Firestorm Reactions to Obama's Pick of Anti-Gay Rev. Rick Warren Role in Inauguration

A firestorm of criticism from liberal and gay-rights activists has followed ever since Obama announced Wednesday that Pastor Dr. Rick Warren will give the invocation at the Inauguration.

Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life and other books, preaches conservative Christian issues at his large Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA. He stresses about climate, poverty and AIDS in third-world countries. But it’s his outspoken opposition toward abortion and gay marriage that has many human-rights activists, lesbian and gay activists finding Warren’s presence at Obama’s inauguration a slap in the face.

Today, Obama is defending his actions saying that disagreeing is what "America is about." SwampPolitics reports Obama saying:

We’re not going to agree on every single issue, but what we have to do is be able to create an atmosphere where we can disagree without being disagreeable, and then focus on those things that we hold in common. So Rick Warren has been invited to speak. Dr. Joseph Lowery who has deeply contrasting views than Rick Warren on a whole host of issues is also speaking during the course of the entire inaugural festivities, there are going to be a wide range of viewpoints that are presented … Because that’s what America is about.

While Obama is saying that we should all hold hands in harmony and live in peace among our "contrasting views" … his selection of Warren is upsetting human-rights groups. The Human Rights Campaign, the largest homosexual rights organization in the U.S., sent a letter to Obama, urging him to reconsider and calling the invitation "a genuine blow." The letter states that Warren was a proponent of Proposition 8. (The proposition, which eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry, passed with 52 percent in November.)

"By inviting Rick Warren to your inauguration, you have tarnished the view that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans have a place at your table," says the letter by Joe Solmonese, president of the group. "We feel a deep level of disrespect when one of the architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination."

"Rick Warren has not sat on the sidelines in the fight for basic equality and fairness. In fact, Rev. Warren spoke out vocally in support of Prop 8 in California saying, “There is no need to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease two percent of our population … This is not a political issue — it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about." Furthermore, he continues to misrepresent marriage equality as silencing his religious views. This was a lie during the battle over Proposition 8, and it’s a lie today."

Kathryn Kolbert, president of the equal-rights group People for the American Way, called giving Warren this honor a "grave disappointment."

"Pastor Warren, while enjoying a reputation as a moderate based on his affable personality and his church’s engagement on issues like AIDS in Africa, has said that the real difference between James Dobson and himself is one of tone rather than substance," Kolbert said in a statement. "He has recently compared marriage by loving and committed same-sex couples to incest and pedophilia. He has repeated the Religious Right’s big lie that supporters of equality for gay Americans are out to silence pastors. He has called Christians who advance a social gospel Marxists. He is adamantly opposed to women having a legal right to choose an abortion.

"I’m sure that Warren’s supporters will portray his selection as an appeal to unity by a president who is committed to reaching across traditional divides. Others may explain it as a response to Warren inviting then-Senator Obama to speak on AIDS and candidate Obama to appear at a forum, both at his church. But the sad truth is that this decision further elevates someone who has in recent weeks actively promoted legalized discrimination and denigrated the lives and relationships of millions of Americans." Melanie, I have been so caught up in the desire and joy I see in Barack’s inclusive choices across the board of those he chooses to surround himself with, the wide and vast range of viewpoints and politcal leanings, I don’t think I stopped to take Gay & Lesbian emotions into consideration. I assumed (wrongly) that they could set this one flaw of his aside (Warren that is). But I didn’t look at it as you did. So I guess I am wrong and apologize if my opinion insulted Gays or Lesbians on this board by my support of Warren. It’s okay to be against homosexuality but if he insults Blacks well….he needs to go! That’s not me. That’s not what I meant but that is exactly how it comes across. Again, you’re right, I’m wrong. Let’s see what happens with this story and how it unfolds.

Belinda, For so long I thought of you as a voice of reason. But now I am glad Melanie has opened your eyes. As for your statement that his selections have been good ones, I pointed out to you that his Education pick has not. This is a man who believes testing and test prep is the answer to raising standards and that is not education. Like you I supported Obama and want to give him the benefit of the doubt. But that shouldn’t mean we should not voice our concerns. He is still a politician and what you call “inclusive” is really a political move and nothing more.

Belinda, I haven’t been a Christian since the age of eleven. But from what I remember, Jesus had twelve disciples at the last supper, only one of whom wasn’t a “friend.” Obama is carrying his inclusion of those who don’t agree with him way too far. As to Jerry Falwell, Falwell believed that the Nazis who exterminated Jews in concentration camps would enter the kingdom of heaven but their Jewish victims wouldn’t. He later apologized for these comments despite that being his true belief—the belief of Evangelical Christians whose only aim is to Christianize the world. Rick Warren is an Evangelical who feels the same. Obama was dumb to accept Warren’s invitation to debate at Saddleback. It was like Daniel in the lion’s den. Obama, having the messianic complex he has, thought he could charm the pants off all the right wingers. Most believe it was Obama’s worst debate performance and I personally believe Obama was terrible. Remember his nonsense about not having the proper pay grade. Obama should have phrased his answer re: abortion in religious terms, i.e., Christiians (including Evangelicals) have about 80%.of abortions. Evangelicals, by themselves, represent 20% of abortions, a substantial amount given their number. And he should have ended his comments by saying that until religious leaders can control their own flocks regarding abortion, he as president, will not allow any religious group to impose their views on others. Rick Warren was on TV a day or two later saying that he could never vote for Obama given his views. Obama thinks that by inviting Warren he can convince Evangelicals that he is the second coming of the Messiah.

Belinda, some would rather see Obama fail and be “correct” about him, than see him succeed and pull us out of a tailspin. The hate and fear and self-righteousness coming off these posts is astounding. Cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face, isn’t it?

Maybe he chose Rick Warren because it wasn’t politically correct to ask The Reverend, his pastor of his previous church. What was his name?

I think he chose Warren for other reasons and if he had wanted another pastor there are more than 2 to choose from in this country.

Here’s an Obama fan who will definitely NOT be watching the invocation…he couldn’t have picked a bigger UNPRINTABLE when there are so many great poets/religous leaders he could have chosen. Very disappointing….there are better and classier ways to be inclusive.

He could have picked a bigger “UNPRINTABLE”, like Pastor John Hagee. You know, it’s a good thing he isn’t Catholic because if he had picked ANY Catholic priest people could have said the same thing about being anti-gay and anti-choice.

Warren is stomach turning gross….gross to look at…gross in is bigoted views. Was a big Obama fan…now just whatever…definitely will not be watching.

Usually Obama supporters don’t call themselves “fans”, usually it is people putting down supporters who call themselves “fans”.

He could have selected Father John McNeil, a gay priest.

Is he a Catholic priest? Because if he is the whole church is against gay marriage.

Yes, and he is gay.
