Let's Balance This Obama Thing Out

Whoopi Goldberg

The race issue took center stage on the presidential campaign trail this week as Sen. Obama came under scrutiny for past controversial comments made by his former pastor. Obama delivered a speech Tuesday in Philadelphia in which he distanced himself from what he described as the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s “most offensive words,” but not from the reverend.

Let’s balance this thing out. I found this interesting piece on the web and found it very thought provoking.

What do you think about all this?

Race will always be an issue in this country, specially when it comes to election time. We have people with racial marks against Obama, and of Hillary, and McCain, he’s black, a woman, and an old man. With all the candidates and I’m a true Democrate, this country does better under the hands of a Democrate. Even though Obama is a Democrate I do have to question is character due to his up bringing, not because he’s a mixed breed, but due to his step father teaching him the Muslim way, which does put a big QUESTION MARK IN MY EYE’S. I’m not judging him for his race, this is a man that was sworn in the Senate in Illinois with a Koran Bible not the Holy Bible, and he does’nt acknowledge the American flag nor does he put his hand over his heart witht he PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, which if you look up allegiance in the dictionary “LOYALTY TO ONES COUNTRY”. So to me if he can’t acknowledge our PLEDGE TO THIS COUNTRY WHAT IS HE GOING TO DO FOR US REALLY. The PASTOR’S REMARKS AREN’T AN ISSUE…………………

The Holy Qur’an. Now there’s an interesting subject to talk about. I’m reading it now. I’ve studied the Holy Bible for years. I fine the Qur’an just as interesting.

I really wish they would just put all this to rest. It is very silly!!! Reverend Wright isn’t the only person talking about race in church. I am sure he doesn’t base his sermons on race, more likely this was said at a time when there was unrest. Reverends are there to uplift their congregation. Many times they will preach on a subject that has been put into the suggestion box.Whoops shouldn’t have let that cat out the bag. I guess what I am trying to say is Reverend Wright’s opinion is just that…his opinion. It doesn’t necessarily reflect what Obama believes. Does anyone here always agree with their pastors????

I am curious and excited about Obama coming on the View today. I am disappointed with Rev. Wright and feel he attempted to sabotage Obama’s future. This was probably done unconciously and he got carried away in his services needing excessive attention. Here is a wonderful man who has attended his church for many years, learning and listening on the values of public speaking and yet Obama has never uttered such demeaning and “ungodly” statements. I personally would remove myself from Rev Wright’s backlash but this will be OBama’s decision. Could Rev Wright been overly zealous and slightly jealous that one of his protogee’s has succeed in having people unite despite differences and color?

Well, if I have an associate and he or she says something that I disagree with, I hope if I am judged, and really no one has the right to judge another, that I do not get blame for what another person’s says. I am always disputing with some of my associates, but I will not disnounce them if I disagree, I will simply say everyone is entitle to their own opinion as long as they know it is only their opinion, but I will say I totally disagree with you. Now, if someone judges me by what this person’s says, then they are not exhibiting objective criticism but subjective criticism, which have not any significant but to their internal self.

Of all the Whoopi Goldbergs I’ve ever known (billions and billions throughout the universe, according to Carl Sagan), you’re still my favorite one! I posted remarks under the thread, “I Read the News Today: Will Obama Prove Them Wrong?” http://www.wowowow.com/post/i-read-news-today-will-obama-prove-them-wron… on page six, pointing readers to videos by Cynthia McKinney on her site http://runcynthiarun.org/ as being historical and revealing (especially the streaming movie, “American Blackout”) from a view inside the political process.

