get rid of him sooner, because he is older and not too healthy! Have a cup of chamomille!

Yes, can’t we give Barack (my candidate) a rest too? Same old, same old subjects.

Actually, anybody(other than Bush) would easilly get the American vote! I mean, c’mon…an illeagal space alien would do a better job!!!!LOL I would even welcome a matian with anger issues or “the blob” to be president!!! Bush is the all-time worst presidential joke we’ve ever had (still running..on and on and on).
