Firestorm Reactions to Obama's Pick of Anti-Gay Rev. Rick Warren Role in Inauguration

A firestorm of criticism from liberal and gay-rights activists has followed ever since Obama announced Wednesday that Pastor Dr. Rick Warren will give the invocation at the Inauguration.

Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life and other books, preaches conservative Christian issues at his large Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA. He stresses about climate, poverty and AIDS in third-world countries. But it’s his outspoken opposition toward abortion and gay marriage that has many human-rights activists, lesbian and gay activists finding Warren’s presence at Obama’s inauguration a slap in the face.

Today, Obama is defending his actions saying that disagreeing is what "America is about." SwampPolitics reports Obama saying:

We’re not going to agree on every single issue, but what we have to do is be able to create an atmosphere where we can disagree without being disagreeable, and then focus on those things that we hold in common. So Rick Warren has been invited to speak. Dr. Joseph Lowery who has deeply contrasting views than Rick Warren on a whole host of issues is also speaking during the course of the entire inaugural festivities, there are going to be a wide range of viewpoints that are presented … Because that’s what America is about.

While Obama is saying that we should all hold hands in harmony and live in peace among our "contrasting views" … his selection of Warren is upsetting human-rights groups. The Human Rights Campaign, the largest homosexual rights organization in the U.S., sent a letter to Obama, urging him to reconsider and calling the invitation "a genuine blow." The letter states that Warren was a proponent of Proposition 8. (The proposition, which eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry, passed with 52 percent in November.)

"By inviting Rick Warren to your inauguration, you have tarnished the view that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans have a place at your table," says the letter by Joe Solmonese, president of the group. "We feel a deep level of disrespect when one of the architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination."

"Rick Warren has not sat on the sidelines in the fight for basic equality and fairness. In fact, Rev. Warren spoke out vocally in support of Prop 8 in California saying, “There is no need to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease two percent of our population … This is not a political issue — it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about." Furthermore, he continues to misrepresent marriage equality as silencing his religious views. This was a lie during the battle over Proposition 8, and it’s a lie today."

Kathryn Kolbert, president of the equal-rights group People for the American Way, called giving Warren this honor a "grave disappointment."

"Pastor Warren, while enjoying a reputation as a moderate based on his affable personality and his church’s engagement on issues like AIDS in Africa, has said that the real difference between James Dobson and himself is one of tone rather than substance," Kolbert said in a statement. "He has recently compared marriage by loving and committed same-sex couples to incest and pedophilia. He has repeated the Religious Right’s big lie that supporters of equality for gay Americans are out to silence pastors. He has called Christians who advance a social gospel Marxists. He is adamantly opposed to women having a legal right to choose an abortion.

"I’m sure that Warren’s supporters will portray his selection as an appeal to unity by a president who is committed to reaching across traditional divides. Others may explain it as a response to Warren inviting then-Senator Obama to speak on AIDS and candidate Obama to appear at a forum, both at his church. But the sad truth is that this decision further elevates someone who has in recent weeks actively promoted legalized discrimination and denigrated the lives and relationships of millions of Americans." It sounds as if he choose the Muslim religious beliefs. My husband is also Muslim, yet he is not at all of the radical line of those believers. I am a Christian and we both blend very well because we respect one anothers beliefs and the right to do so. It is just the radical beliefs of any religion that I find deplorable. True Christianity, just simply the word of God is very freeing and unfortunately, far too many people refuse to see that. They seem to think their life is over if they can’t do what ever they want and it’s the things they want to do that are those that bring on so much heartache.

Marilyn…how do you think 9/11 could have been avoided…The terrorists didnt plan 9/11 just b/c Bush was in office. The planning of 9/11 was going on long before Bush took office. I truly hope you dont feel that anyone could have stopped 9/11…I am sure if they could they would have…

They might have TRIED to stop the attack considering they were warned about Al Qaeda, Bin Laden and the plans to use commercial jets as weapons when they were briefed by the Clinton administration as it left. But Cheney didn’t even bother to attend one anti-terrorism meeting before 9/11 and Condi ignored the memos.

It is in the record. Condi was warned. They were all warned of an imminent attack. Clinton specifically warned them that this threat and others were credible. These are the facts. The books were cooked and we know the rest.

Yea, mitzi: And just like that fat slob, Rosie O’Donnell, who belives that steel doesn’t melt. What a dumb ass, has she ever seen how steel is made??????????

Irish, why would you issue a personal insult to O’Donnell? I’m not a fan of her’s (I still have a tape of her telling me off on a long-distance phone message from her) but I fail to understand why this is inserted here. I have jumped in here late, I realize, but please know that every pilot immediately questioned the “melting” issue, because we know the temperature at which jet fuel burns. The tensile strength of iron girders and knowing what can destroy them was a major factor in bringing out the truth - everyone does not want the truth, and that’s fine. Just don’t go where you don’t know you are going, but read the 911 Commission Report. I have nothing more to add…

Then why wasn’t Clinton going after Bin Laden? especially after he bombed the USS Cole? Why didnt Clinton go get him then when HE knew exactly where he was? Oh wait, even if he would of gotten Bin Laden 9/11 still would have happened b/c they were already planning on it and getting Bin Laden would not stop and it wont stop any future attacks. Oh but wait I am trying to talk to someone who believes what she hears from experts that she doesnt know YET won’t believe people who have seen things for themselves b/c she doenst know them…… Keep preaching DeB, keep preaching… Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Ok so once again that shows Clinton had no back bone…he should have stepped up as President and said Too Bad So Sad were going after him anyway but he was too busy with other things to worry about Bin Laden. And Yes I am referring to his blow jobs….I think its pretty sad that once again Clinton can let Bin Laden go YET Bush was to get him right away…But again its what you want to believe and who you want to believe b/c you only believe what experts tell you…YET if you had a Military man tell you to your face he saw something you wouldnt believe him b/c he is no expert or someone you dont know. Again those were your words on another post between the two of us….You believe experts but not people you dont know….

It shows that the Republicans in Congress stopped Clinton from pursuing Bin Laden when he wanted to. And what you are forgetting is that Clinton was following the rules… he didn’t act like a dictator like this president.