Whoopi - I have always loved you. As an old white woman, lucky enough to have spent most of my life in diverse Manhattan, I think we aren’t addressing the race issue in the right way (as we don’t address the ‘woman’ issue). Maybe as someone who really isn’t racist, I see the problem as one of lack of respect for differences rather that a more narrow concern with how nasty we are to each other for no reason. To me the Rev Wright discloser could have been helpful. I felt it wasn’t useful for Obama to focus on the fact that the anger Wright expresses was a result of racism - true but only an observation - more useful to say that 40 years after MLK’s death, we are still stuck in looking for the reasons for hate rather than underscoring the need to understand then appreciate our differences. Whoopi once said on some show ‘we don’t get wrinkles’ …. and I confirmed that with a dark-skinned friend. How lovely - I’m so white - English Irish and at 61 have been going to the dermatologist for decades it seems, to avoid the skin cancer my dad survived when he was 50. I love to see dark skin on tv now and remark to myself that the person has no wrinkles. How enriching to have that information. Raising a kid in New York was fascinating - my daughter, thin blond hair always sighed at her friend’s stiff corn rows, so I learned how to do them. Anne (her friend) saw the yellow braids and said ‘now that’s why they call them ‘corn rows” and my daughter beamed. It is time, I think, for events like the Wright revelation to spawn a PBS show on Black Power Theology - it would make an interesting education for ex-Episcopalians like me.

READ THIS POST, NOT MY PREVIOUS ONE. what’s the problem with rev wright trying to scare the bejeezuz out of us? i grew up with that stuff. i was so terrified at summer bible camp i called my parents and begged them to give the preacher permission to baptize me in the lake by the preacher. when they said it would be better if i waited till i got home I became even more terrified. i didn’t sleep for 3 nights. when the deed was finally done i was able to get to sleep — for about two nights. then the fear became even worse. i couldn’t sleep because i was panic-stricken worrying i was going to die in my sleep and go to hell because i couldn’t stop masturbating. the preacher never tried to scare us about masturbating (specifically) – our preacher and my father left that to mom. she made me uncomfortable rather than scaring me, but after she had her little talk it kind of spoiled it because every time i touched my penis i’d think about her. that was a bummer. so i became an atheist, but that didn’t’ work. that was a bummer. well, we didn’t use that word in the fifties. the guy on dobie gillis used the word “drag”(i’m so glad we have google, his name was Maynard) but he wasn’t cool, so we couldn’t use that word. We didn’t use the word “sucks” either. I can’t remember what word we used. but i can’t forget my mom every time i masturbate unless i do something really wierd. i watch gay porn. i never think about my mom when i’m having sex with a woman. because lately my life has been so lonely i resist going to sleep because nothing special has happened to me that day. but if i watch gay porn it works every time. regular porn doesn’t work. i walk around all day watching that stuff in my head — nothing special about that. luckily i don’t worry about going to hell for masturbating anymore. that’s because i got religion, but i don’t go to one of those churches that disapproves of masturbation. my church even approves of gays. that’s fine with me, but sometimes I wish the pastor would try to scare the hell out of us; maybe i’d stop watching gay porn — with black guys — because i’m not a gay person (and I’m not racist), but i’m scared i’ll turn gay.

it wasn’t the lake by the preacher — it was the lake by the camp.

Only in America are we free to speak our minds. Being Hispanic I am not discriminating Obama, and maybe he would make an excellent President. I am just not sure about how he will lead our nation. I really don’t know about what is really happening in our world, but I pray to God that whoever wins the presidency, is the right person. I hope that this time the people of America make the right choice. We need a leader who keeps his promises in leadership, economy and all that America stands for. We don’t need empty promises. We need truths.

