It's the Visuals, Stupid

Lesley Stahl

Michelle Obama had two jobs last night: one, to dispel the "elitist" image imposed on the Obamas by the McCain campaign; the other, to deal with the "anger" issue.

That "anger" has to be dealt with is the same as saying race has to be dealt with. I don’t know about you, but I keep hearing that Michelle is "an angry black woman" – which congers up memories of Jesse Jackson, Malcolm X and the old days. Even before he got into politics, Barack Obama realized that projecting a sense of rage would hold him back. It does seem that African Americans who did not grow up in places like the south side of Chicago (where Michelle was raised) are less likely to give off that vibe of wrath. Consider Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice. They never scowl or menace.

Sure, issues matter in the race for president, but the character and personality of the candidates may matter more: Do I trust him? Do I like him?

So: How to deal with the problem? Michelle’s way of dealing with it last night was to keep on smilin’. Deliberately. Smile. Smile. Smile.

Let me digress: The school of political handlers – particularly those masters of the photo op – believe that what we see is far more powerful than what we hear. That’s another way of saying that visual images on television have more impact than words. And there’s some evidence to back this up. Subliminal pictures penetrate our eyes and then somehow descend to that hidden place in our guts where our judgments are formed.

Sure, issues matter in the race for president, but the character and personality of the candidates may matter more: Do I trust him? Do I like him?

So, Michelle kept on smilin’. Barack did too in his cameo appearance via satellite. A toothy grin is like penicillin: It’s supposed to knock out the politically dangerous anger bacterium.

Not only did she smile a lot, Mrs. Obama kept her voice soft and mellow. The quality of voice is also important. I remember thinking, when Ronald Reagan was president: He sounds like cashmere! That soft, toned-down sound was so assuring and inviting.

How the wives come across matters. Cindy McCain will be dealing with her own image problems. She too has to dispel any notion that she’s an elitist (how many houses do they own?). Note that she has flown off to Georgia to highlight the issue of land minds. Watch for the photo ops!

Joan, I agree Michelle did pull off the impossible. I did find there were moments I thought she looked like Sally Fields in Norma Rea. The odd sniff I found a tad insincere but overall a fine performance indeed.

Hi Frank, Yes sadly, the program was to point out differences. To create a perception. The viewers are getting the wrong perception. Nice to hear your thoughts on this.

No Way-No How -No McCain
Leslie, I agree. She needed to impress and image and define herself instead of letting the other side do it. She did it with great looks and an all American message of hard work, family and contribution. She won’t be able to please everyone….that’s for sure.

You can please some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time. But, you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” Abraham Lincoln I think that is one problem that these campaigns have; they are trying to hit all the bases, and it won’t or can’t happen. The handlers and pundits have forgotten this. I have been looking at all of the comments in all of these sections for a long time now, have written a whole bunch myself, and you know what? I honestly wonder if a Franklin Roosevelt, Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, John Kennedy, Harry Truman, or countless other presidents would have a chance in today’s world of double standards and of unrealistic dreams of perfection.

And would’nt it occur to you even remotely, That she was well coached in poise and speech delivery. I mean this isn’t rocket science. Michelle was a lawyer at one time and am sure she spoke often in court. Anyone can give a good speech if properly coached to do so. And also Lesley, did’nt you say she had two jobs to do last night, dispel elitist attitudes and anger? My two questions are, Do I like them? and do I trust them? Here’s my answer, No I don’t!

Elaine, it’s not rocket science, but it is a gift. If you think “anyone can give a good speech if properly coached”, you are very mistaken. John McCain is an example to the contrary. He has just as many, if not more, people coaching him, and more experience on the floor of the Senate. Michelle Obama’s speech last night was a result of natural ability, her excellent education, her intellect, her experience and training as an attorney, the coaching of her “handlers” and her sincerity. I have a question for you. If you don’t trust them, then what specifically do you think they might do to this country that they’re not telling us? Did you trust George W. Bush?

Buh- Bye
I agree, an orator McCain is not. But I am also tired of the overblown style of Obama. It’s like nails on a blackboard to me now.

Sorry to interrupt this lovely thread with a fact, but Michelle Obama was never a trial lawyer, so she must have gotten her poise somewhere else. Would someone have coached her before she spoke for the first time in front of 15,000 people ? I’m shocked ! Carry on.

One does not need to be a trial lawyer in order to know how to speak to others. Would someone have coached her prior to her speaking engagement. You bet they did! I’m not sure whether you are truly shocked or nieve?

No, I was responding to your comment about it “not being rocket science” tat she was poised because “she was a trial lawyer” and,no, I’m not shocked or naive.. I was being ironic. I hope everyone who speaks at either convention will have some coaching before they go before a national TV audience, just to save us from witnessing an embarrassment. No one can possibly be ready for that.

I am with you EKA… I hope everyone who speaks has had the benefit of some coaching or it will be pretty awful to watch. And then, for the debates, I hope the two candidates are ONLY coached and there is no hanky panky with REMOTE coaching during the event, like a certain president did, whose name I won’t mention!

de burca, i will mention the name of george w. bush, whose electronic box could be seen under his suit. the problem is that nobody coached him on the job, when he so clearly needed help. i wish the supreme court had let al gore win in 2000.

Me too about 2000. This would be a different country today, a different world even.

Elaine, You say that “Anyone can give a good speech if properly coached to do so” I’m afraid I would strongly disagree. We’ve had a man in the White House the last 8 years who can barely sound literate when speaking off the cuff. He’s not a heck of a lot better when he gives a speech written by professional speech writers. He finds some way to screw it up every time. He’s an embarassment to himself and Our nation…………..

I have come to the conclusion, of late, that people should stop telling other people when they should no longer be angry. It’s probably because my grown children have decided that I should ‘let go’ of my anger towards their father. Not that I’m spitting up pea soup, but yeah, I’m still angry. Let it alone. Michelle Obama is strong, educated and no body’s fool. That means she sees the idiocy. Since the Fox coverage as been mentioned, don’t you think she sees that too? And, when you’re intelligent, and strong and, particularly, a female, and have strong opinions, people —-as in man people—get frightened. Also, for my money, the woman doesn’t seem all that angry. But, then, I’m older. I’ve seen real angry. As I said, I’ve been real angry. This woman isn’t angry. She’s just ticked off. It is my opinion that Senator Obama is darned lucky to have her, and we will be darned lucky to have her as a First Lady.