We think we are beyond racism, sexism, or religious intolerance but it goes on everywhere. What in the world does a minister’s comments have to do with who Mr. Obama is. Heaven forbid I should be judged on what my Bishop or church members say or believe. We go to church to hear and listen to doctrine taught and discussed then we go home and pray and come to our own realization of what it means. Realistically none of the past Presidents really were truly living their religions, except President Carter, Clinton surely was not. Nixon, doubtful. Ford, no. LBJ? Kennedy, yeah right. In fact if you speak with most people they could not even tell you what the doctrines of their chosen church are. Mitt Romney had no chance because of his religion. You want to talk about active hatred today for a group of people. Go to Temple Square in October and April and listen to the hatred spewed there. Mormons are easy to hate and persecute because they keep turning the other cheek. People keep saying Sen Clinton is being persecuted because she is a woman but that is not the case that I see. It is because she is a nasty, mean, dishonest, insincere, arrogant power monger. I have given up on politics in this country and have seriously considered relocating outside the US. My husband served 25 years in the Army and we are very saddened at the lack of honest strong leaders. I do have to say that, Whoopi, I have been listening to you since I heard you do this very moving presentation on Valley Girls years ago, and I think you are one of the smartest women in the public eye. You do not seem to be just conservative or liberal, you take each situation and evaluate it and come up with fair, clear, and right on answers. Thank you and you have my vote.

I have just sat and read every one of these comments and I am torn between being speechless and ready to rant like the rest. Just to make a few personal points about subjects that were brought up. My grandson is in Iraq and I honor him and every person over there - I honor them for putting their lives on the line because their country (our government) has told them they were needed. I TOTALLY disagree with them being there but am proud that my grandson does not question his duty to his country. My take on Whoopi’s reason for putting the website up was so that we could see what hypocrites some people are being by not realizing some of the religious nuts that have had our past president’s ear. John McCain didn’t do himself any favors when he took the stage with John Hagee. John Hagee said that 9-11 was God’s way of telling America to pay attention. In other words - we deserved what we got. If that isn’t anti-American I don’t know what is. As far as things not being about race - please don’t make me laugh. I owned a small business last year and one of my customers broke his neck to run in and tell me that he saw my daughter out with a black man. I told him it better be the same one that was at our house for dinner last night or I would be mad. He, of course, almost choked but left my establishment without saying anything else. I am voting for BO not because he is black but because he is young. Young enough not to have been tainted by the ‘good ole boys’. We have had many black politicians who have fit in too comfortably with the ‘good ole boys’ when given a chance. BO has spirit, spunk, new views to old problems, and seems to be as honest as a politician can be. He seems to know middle America just a little better than the rest. I think they forget that gas costing $4 a gallon is a hardship to many of us because it has been so long since any of them have even filled up a tank. I wish that I could vote for Hillary because I would love to see a woman in the White House but I think she has been around the ‘good ole boys’ so long that she doesn’t even realize that she is leaning that way herself. I do believe she honestly wants to make a difference - I just don’t think she can. O.K.- I have ranted now I will go back to being speechless.

I just noticed that Whoopi did her Home page & was amazed to find that I have more in common with her than anyone else on the planet including having been born a Goldberg..but glad she chose a name such as that for her own. I’m a Nov. baby too & feel like I have found my soul-friend…unbelievable. Whoops if you’re reading this I watch you on “The View” daily & must say you give it the pizazz it needs & your interjections & thoughts are priceless. Too bad I can’t afford those gorgeous needlework slippers…they’re to die for. You’re the best!!!!!!

Ms. Goldberg, Have you heard anything regarding Hilliary Clinton’s former pastor being jailed for child molestation?
By Samuel Williams on 04/24/2008 7:44 pm

I found this to be very interesting in light of Rev. Wright’s impact on Senator Obama. Subject: CLINTON N.Y….IF A PASTOR IS KNOWN BY THE COMPANY THEY KEEP! IF A PASTOR IS KNOWN BY THE COMPANY THEY KEEP! When the Rev. William Procanick put his hand on the Bible during his sex-abuse trial in Oneida County Court earlier this year, he swore to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But as the former Clinton pastor was sentenced Friday to three years in prison for inappropriately touching a 7-year-old girl at his home last March, Judge Michael L. Dwyer said Procanick sacrificed his honesty the day he testified. Okay, so now that Bill and Hillary Clinton’s pastor has been convicted of child molestation, will we see the same furor directed at Hillary that Obama has had to endure these last few weeks? IF A CANDIDATE IS KNOWN BY THE PASTOR THEY KEEP
